5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for serious astrologists
If you're looking for a playful and light book about astrology, then this book is NOT for you. This book is quite serious and academic with tons of valuable information. It delves quite deep into the history of astrology and this forms the foundation of this book. It's written and reads like a text book. As an amateur astrologer, I found this book very helpful and I have recommended it to anyone who is rather serious about learning astrology. It's a must-have for anyone wanting to approach their interest in the stars and their horoscopes with any degree of seriousness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Overview in one book
I have learned so much from this book.Very well written and explained. Very comforting philosophical discussion as well on the universe and our place in it. Goes through everything thoroughly and has an outstanding bibliography at the end for further study.Strongly recommended for those wanting a thorough overview & understanding of astrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I've had a copy of COMPLETE ASTROLOGY by Alan Oken since the early 1990s and it just keeps on delivering relevant and useful insights into the astrological field.I haven't yet been able to absorb all the wisdom contained within it, every now and then new passages leap out which I could've sworn were not there before.

Plenty of 'a-ha' moments in this book, including much material that dove-tails into other disciplines such as sacred geometry and occultism in general.

I'd give COMPLETE ASTROLOGY six stars if it was available, and I'm not even a practicing astrologer! What's even better is that you can now purchase the revised and updated 2006 edition - so go for it.

Regards,
Daniel John Hancock

Product Description
Astrology is described in this book as "the science of relationships"--the relationship existing between all living organisms within the universe. Not only the qualities of the ray energies affect these centres of consciousness, but also the quality and energy of the ruling planets and the zodiacal signs. Seen from the exoteric outside, astrology is a vast and most involved and complex subject. From the esoteric inside, while it is still vast, all-inclusive and complex. It is also possible to perceive the thread which unites and the pattern which prevails throughout the whole system. A basic simplicity in the grand design emerges, therefore, which can serve to interpret the whole. The appendix summarises and tabulates many factors of fundamental importance to the study of esoteric astrology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true classic, one of the best astrology books
One of my favorite books !Real astrology is not about wining the lottery or finding a good spouse. It's about the unfoldment of awareness, personally, and cosmically. The symbolism involved in esoteric astrology is incredibly profound and tells the story of creation, of psyche, of the creation, and of the soul's journey. There is a very good reason human beings have studied the stars and cosmos for many thousands of years. The stars and cosmos are our home, and we are bathed 24/7 in various kinds of light and cosmic energies, subtle influences around us and from the beyond. We cannot see the energy most of the time, but it's there. The universe is very complicated, but incredibly profound and awesome. This book contains an incredible amount of wisdom and needs to be absorbed slowly over time. The author states the astrology is the science of relationships ( no, not your spouse or lover ).It's about how various kinds of energy interact in a mathematical and geometric way, to create the whole universe in which we live, to allow consciousness to have a vehicle, from a galaxy, to a star, to a planet, and to a person. On a personal level, that of our soul, there is wisdom to be gained by knowing what influences are pouring into our psyche, and how we can respond to them in such a way as to expand our awareness and make the most of our lives. This book is part of a large series by the same author(s), and I recommend all of them.In particular, A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, and The Light of the Soul. Read this book multiple times, and practice meditation along with the reading. You will be amazed at the insights you gain. I wore my first copy heavily, so now I have 2.If you are not a believer in astrology you will change your views if you understand the content. If you already know and believe in astrology, you will never look at it the same after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go Slowly
When I first looked at this book, I found I didn't understand it at all. It took me a few years to begin to get into it...then it opened up to me and I couldn't put it down. I'm a professional astrologer now and I keep coming back to this Master work and get more out of it every time. This is one you'll have on your bookshelf for many years. My advice is to savor it slowly. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Esoteric Astrology
This book was given to me by an astrologer. He understood the complexities contained therein. I'm in my 5th reading and I still have much to learn since astrology is not my forte. Yet, with each reading I absorb a bit more about the Logos, the Will of God, the hidden Light of God and the Life of Light... Slowly, I experienced self-consciousness as a necessary step in man's evolution. Recognition of the Christ life and nature, as it expresses itself in daily living to the aspirant was seen to happen in my life in the hope that awareness as lived by the initiate will eventually be mine. A book to be read, re-read and lived. A book to pick up often, daily, for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep and Spiritual
An involving journey in the world of "fate",beautifully written and really really deep.It is worthy.Explains a lot about lot.If you have time to go deep and contemplate just buy it.An inspiration for your life essay.Astrology is just a part of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Liz Greene's books is one of the best I've seen. Her coverage is in depth. This is not an air head sun sign book. Greene ties things together giving many fresh insights. This book was recommend by a very competent astrologer. I'm certainly glad I took her advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Astrology of Fate--Greene's magnum opus?
I have read this book through once and then referred back to it many, many times over the years. This book may be Liz's magnum opus.It really does bring together in one book many of Greene's main ideas as far as astrology is concerned. It is very philopsophical however and would not be a book for the beginning student, nor the student wishing to get specific info on certain astrological principles. It is very much a Ninth House book!I found it fascinating reading, though challenging. And I marveled at Liz's depth of knowledge and insight into the human condition. Her analysis of the 12 Zodiacal Signs as they relate to Greco-Roman mythology was really neat. The section on Pluto as an integral indicator of Fate was especially well done. All in all a very fine work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well that certainly explains everything
Until I read this book, I thought I just couldn't receive any more enlightenment on Pluto, until this book. I avoided because of the cover, it was not appealing at first. But one day I was just in so much Plutoian pain that I faced my fears & all of my fears were totally revealed for the first time in my life. It changed everything I did in my life from that time on. I'm glad I finally got over my fears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hail Pluto, those of us who are about to die, salute you
My humorous title for this review is in contrast to my profound respect for Liz Greene and the job she has done with this book about the planet Pluto, the planet of death and transformation.

I always, always recommend this book to my clients who are Plutonic (Scorpio in the personal signs or on the Ascendant, Pluto conjuncting inner planets, important planets in the 8th house, etc.).Their names are legion because I am Plutonic myself and draw them to me.

I believe that the greatest fear of the Plutonic person is that they are alone in the dark.I mean this symbolically and on every imaginable level. If you are so young that you want to tell me this is an outmoded impression of Pluto, I will speak to you after your first couple of Pluto transits and God help you for your naivete.

After reading Greene's book you will understand yourself at an entirely different level and you will be able to contact the MEANING in what it is you are struggling with in your life.

It is extremely difficult to talk about Pluto and its effect in people's lives with any degree of clarity.Greene shows depth, compassion, scope and breadth and, as always, her writing is TOP NOTCH.Greene is my favorite writer in the field and I highly recommend all of her books.

Perhaps her own Scorpio Rising and Pluto in the 9th house are helpful in her endeavor here but I recommend the book without qualification as the premier book on this pesky planet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really great for beginners or for quick reference
Bought this book as a reference for a class and it really helps brings astrology to life... more than simply symbols in a pie shaped wedge floating about in the heavens. It has some great key words for the interactions of planets, signs and houses. The language is easy to understand, but not so simplistic that an intermediate person would feel it was a waste of time.Great job, ladies!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for beginners
When I purchased this book, I was under the impression that it was more in-depth than it actually is. After receiving it, I was disappointed. This is essentially a thin - though very well written - introduction to karmic astrology, written mainly for readers who are unacquainted with the concept of synastry. As an astrological primer, it does not provide an extensive breakdown of synastric aspects between two charts, or mutual planetary positions.

However, what it does provide is very thoughtful and useful insight into the mysteries of karma and reincarnation from a kabbalistic viewpoint.

From that standpoint, a very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walk the Nodal Path.....
When I was first learning Astrology, there were nota great deal of user friendly books out there....Now that I help other people with their Astrological studies, I look for books that both beginners and seasoned Astrologers will benefit from.....This book is perfect for that...

Students want answers that they can relate too....they want toFEEL where this piece of the puzzle fits in their lives....They can take this info and place it their own personal realm......This fits there why? One piece touches another piece, which then touches another...The whole picture starts to make more sense, it comes into focus and all of a sudden, we have an understanding which was not there before.

Use this book to create your own work of art....this book makes reality more comfortable than fiction.....It's all really easy when you can SEE it.....It helps to touch what you're feeling..

5-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a dream!
This is so far the best book I have read on astrology.
It reads like a dream and it flows with love from Ruth's heart, you can feel the love that went into getting this book out.

I got so much from this one book more than I have from many other astrology books that I have read, which seem to come more from the mind, or the intellect rather than the heart.

If you have been wondering why this karma? Or what does this experience mean to you in this life, this book definelty gives a good starting point to understand and balance your karmic purpose to yourself and others around you. It really allow oneself to accept karmic responsibility whatever the dual nature of it maybe in progressing towards resolving them, at least for me it did wonders!

Enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to karmic astrology
I strongly recommend this book if you are interested in karmic astrology with an emphasis on synastry. Something to learn both for the beginner and the more experienced student of karmic astrology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but somewhat lacking.
I purchased this book to take the place of a much loved, dog-eared edition I bought years ago.I thought that this newer, revised and updated version would have a lot more to offer.

Well, it does have more pages, but it hasn't evolved much.

While the over-all descriptions of each sign might be enlightening to someone new to Chinese (lunar) astrology, it is in the specifics for each sign that things break down. The book does divide each sign into the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), but it does not take into account the Western signs. For example, a Virgo pig differs from a Scorpio pig.A Pisces horse differs from a Sagittarius horse. These differences are not noted in the book.

So the result is that you end up with a one-size-fits all generalization of each Chinese astrological sign. This is far from accurate for everyone.

If you are looking for entertainment, or for a general overview of Chinese astrology, this book is a good start. But, despite the size of the book, much of the information is very general and superficial. After reading this book, I'd suggest that you also purchase a book that combines both Western and Chinese astrology. It will give you a broader picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars More in depth
This book is better than the original because it is more in depth so that pretty much sums it up.The first one was great and this is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chinese Astrology at it's best!
This is one of the best Chinese Astrology books I've read out there. It's very detailed, multi-layered, full of insightful stories to give those a glimpse into the personality traits of each of the twelve eastern signs.I was very impressed and highly recommend this one to ad to the collection.I still refer to it for information on new people that come into my life.Fun stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains inconsistency in zodiac
I loved this book. It finally explained to me why I don't fit the typical spaced out pisces type, because I'm balanced by the bull or water buffalo. The traditional zodiac just never felt like enough, even when you added in all the complicated moon rising and planets. This was more complete and balanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Guide to Chinese Astrology
I've read several of Suzanne White's books regarding Chinese astrology, and is an excellent reference on the subject. It combines each of the twelve signs with each of the five elements to give one a deeper understanding of the sixty possible combinations of human nature in this zodiac.Add to this thoroughness the ease of the book's readability (all of White's books are fun to read), and you have a book that is excellent for the beginner and can offer the experienced Chinese astrologer some new insights.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE serious astrology beginner book
A definitely good introductory book for anyone considering a serious study of astrology. It grounds the reader by both validating astrology as a form of universal understanding and providing a comprehensive and simple four element explination. This will make understanding the subsequent elements and points in astrological interpretation much easier. It has a "general to specific" approach which aids in making accurate interpretations. This is not a book for the lightly interested or if you prefer the "magazine column" sort of astrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into the energetic structure of astrology.
Insight into the energetic structure of astorlogy. If you only read five books on astrology, this should be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Energy Approach.....

Just buy the book, you will have no regrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astrology: an Art that is "a tool for promoting self-knowledge"
The book "Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements" by Stephen Arroyo is an interesting viewpoint of astrology that emphasizes an individual's psychological make-up from an astrological perspective.Published in 1975, Mr. Arroyo divided the book into two parts. The first part he entitled "Astrology & Psychology", which contains eight chapters. The second part he entitled "The Four Elements: An Energy Approach to Interpreting Birth Charts", which also contains eight chapters (numbered from nine to sixteen). What differentiates this book from other typical astrology books is that it is not merely a look-up table for trying to interpret a person's birth chart. In the first part, Mr. Arroyo compares the works of various psychologists (such C. G. Jung, Sigmund Freud and O. Hobart Mowrer), physicians (such as Alexander Ruperti), philosophers (such as L. L. White, Hans Stossel, Irving F. Laucks and Pascal), biologists (such as Père Tielhard de Chardin) and writers (such as Goethe) with various astrologers (such as Dane Rudhyar, David Hamblin and Marc E. Jones), mythological experts (such as Joseph Campbell) and people claiming clairvoyant abilities (such as Edgar Cayce). From these (and many others whom I have not named), Mr. Arroyo creates a synthesis to describe a more humanistic and holistic approach to both psychology and astrology, and encourages psychological counselors interested in astrology to utilize tools from astrology to assist in understand their patients. He also lays the foundation for viewing the zodiacal signs with regard to the seasons of the year in which they fall with their corresponding psychological meanings.

In the second part, Mr. Arroyo describes various astrological components, such as the signs of the zodiac (from a more elemental perspective), the planets (from an "energy regulator" perspective) and the houses. He emphasizes that a simple mechanistic approach of chart interpretation often falls short when the impact of the elements themselves are not fully taken into account, as well as not taking into account how particular individuals may make decisions that overcome what might otherwise may be misinterpreted as "difficult" aspects, when they might actually be good. His descriptions of the elements were well thought out, as were his discussions of elemental imbalances. In the final two chapters, he touches briefly on chart comparisons between people and the houses.

Overall, I found "Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements" to be a very interesting read.I rate the book with 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning some basics about astrology. ... Read more

"Thank the cosmos for the bundle of star stuff named Philip Plait, who is the worlds leading consumer advocate for quality science in space and on Earth. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read for Laypeople and Astronomy Buffs
Phil Plait does a pretty concise review of basic astronomical facts that people should know. He points out several cases of common bad science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I love Dr. Plaitt's blog, and I really enjoyed this book. It's easy to understand but contains really good information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly informative and enjoyable book.
This book was like a breath of fresh air - dealing with something very different than any other book out there and in a really fun way too. It cleared many of my "bad" concepts about astronomy. Mr. Plait has a knack of making simple explanations so detailed and interesting at the same time that the reader can't help but go on until the end. Even found myself smiling at some parts. Highly recommended. 5 Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fun and loaded with invaluable information!
Phil Plait is a treasure. He takes the time to address kooky claims and mistaken beliefs held by the majority of the public. Our world would be far better off if more scientists cared enough to try and educate people who have been led astray by those who preach nonsense.

Bad Astronomy is loaded with interesting stuff. From explaining away Moon Hoax looniness to fixing common mental errors about seasons, quantum leaps, light years, tides, UFOs, and so on, this book is fantastic fun and intellectually invaluable.

Beyond his astronomy expertise, Plait is a wonderful example of the sort of positive and constructive science-based skeptic who brings more light to the world. His sincerity and enthusiasm jump out at you from every page.

"It's too easy to simply accept what you are told," writes Plait. "This is extraordinarily dangerous. If you just assume without thinking critically that someone is right, you may be voting for the wrong politician, or accepting a doctrine that has a bad premise, or buying a used car that might kill you. Science is a way of distinguishing good data from bad."

I highly recommend Bad Astronomy for everyone. It's highly readable. Anyone can handle it. Save the world, buy a copy for a high school kid today!

I also loved Plait's book, Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad and Good Astronomy
"The Eagle has landed." Neil Armstrong

"Houston, we have a problem."

"Stop goofing around, Charlie, and get that rock spiked center stage, and let's break for the day. I'm as dry as a nun's gusset."

It's the summer of 2009, and the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 NOT going to the moon, or at least according to Bill Kaysing, author of We Never Went to the Moon, which details the findings of a purported NASA hoax. That's right: the Apollo moon landings were staged in a top-secret sound stage in the Nevada desert, conveniently located near Las Vegas with easy access to air-conditioned casinos, cold beer, and exotic dancers.

I believe there's a little conspiracy theorist living in all of us, or maybe that's just my alien implant talking, but save your money for the slots. Let's take a small sanity check here. It's now well known that the Soviets were well on the way to sending men to the moon in the 1960's. While the missions never got off the ground, the Soviets worked very hard on them, and were watching carefully when NASA broadcast the historic footage. Both governments spent billions of dollars and countless man hours on their lunar projects; national prestige was at stake for two superpowers. Do you really think Pravda would have acknowledged the truth of the moon missions if there was any doubt?

No one is more appalled that millions of people actually agree with Bill Kaysing than Philip Plait, author ofBad Astronomy: Misconceptions and Misuses Revealed, from Astrology to the Moon Landing "Hoax".Philip Plat debunks the "moon hoax" as well other astronomy-related urban legends--such as you can make an egg stand on end only during the vernal equinox.

What manner of data could possibly convince someone that the moon still lies beyond our grasp? The answer is in the photographs themselves. If you look carefully at the images, the hoax believers say, you'll see the lie. What lie? Thousands of photos were taken, and many of them are quite famous. Most consist of the astronauts performing their duties, and are unremarkable, except for the fact that they show space-suited humans on an alien landscape; unremarkable, unless you are looking for a dark conspiracy.

There are five basic concerns raised by the conspiracy theorists. These are: 1. There are no stars in the astronaut photos 2. The astronauts could not have survived the radiation during the trip 3. There is dust under the lunar landing. 4. The high temperature of the moon should have killed the astronauts, and 5. the play of light and shadows in the surface proves that the photos are faked.

Plait systematically dismantles every point made by the hoax believers with clear, understandable explanations. The hoax believers in many cases use simple physics and common sense to prove their point. Initially, their accusations make sense; however, common sense may not apply on the airless surface of the Moon, and the theorists tend to misunderstand basic physics. Upon closer logical inspection, their arguments fall apart. After all, do you really think that after building elaborate sets, and hiring hundreds of technicians and cameramen and spending millions on the hoax and hookers that NASA would forgot to put stars in the pictures? It is indeed 40 years of inspiration and innovation we celebrate when we acknowledge mankind's epic journey to the Moon, a triumph of human engineering and the human spirit...

With its lavish color illustrations, detailed discussions of astrological techniques, and comprehensive chart building tools, Parkers' Astrology is an outstanding book for any serious student of astrology. The husband and wife team of Julia and Derek Parker reissued this edition that offers many new components, such as the recently discovered comet/asteroid Chiron and its eccentric orbit. (For example, when Chiron is in Aries, the typical Arian could experience considerable restlessness.) It also includes new discussions on eclipses, Relocation Astrology, and Horary Astrology (which focuses on where and when a question is asked, rather than a birth chart). The first half offers rich color graphics and compelling narratives about the 12 sun signs, various chart reading techniques, and how astrology influences sexuality, health, business, and family. The second half delves into the nitty-gritty work of astrology and is downscaled to three-color visuals. It includes a hefty 150-page section on "The Planets at Work" and a 75-page section on astrological tables. The 1994 edition was faulted for being too difficult to build a chart from. Hopefully, astrologers will find this revised edition more accessible and consistent. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The astrological cookbook
I don't believe in astrology. It's a silly superstition. It doesn't matter that Isaac Newton was an astrologer, or that Ronald and Nancy Reagan used it to win the Cold War. It's a silly superstition nevertheless (almost as silly as the SDI).

However, if you are interested in all and everything about astrology, this book is as good as any. It's essentially an astrological encyclopaedia, containing all the information a budding astrologist might need. So whatever you do, don't send it to Richard Dawkins!

To start off, "Parker's astrology" contains the inevitable information about sun signs (birth signs). For the nth time, we learn that Arians are enthusiastic and goal-directed, Gemini are fickle, Virgoans are shy and practical, and Pisceans are out there. No news here.

There is also an extensive section on the planets (in astrology, the sun, the moon and Pluto are also planets). What does Venus signify in the first house? What's the meaning of a negative aspect between Mars and Saturn? What if Uranus is close to the ascendant? And what about "the Saturn return" or "the progressed sun"? Almost every conceivable planetary position in the horoscope is covered.

A more technical section shows the reader how to cast a horoscope. An ephemeris, sidereal times and information on houses for northern latitudes are included. In contrast to some of the negative reviewers (who do believe in astrology), I actually managed to cast and interpret a horoscope with the aid of this book. Unsurprisingly, the horoscope confirms that I'm crazy! It also contained the following piece of advice: "At your age, it might be socially disastrous to have an affair with a high school girl". Well, thank you. Otherwise, love signs are only briefly covered, which may disappoint some readers.

Here and there, there are more obscure pieces of information. Did you know that Oxford, Mexico City and Mecklenburg are ruled by Capricorn? Poor Richard. I mean, he's an Oxford don. Potatoes are also ruled by Capricorn, and so is hemp and the coastal region of ex-Yugoslavia! And, naturally, goats. By contrast, Aquarius controls Moscow, Israel, Iran, orchids, lime fruits and aluminium alloys.

Much of astrology these days is very new agey. "Parker's astrology" takes a more traditional approach. No Jungian archetypes, no nebulous intuitions. Planet X in sign Y means Z, period. The authors clearly aren't Pisceans. This "cookbook approach" is rejected by many astrologers, to whom astrology is rather a new agey self-help technique. By contrast, the case studies included in this book are very fatalistic. If you have a lot of negative aspects in your horoscope, it's more or less inevitable that you become a gambler, an addict or very fat. By contrast, positive, successful and balanced people have a lot of positive aspects in their horoscopes. Ironically, the worst critics of "Parker's astrology" might actually be...other astrologers.

This review is based on a Swedish translation of the 1991 edition. However, the 2001 hardcover edition sold by Amazon seems to be essentially the same book, with some new information on Chiron (a dwarf planet or asteroid) and comets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome !!!
This book is amazing !! I'm a beginner in astrology and this book is perfect for me because the way the wisdom that is explained throughout its pages is incredible easy to understand because the authors guides you in a step by step process that in a couple of weeks you begin to understand and read your own birth chart. Julia and Derek WELL DONE !!

2-0 out of 5 stars The superficial "phone book" of astrology
Parkers' Astrology is hard to miss: big & bright, it gives the impression of being the all-in-one "phone book" of astrology that we've all been looking for. And even a casual glance at its contents would seem to confirm this, as it appears to cover every angle of the field imaginable.

But it doesn't. In the least.

The first half of this tome is a little bit of everything about astrology... with the emphasis on "little bit". It covers all the basics, but some of them so fleetingly that you'll find yourself going to the index to see if they ever get mentioned again.

For example, retrogrades get only a tiny little blurb. Out of an oversized 496-page book. The same with the MC. And the list goes on.

It also includes an extremely confusing "do it yourself" guide to creating your own chart. Which is actually pretty irrelevant in light of the many free websites out there that can draw up your birth chart for free... but again, you'd think that a book this big (which is evidently the culmination of years of research & knowledge) would be able to explain such a central aspect of astrology far more pragmatically.

The rest of this first half of the book strikes me, honestly, as filler and speculation. There are a few things worth considering, but they tend to be as confusing as the rest... with lots and lots of big glossy drawings to take up space.

The second half of the book, though, is the real let-down: while it appears (at first) to be an unbelievably all-inclusive listing of every aspect & placing of all the planets, it is in fact a vague overview fit only for beginners. At best.

Let me explain, especially to the many who I suppose do use this book as a main reference: instead of listing even all of the main aspects, it simply breaks them all up into conjunctions, positives and negatives. That's right, even the 496-page übercomprehensive Parkers "authority" doesn't bother to specifically list squares, trines, sextiles or even oppositions.

Or the asteroids, for that matter. Chiron does get its own comparatively small section, but anything "smaller" is just plain ignored.

And on top of this almost shocking vagueness, the authors take it upon themselves to imbue you with their political agenda. Constantly.

One of MANY examples from the book, this is the "description" of Neptune in Capricorn: "Here Neptune is in an earth sign, and so the vital issue of the Earth's resources, of the harm that has been done by their exploitation, is powerfully focused. We hope we can save the planet, but it will be up to the people born in the 1970s and early 1980s to do so - to right the wrong of many earlier, less caring generations".

And they say that same thing again... and again... and again. Throughout the entire book. Which has what, exactly, to do with astrology? I bought this volume to interpret my birth chart and to learn about myself, not to be indoctrinated by people with a political axe to grind.

But it's not really all that surprising. I mean, the authors (very unprofessionally) whine about scientists who don't believe in this stuff... and make themselves appear even less worthy of respect in this process. It's childish.

I hate to knock this book. I really do. It was my essential starting point in this field, but I just kept finding myself more and more disappointed as I went along... first by the not-so-subtle agenda of the authors contaminating every corner of the book, and later by the simple reality that it flat-out ignores huge segments of its own subject material that were apparently considered "unimportant".

Being generous, I'll conclude that this is a beginner's book. And even then, only in the knowledge of its severe (and deliberate) limitations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good buy! Although, some parts of it are hard to follow.
If you are good at math, this would be a good book. I'm not, but I could still follow how to make most of my natal chart information. It is a great reference book, and I use it often to look up certain characteristics. A great book to have!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Astrology Bible
Yes, if one were looking for an astrology book that taught one accurately how to calculate a chart, this one would leave you in the dark. However, if one is just using this as a reference to a ready made chart (and there are many internet sites that will do this for you for free. See Astro Dienst) this is a very thorough and informative reference. Before buying any astrology book (of which I own many) I always check to make sure the descriptions are accurate for my own personality before purchasing (you'd be surprised that a few books I've found miss the mark). Parker's offers some interesting insights on interpretation that vary from other sources. For example, in the rising sign readings (hidden somewhat after the general sun sign readings with the interesting illustrations), they touch a little on the descendant's role. It brings a whole new perspective to the way I used to interpret rising signs. In interpretations, Parker is complete to the nth degree. The large charts in the back, also, has saved me gobs of time from having to log onto my computer and look up individual planet placings of friends and family I couldn't remember. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best astrology book on my library.
This book is the best one in my astrology library! Among other good things on it, I have never read anything really elucidating about the Saros Series eclipses until I got it. I definitely will buy more books from this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential for the serious astrologer
Not for the "what's your sign?" people, but for real astrology students, this is a book you'll really use. Bernadette Brady explains progressions and transits with examples from history and keeps it simple when there's a lot to understand. She is very concise about planets/houses/angles/pointsand her method of making mini-graphs of transits is a simple way of expressing a lot of info. To demonstrate how it all works, she offers you the particulars of Napoleon's chart and asks what would you have said to him if you were his astrologer in 1814 and he asked for advice?

If you are an astrologer, amateur or semi-professional, this little handbook gives lots of information based upon classical interpretation of the Moons Nodes in both signs and houses. A worthwhile addition to any astrological library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic work in the area of Karmic Astrology
I used to own this entire series until a certain nasty hurricane destroyed my astrology collection! This and his book on the Part of Fortune were tomes that I used frequented and are still worth owning even years later. When these were published few astrologers were taking the nodes seriously. Today they are a main staple in many branches of astrology from Synastry to Progressions and Solar returns. Grab this book at these basements prices but you may also want to check out the new node book by Celeste Teal that covers them in the above mentioned areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of karmic astrology

Sextrology develops a far more intuitive and in-depth examination of each sign in regards to sex and sexuality. It distinguishes between males and females of each sign which is a nice change from many other astrology books.Despite the focus on sex, each description helps the reader develop a sense of how the sexual functioning of the sign effects the other aspects of life.

The only thing this guide lacks is a better overview of the planets in each sign.Being as the average reader only knows their Sun sign, this is understandable, but Mars and Venus have a lot more to do with sex in astrology.I was disappointed there was not more information about them here.

As it is, Sextrology is still excellent. It was recommended to me by several very well-versed astrologers.I've jotted in the margins and underlined several passages, and that is the sign of a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun read!!!!
Just a delightful read - and I must say, pretty accurately describes this Taurus woman. Recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, especially for skeptics
A fun book. It's great to show friends, and get a laugh when it is surprisingly correct.I bought it after a friend showed it to me, and blew my mind with how much it hit the nail on the head in the Body & Mind section. ... Read more

    Product Description

This guide brings Chinese astrology back to its ancient roots, providing all the information you need for understanding one of the world's oldest systems of divination.

The ancient Chinese people developed a sophisticated science of astrology that continues to have profound influence in China today. Rooted in the fundamentals of Taoism, it evolved into a system vastly different from Western astrology. Rather than determining personality by the time of the year in which you are born, in Taoist astrology it is the year itself that determines your character. The years form a twelve-year cycle of signs, each named after an animal. Additionally, your personality depends on which of the five traditional Taoist elements you are born under--water, wood, fire, earth, or metal. This makes for a cycle of sixty unique signs. Taoist Astrology includes information for each sign's personality, compatibility, child-parent relations, and rising and falling fortunes during the twelve-year cycle. Discussions of yin and yang, Confucianism and Buddhism, Taoist alchemy, and the connection between Taoist astrology and Western astrology give you all the background you need for understanding one of the oldest systems of divination known to humanity.

Taoist Astrology differs from other books on the subject by grounding its concepts in the ancient traditions from which it originated.

    5-0 out of 5 stars From a Taoist's perspective...
This is the most detailed and accurate source for Taoist astrology. I should know since I'm a practitioner of Taoism. I have been studying Taoism and Taoist astrology for over ten years. Online or offline this is the best resource for learning Taoist astrology. Everything you need to know is in this book. I have just two complaints concerning the dates: 1) There are numerous discrepencies in the starting & ending dates of the years listed in the back of the book. For example - The end date for lunar 2007 (Purple Boar) is listed as 2/6/2008 yet the start date for lunar 2008 (Yellow Rat) is listed as 2/2/2008. That's a five day overlap which is technically impossable. The actual starting date is 2/7/2008, I have the charts to prove it! Hopefully mistakes like these are just type-os. 2) On page 18 Susan Levitt lists solar 1996 as lunar 4694. If you use the traditional Chinese year counting method of counting the reigning years of the eperors, then she is wrong. The actual year is 4693. The reason for the one year discrepency is the reign of the first emperor, who according to LEGEND NOT FACT, took control 8 days prior to the start of the new year. So the modern communist government counts that extra 8 days as one year. I, like many people including historical scolars, believe this story to be nothing more than government propaganda to make everyone think the Chinese calendar is a little older than it really is. The Chinese communist government has been known for pulling stunts like this for decades to make themselves feel superior to the rest of the world. In short, the modern COMMUNIST calendar is wrong and the ancient, traditional Taoist calendar is correct. Which makes this year 2010 (White Tiger) the year 4707 not 4708. Everything else in the book is completely accurate. This is an otherwise excellent book that every student of Taoist/Chinese astrology should have, in fact it should be the only book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative
This book is fun and informative. I particularly enjoyed reading the child descriptions because they provided insights about my grandchildren. In fact, I read the descriptions aloud with my grandchildren, and as a result, we had many fascinating conversations.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most authentic books on the subject I've ever read.
This book provides a fresh perspective on a subject that is all too often simply regurgitated. Ironically, it does this by teaching the original Taoist philosophy on Chinese Astrology.I enjoyed how it gives a brief, but credible history and origin of "Chinese Astrology." Something that is oft overlooked in many other writings. It also recognizes more than just the well-known inter-triad sign compatibilities by making the reader aware of some other fantastic, but little known Yin-Yang parings. This book could easily replace the vast majority (99%) ofother books on the same topic.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese Astrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple to look up your chinese zodiac
this goes further than just "you are a dragon, or tiger etc."but is still really accesible.I have found it to be pretty accurate, which is challenging withour casting an entire horoscope/astrology chart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book For Beginners
I expected a book with "a handbook of authentic chinese tradition" in its title to present a more in-depth and penetrating insight into Taoist Astrology but this book fails to deliver on the promise.

It is very basic. A good place for an absolute beginner but those with prior knowledge might find it a tad too generalized and be disappointed. If you like to spend an afternoon reading the newspaper or magazine horoscope then this is the book for you.

The Pros? It is an easy afternoon read. The writing is clear and lucid.

The Con? I question the accuracy... read for yourself and you will know what I mean.

Overall... an interesting lazy afternoon read. ... Read more

    Product Description
In October 2007, a new phenomenon appeared in the sky, was named the Comet Holmes, and is being claimed and acclaimed by the Hopi Nation as the Blue Star of their prophecy. The Blue Star is the harbinger. Between now and somewhere in 2013-2014, when the Red Star appears, great shifts in human consciousness will continue. With the fulfillment of the Mayan Long Count calendar in 2012 and the appearance of the Red Star, many are predicting that human consciousness will rise to the next level. Although there may be catastrophic events associated with this period, and life as we know it will surely change, if we do the work, this will not be the Apocalypse. In The Astrology of 2012 and Beyond, Garrison explores the changing sky, starting with the movement of Pluto into Capricorn, a region it hasn't inhabited since 1733. It's revolutionary times coming for individuals, governments, and the planet. Garrison draws on traditional astrology and her understanding of the Hopi prophecies and their relationship to the Mayan 2012 predictions, as well as the ending of the 13,000 year masculine kundalini cycle, to offer practical advice and information that will help us evolve through the next four years, including what to expect during the nearly inevitable polar shift. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good Astrological Thinking but inaccurate dates
I enjoyed the conversational style writing and good astrological thinking in this book.Cal does a good job of pointing out various configurations in the heavens that are sure to deliver mass karma to the planet in the near future.

However my major critique and it is why this book gets a 2 and not a 5 is that all of the dates for these configurations are incorrect.
The problem is that she uses tropical configurations and not sidereal.Tropical astrology, most people know by now, is a useful divination system but not actually astrology and it cannot provide accurate predictions. The timing it uses is about 2000 years out of date because its mathematics does not consider the precession of the equinoxes.I urge Cal to republish this book using sidereal maps which accurately depict where the planets are in the sky.

If you are astrologically savvy you may find this book useful for kick starting a thinking process about how these configurations will unleash mass karmas here on earth at this time, then you can find the true dates for those configurations and know what to expect and when to expect it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazingly Clear Formulation
I had learnt astrology some twenty years ago and thought it was a nice tool to play with ideas of how people were made and how they related to each other. However, I also knew how far astrology could go. Which was not far at all. Oh yes, sometimes I could even make intelligent guesses as to what to expect in a particular situation. Sometimes I was spot on, many times, I wasn't. But all the time, I knew that I was on slippery ice when I attempted to predict the future for somebody. The parameters in astrology, viz. the planets, the zodiacal signs and the houses, are too few and represent far too many situations. We don't always have clues as to how to interpret what some configurationscan mean. And, when honest mistakes are made, the outer world of people who don't believe in what you do, are quick to criticize what they deem to be 'mindless pursuits' and 'waste of time'.

Being acutely vulnerable to the kind of criticism mentioned above, and wanting desperately to get somewhere in life, made me set aside totally, all astrological concepts that I knew in my heart to be true in its fundamentals. And it was in deciding to rewrite that chapter in my life, that I chose to buy this book from a long reading list and despite dwindling financial resources,'in order to take a new look at something I had put aside for many years.

Reading this book made me feel that the gamble had paid off, both price-wise and time-wise. Cal Garrison is a great writer, her writing feels like a gurgling stream of clear spring water, with all the punch of a fast read. Her ideas are formulated with great precision and finesse, the prose flows freely, with ebbs and twists as she brings together the puzzle pieces of the planets and asteroids together to interpret the patterns that they and their mutual aspects unleash on an unsuspecting civilization, rooted in fear.

Cal bases her detailed astrological analysis on asteroids and Sabian symbols for each degree of the zodiac. These are elements of astrology that are lesser well known, and therefore, less often used in the standard texts. Using esoteric interpretations attributed to the outer slow moving planets and asteroids, and the Sabian symbols for specific points in the zodiac, she interprets what can happen in windows of time when the planets and asteroids transit them with malefic and/or negative aspects.

Cal is realistic enough not to provide specific dates for the impending disasters that have been prophesied around the magic date. Instead, she provides windows of probability, when the tension generatedby malefic aspects between the planets is expected to be highest, interpreting their positions by their Sabian symbols. Nor does she lose sight of the positive planets and their role in the prophesied end game. She emphasizes throughout, that humanity has an important role in the divine game-plan, and that we can 'cushion the negative effects' of the imminent dangers facing us, even if we can't totally avoid them. Cal's consummate handling of the issue of dating events, is enough reason to buy the book, the clarity is mesmerizing. Reading her clear sighted punch-in-the-back analysis, made me re-experience , howsoever fleetingly, the joys of astrological thought-play that I had engaged in so many years ago.

The most relevant dates that Cal has provided this year are May 28 and July 22 for maximum stress. These may be true. On the other hand, they may not. Does that mean that this book is not worth reading? The watched pot does not boil. The human factor is always present. We are being made to learn, as a species, how to wield our collective power. Miracles can, and have been achieved, as a result of our having done so. I refer to the book called 'Fractal Time' by GreggBraden, who mentions just such a window in 1984 when the possibility of a global catastrophe due to political complications was successfully averted by saner forces. It seems that the powers-that-be want our blundering and confused species to survive, despite our going through some very close calls.

To all those who want to reignite their interest in astrology, I recommend this book. It will take the edge off'your cynicism about the subject. Not only that, it provides clear answers as to the way of our salvation (they do not lie within our professional and public institutions).

    Warmly recommended

1-0 out of 5 stars No Interest whatsoever
While the book's title would lead us to believe it is about world astrology, it puts a big emphasis on the Hopi prophesy, something that was the basis of the beautiful movies Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqatsi. Those prophesies are not dated, making difficult the comparison with Astrological precise way of looking at world affairs.

Not only is it big on the Hopis, but it is also full of "New age stuff", like the fall of Atlantis, Blavatsky's works, UFO, the Age of Aquarius, the HAARP progam..etc with claims that China and USA are engineering weather disasters against each other ( backed byeminently serious references such as "...the alternative press makes this clear..." (cf p 66).

We learn on page 69 that it is "pretty obvious" that far east countries will trigger WWIII...and that a pole shift will happen at around the same time. Good news is: there is nothing in astrological cycles allowing such predictions, nothing... Not even looking at the Square Pluton/Uranus, something which happens every 80 years or so anyway. Granted, there may be unusual sismic activity in 2010-2012, maybe some nuclear accidents 2010-2015 or local wars, but pole shift and WWIII... I would like to read what was indicating WWII in 1939 for a start.

Seeing nothing signifying "the end is nigh" type of thing in the sky, looking at the usual planets used by astrologers, Mrs Garrison makes use of Hekate, Prosperina, Siwa, Pysche and Toro, without any backtesting of their influence throughout history. This is pure speculation, to remain polite. When you read things like "Mother Earth core has shifted and the Christ Consciousness grid is aligned to hold space for the rise of what Drunvalo call the Female Light" (p 82)... you know you are about to enter another dimension...

Although the book had more than 100 pages to go, my interest dimmed seriously after this. On page 181 we "learn" that Pluton Square Uranus is a cataclysmic aspect... granted, the last waxing square that took place in the USA (1877-78) saw a depression, the waning square of 1931-32 as well, but the poles stayed where the were, and the big idea that the square is happening on the Aeries/Capricorn axis is enough to tilt the Earth is totally unsupported. In April 42 (that is close to 2000 years ago) Pluto was zero degree Capricorn, squaring Uranus which was opposing 0° Aeries... and the Poles did not shift much, did they ?

The book is surfing on the 2012 scare mongering wave, it has little to do with Astrological research, and my prediction is : it will soon become outdated and forgotten. By 2012 to be precise...

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Read!
Finally a well written astrological book that explains in an understandable entertaining manner what's up in the stars for the next few years.Buy it!Read it!This may be the most important thing you read this year.

Jyotish, or Indian astrology, is an ancient and complex method of exploring the nature of time and space and its effect upon the individual. Formerly a closed book to the West, the subject has now been clarified and explained by Hart de Fouw and Dr. Robert Svoboda, two experts and long-term practitioners. In Light on Life they have created a complete and thorough handbook that can be appreciated and understood by those with very little knowledge of astrology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I did not expect the book to be THIS good
I read all the raving reviews about this book on Amazon as well as on Vedic Astrology sites, but I have to say that I was still shocked at how great this book was when I got it.It's written well- Concise & honest so it's not boring at all.So have no fear-- all the stellar reviews are genuine. The information in it is so valuable I must say I'm somewhat angry that there isn't a sequel to this book that discusses more advanced topics. If they ever came out with one I'd be first in line to order it.Was also surprised to find that the book seems to be out of print and you can only get it direct from the manufacturer which is why you won't find this book in bookstores. (although if you pay in advance bookstores will contact the manufacturer and order the book for you).WHAT???The absolute best book you can buy on Vedic Astrology out of print?I guess this is what happens when people tend to go more for quirky astrology cook books that don't really do much teaching.I don't know what the future holds, but my advice to anyone would be to get it now & treasure it, lest the manufacturer stops selling it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, late delivery...
The book is great to whoever wants to learn about Vedic Astrology. It took me almost a month, though, to receive it... the book was in perfect conditions, but I believe that due to the period of the year i ordered it, end of the year, It took the mail forever to deliverer the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a excellent read. Personally having Indian roots but having studied western Astrology, I found that this book helped fill so many gaps in my knowledge, which I simple accepted as facts earlier.

If you want to dive into why ? and how ? this book is the best one you can choose. The language is fluid, at times its hard, but makes a very good read. Would recommend it to anyone with a bit of western knowledge who wants to learn the Indian system as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Beginner up to the Expert
-Great book to grow into; many, many layers.
-All things Jyotish under one roof.
-Two GREAT and well respected authors.
    -Solid binding, durable, small, compact.
-Read from cover to cover or skip around for reference.
-Relevant and easy to follow Chart samples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Skeptical, but reverent
I don't believe in astrology. Or rather, I'm skeptically agnostic. However; as someone deeply interested in Indian culture, religion and philosophy, the time had come to get a book on Jyotish. I'm not disappointed in my selection, even if it at times it was like reading a manual on Quantum Physics. I knew I didn't want a bubble gum book, but something that would treat the subject seriously. Unfortunately for me, my eyes started glazing over at times (I have had no considerable background in Western astrology either). I can deal with Vedanta and highly abstract Hindu ideas, but the detail in this book was quite overwhelming in its complexity to sort out for a neophyte like myself. Nevertheless, if you want a reference book to read through and stick on your India shelf for later use, this seems more than just fine. I could of used more visual aids, but I trust their information to be sound and of the utmost integrity to the tradition (and their respective ishta devatas). So for that I have not punished them for my own lack of insight, and given it five stars.

As far as Svoboda goes though, I still prefer his Aghori books! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good SECOND place to start....
For me, as a novice of Vedic Astrology, this one was a bit heavy as a place to start my studies. With that said, Vedic astrology is an amazingly complex system...After reading Beneath a Vedic Sky, this one by Behari was a very helpful, natural next step.He does not write it for the Western mind and leaves out things that, as a Westerner, I didn't know.I have found that Beneath a Vedic Sky and this one have been very complimentary to each other.Beneath A Vedic Sky

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Organised contents
The book is well organised in terms of explaining the Vedic houses/Planets etc.The concept of each house is explained very well and its connection with the other houses. The philosophical explanation is really good but takes time to understand. You have to read carefully few times. I wud say the language is bit more difficult side and the author cud have used simple language. This (language) is the only negative point I find in this book.Otherwise the book is Fantastic for the beginers as it tries to explain the Vedic astrology concepts in a very deep theoratical way. I really liked this book and it gave me a different dimension to my understanding of Vedic Astrology. I wud say that this book is a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reference Guide for Jyotisha Beginners
Like its companion volume, "Planets in Signs and Houses" (2003), this book is a well-organized, portable reference guide to Jyotisha basics. Nicely typeset with clear chapter headings. Assets for the learner include an extensive table of contents, index, glossary, and a variety of handy charts.

Introductory Topics in Part-1 and Part-2 = rashi (signs), bhava (houses), signs (rashi), yogas (combinations), nakshatra (lunar astrology), varga (divisional charts), Kalapurusha (the cosmic man, for medical astrology) and planetary friendships. Part-3 interpretation = more esoteric but still basic enough to guide beginners.

Because this list of topics would be covered in any introductory Jyotisha class, Behari's "Fundamentals" makes a convenient textbook for a first class in Jyotisha or for self-learning. For my beginning classes, I recommend the pair, Vedic Astrology Handbook 1 and Handbook 2. Intermediate students are directed to more comprehensive English texts such as "Light on Life" (1996) and "Three Hundred Important Combinations" (1947, 1983)and others.

The nakshatra descriptions are scaled-down versions from "Myths and Symbols" (1990). These simplified versions = 3-4 paragraphs each, which seems just right for the beginner who is already overwhelmed with the complexity of Jyotisha terminology. Intermediate students can search "Myths and Symbols" for more depth. Behari's drishti patterns seem a bit exotic, esp. for Rahu-Ketu (p 158-160). If the beginner needs more background on planetary aspects (drishti) there is an introductory treatment of Parashari drishti in David Frawley's "The Astrology of the Seers" (1990).

Overall, a right-sized reference guide that is easy to buy and use for a class. Recommended to students and teachers who need an introductory English-language text for ready reference to basic Jyotisha concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fundamental Book
I had interests in Astrology since childhood, but in India I was not able to find the good books. Although I had leared the hard way of creating Birth-Chart (Janam Patri)through Panchang and some knowledge of my Pandit Jee. Resently I had started reading lots of books about Astrology written by Western and Indian Authors. Both has different approches as Western wrtiers makes the book easy to read while Indian writers narrates more about the subject. This book is great for fundamentals. It clears all the aspects of Vedic Astrology. Only thing you need is you have to create serious interests and then you will be able to follow each and every words. If not, then just go though this book, let it sink and then read again and again. Thanks to Bepin Behari to provide this misterious and auspicious knowledge to the world. ... Read more
