Learning to ski
Improve Your Skiing - Read This Book The section on canting and alignment is amazing. On firstreading I was sceptical. However, I have recently been correctly canted andaligned and am amazed at the difference. As an instructor and racer, I worka lot on my skiing technique. Being correctly aligned has shown the biggestsingle improvement in my skiing for years. The techniques discussed inthis book are also very very good. Most of them are now more relevantthanwhen the book was written as they allow you to get the most out of the newgeneration of carving skis. Buy this book, read it, read it again, bealigned and then ski better than ever. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Featuring a new introduction by the author, the paperback edition of Games Colleges Play chronicles the history of intercollegiate athletics from 1910 to 1990 -- from the early, glory days of Knute Rockne and the Gipper to the modern era of big budgets, powerful coaches, and pampered players. John Thelin describes how sports programs -- although seldom accorded official mention with teaching and research in the university mission statement -- have become central to university life. As administrators search for a proper balance between athletics and academics, Thelin observes, this peculiar institution grows increasingly powerful and controversial. Thelin examines the 1929 Carnegie Foundation Report, the formation of major athletic conferences, the national college basketball scandals after World War II, the dissolution of the Pacific Coast Conference in the 1950s, and the Knight Foundation Report of 1991. He finds disturbing patterns of abuse and limited reform and explores the implications of these patterns for today's college presidents, faculty, and students. "Games Colleges Play provides historical background that will inform current policy discussions about the proper place of intercollegiate athletics within the American university. "A welcome book on an important subject. -- "American Historical Review "An important historical analysis of college sport placed in the broader setting of American higher education. Thelin provides a helpful, if dispiriting, perspective for not only thinking about current problems plaguing college sport but also for understanding why college sport has survived and why university leadership and the sports establishment have resisted major reform efforts". -- Academe Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description Despite their influence in our culture, sports inspire dramatically less philosophical consideration than such ostensibly weightier topics as religion, politics, or science. Arguing that athletic playfulness coexists with serious underpinnings, and that both demand more substantive attention, Daniel Dombrowski harnesses the insights of ancient Greek thinkers to illuminate contemporary athletics. Dombrowski contends that the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus shed important light on issues—such as the pursuit of excellence, the concept of play, and the power of accepting physical limitations while also improving one’s body—that remain just as relevant in our sports-obsessed age as they were in ancient Greece. Bringing these concepts to bear on contemporary concerns, Dombrowski considers such questions as whether athletic competition can be a moral substitute for war, whether it necessarily constitutes war by other means, and whether it encourages fascist tendencies or ethical virtue. The first volume to philosophically explore twenty-first-century sport in the context of its ancient predecessor, Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals reveals that their relationship has great and previously untapped potential to inform our understanding of human nature. |
