Product Description
Warren Witherell is a legend in American skiing. Written for skiers from beginners to World Cup racers, "The Athletic Skier" covers the basics of ski and boot design; progresses through teaching and learning skills; reviews new technologies and choices in equipment; and concludes with racing techniques.Amazon.com Review
With diagrams, photos, and extensive instruction from the experts, The Athletic Skier is designed to improve the skills of skiers concerned with equipment, technique, and training details. The authors conclude that the majority of recreational skiers are skiing far below their potential. Their solution? Start with equipment--make sure boots, skis, and poles fit correctly for maximum balance--and then learn to use that equipment as intended to carve turns. Once skiers feel balanced and can use their edges most effectively, they are ready to become "athletic skiers." The final chapters are devoted to advanced technique, conditioning and practice exercises, and instruction for racers and coaches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Athletic Skier
Read this book many years ago and have looked for it since. Nice addition to my ski reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone that aspires to become the best skier they can be.
As a full certified ski instructor with over 14 years teaching experience, and as a former club racer and High School coach, this is the only book I recommend to anyone (and everyone) that seeks to improve their skiing. In this book (and previously in his first book, How the Racer Skis) Witherell does more to define and clarify the skills necessary for achieving and mastering the highest level of skiing than the piles of PSIA books and manuals I accumulated during my five year progression from uncertified to full certified instructor.BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL; Witerell also addresses the most critical, yet most overlooked, aspect of alpine skiing: THE EQUIPMENT.Most specifically BOOT FIT: fore/aft balance, and canting. In so doing Witherell attacks the "disease" that most skiers suffer from, poor fitting equipment (boots) that puts them out of balance and out of alignment and leads them to constantly struggle with compensating movements in a desperate and futile attempt to regain balance and compensate for poor alignment. So much ski instruction and (sadly) coaching only attempts to treat the symptoms (poor "technique": most often caused by compensating movements in attempt to try and correct equipment caused imbalance or alignment problems) and thus miserably fails the student or racer. When a student comes to a lesson for help with their skiing or a racer puts her trust in a coach they deserve to be taught and coached with, and given, the knowledge that is contained in this book.
Simply put for those that have knowledge of NASTAR handicapping, the information contained in this book (and two days skiing with Witherell) took me from an 18 or 19 handicap to a 7 or 8.
This book is even more critical and more cogent today than when it was first published 13 years ago considering today's shaped skis.
Buy this book.Read it.Address boot fit and canting.Read it again.Ski.Constantly play with your equipment, dialing it in.Ski.Play on your skis.Read this book again and again and again.
Skiing isn't as complicated as most instructors make it.Trust me.Trust this book.Warren Witherell and David Evard know what they're talking about.

3-0 out of 5 stars Careful
As a PSIA Ski Instructor I would recommend folks be very careful about some of the canting information in this book. The book assumes that all bowlegged skiers are overcanted and while this is mostly true it is not absolutely true. Many bowlegged skiers (including myself) are naturally undercanted and the advice presented in this book is incorrect for us.This book seems to be the source for the 'if you are bowlegged, cant on the outside of the ski' common wisdom, and again that is simply not true in all cases.Canting solutions are individual and must not be over generalized.Instead, read the descriptions of what effects over or under canting can have and see which fits you. Then cant as necessary.

Also, I would say that this 'used to be' the definitive guide. After reading both this and All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling, I would definately recommend the latter.Ellings book is much more useful for actual practice. There is not much in here that is not better covered in Ellings book. Also, the technical information in Ellings book (on canting for example) is much more accurate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning to ski
What can I say that the book doesn't already say. A great book for beginning to intermediate skiers. Including several sections covering your equipment and proper fitting techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improve Your Skiing - Read This Book
This book was written in 1993 (it is now almost 2000) and you may be tempted to think that this book is outdated. You couldn't be more wrong! Everything in this book is as relevant, if not more so, that when it waswritten.

The section on canting and alignment is amazing. On firstreading I was sceptical. However, I have recently been correctly canted andaligned and am amazed at the difference. As an instructor and racer, I worka lot on my skiing technique. Being correctly aligned has shown the biggestsingle improvement in my skiing for years.

The techniques discussed inthis book are also very very good. Most of them are now more relevantthanwhen the book was written as they allow you to get the most out of the newgeneration of carving skis.

Buy this book, read it, read it again, bealigned and then ski better than ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
Excellent book, very well written and very enjoyable to read, could hardly put down. This book is not just for sports, it has inspirational values for all, kids and adults too and emphasizes that whatever your goal, make it fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice guide for parents
Wayne Bryan does a great job of outlining the principles and the lifestyle required to help kids be champions. No doubt it is a disciplined planned approach, sprinkled with enthusiam and know how.It is clear that raising a champion is very possible. Just not easy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting couple dozen reviews...unbiased?
Seems like the vast majority of these reviews are filled with vague, brief platitudes of how great the book is, and on more than a few occasions the reviewer alludes to a personal connection with one of the authors. The most valuable review was the single one star review offering some honest critique. Nevertheless I have ordered the book on the strength of the premise and a great article about the Bryan twins in the New York Times magazine. Hopefully its worth the read, but meanwhile I'd encourage authors to refrain from spamming their friends to post glowing reviews and instead allow the natural process of amazon reviews to take shape as it was designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A road map for success
No writer is better at understanding the special connections between sports and family than Woody Woodburn, who fits Wayne Bryan's value system. It doesn't matter if your kid is an athlete, artist or an academic, every kid has to learn to balance different aspects just as they will as adults. This book, written by two Dads who paid attention to their kids' dreams, is an artful road map to helping your kids drive themselves to where they want to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising Your Child to be a Champion in Athletics, Arts and Acedemics
A product of their environment. First, a child must have the talent. But how do you cultivate that talent in such a way as to allow the child to develop what is necessary to become a strong, productive member of society as well as cultivating a special talent within the child to help he/she create their own opportunity to excel. I have seen first hand what Wayne and Woody write about. I have watched in awe as two of the most happy and healthy siblings have grown from infancy to young adulthood. I have known Woody's children all their lives and can honestly day that thou are two of the most well-rounded and mature young adults I have come across. Both have excelled in school as merit scholars attending USC. Both have created and continue to manage their own websites that are productive ti our society. Both are cultivating creative talents that will continue to make them productive citizens. Take the formulas brought to light in this book to heart. I do... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for musicians, too...
I'm a drummer and have always had some glitches in my performances when I thought the pressure was on.I've read this book once thru and am already thinking differently on the stage.I've read tons of music books on the subject of letting go of the chatter in your head, but this blows them all away with concrete exercises and evaluations to gauge your mental toughness.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read
if you've decided to open up that can of worms that is sports psych, then you really should read this gem. it is vastly superior to all his other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering the Mental side of sports
This book was given to me a few years ago by one of my coaches. This book is possibly the most helpful book that I have ever read.I am a goalie in ice hockey (15 years old) and have always been regarded as the hardest worker that people have ever seen. But when it came to big games, I clearly wasn't always my sharpest. Many coaches say that sports is 90% mental, but how can you improve your mental skills?Improving mental skills is not very physically demanding, but it does take commitment. Read this book and take this seriously! It could turn around your sports journey, or journey through life.It has for me and it is less than 200 pages!I highly recommend this book for any serious athletes of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars the bible
suggested to me by a world cup winning athlete who owns and old out of print copy covered in tape to hold it together, this book is brilliant. my career as an elite athlete jumped a number of levels whilst reading it. his more recent book is nothing compared to this. go to your library and photocopy it, no one will sell it to you. it is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to mental control for sports!
James Loehr's book deserves 10 stars!

After reading many books on sports psychology and not getting anywhere, Mental Toughness Training for Sports guided me down the road to sporting success.

James Loehr explains what happens mentally to athletes during both great and terrible performances. You are then guided along analysing your own performances and gradually you gain more and more control over your mental and ultimately your physical performances.

This book is for the serious athelete, who has the patience to take the necessary steps required for success.

If you feel you are not producing your best in play due to mental obstacles, then this is the book for. It will change your life and give you control you thought only your opponents possessed. ... Read more

Product Description
Perhaps more than any other two colleges, Harvard and Yale gave form to American intercollegiate athletics--a form that was inspired by the Oxford-Cambridge rivalry overseas, and that was imitated by colleges and universities throughout the United States.Focusing on the influence of these prestigious eastern institutions, this fascinating study traces the origins and development of intercollegiate athletics in America from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Smith begins with an historical overview of intercollegiate athletics and details the evolution of individual sports--crew, baseball, track and field, and especially football. Then, skillfully setting various sports events in their broader social and cultural contexts, Smith goes on to discuss many important issues that are still relevant today: student-faculty competition for institutional athletic control; the impact of the professional coach on big-time athletics; the false concept of amateurism in college athletics; and controversies over eligibility rules. He also reveals how the debates over brutality and ethics created the need for a central organizing body, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which still runs college sports today. Sprinkled throughout with spicy sports anecdotes, from the Thanksgiving Day Princeton-Yale football game that drew record crowds in the 1890s to a meeting with President Theodore Roosevelt on football violence, this lively, in-depth investigation will appeal to serious sports buffs as well as to anyone interested in American social and cultural history. ... Product Description
The "Athletic Musician" is an innovative approach that teaches musicians how to prevent and manage injuries, presented in a unique format that combines sound medical protocol with a musician's point of view. Harrison, a musician, discusses the magnitude of the problem of musicians' injuries with reference to statistical surveys and discusses the emotional and psychological impact of injury on the individual musician. Paull, an orthopedic physiotherapist describes, in layman's terms, the athletic approach to a musician's injuries. Each commonly injured area is examined in turn, from neck, back and shoulder pain to arm, wrist and hand problems. For each area, the anatomy is described, followed by an explanation of what causes the injury and how to avoid or prevent the injury from occurring. Musicians should regard themselves as elite "musical athletes" and protect themselves from injury by following athletic training protocols. The authors present appropriate stretching regimes and postural corrections for both on and off stage, as well as ergonomic changes to instrument and playing positions. The text is amply illustrated with sketches for every exercise and stretch, photographs of musicians demonstrating playing postures, and unique anatomical drawings of musicians. "The Athletic Musician" presents research-based, scientific material in a format that is relevant, clear, and practical for all musicians. The combination of a medical and musical perspectives makes it an indispensable guide for all musicians and the health care professionals who aspire to help them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overall rating: Poor
I was checking out this book and -- since I don't believe Amazon five-star reviews anymore (as often posted by authors/friends/publishers and other shills) -- I googled the net for info on this book in general. Here's one review that I thought is important to read before buying this book based on the hype in Amazon reviews above. It was written by Christine Zaza, a medical professional, and published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal -- a peer-reviewed medical publication (whereas the vague but five-stars Amazon reviews above come from someone "Skye Carman", non-real-name with only one review in his record (this one), and "A Customer" -- excuse me, but I don't believe these two reviews are real).

You can download the CMAJ review from [...](or google on title + Christine Zaza).

The Athletic Musician: a Guide to Playing Without Pain
Barbara Paull, Christine Harrison. 175 pp. Illust. Scarecrow Press, Lanham, Md. 1997.
ISBN 0-8108-3356-5

Overall rating: Poor

Strengths:

- Addresses important subject
- Appropriate for the lay reader
- Warnings for musicians not to play in pain

Weaknesses:
- Information and recommendations reflect authors' opinions and experience rather than an evidence-based approach to injury prevention
- Many inaccurate or misleading statements not supported by research
- Though presented as a book for all musicians, the focus is on shoulder impingement syndrome and string players
- Many common playing-related injuries are either not clearly defined or not even mentioned
- Anatomy for brass players embouchure problems is not presented
- Lack of warnings for the reader (especially the injured reader) to consult a physician, or any health professional other than an orthopedic physiotherapist before engaging in the athletic protocol, which emphasizes neck and back extension stretches.

Audience: Musicians, especially string players with shoulder impingement syndrome

This book was written by a physiotherapist (Paull) and her violinist patient (Harrison), who began teaching injury prevention workshops after their experience with Harrison's shoulder problem. It addresses an important topic, anatomy is described clearly with simple diagrams, and the recommendations not to play in pain are appropriate. Although this book appears to be intended for all musicians, the focus is on one type of shoulder impingement syndrome. Few other playing related injuries are defined or even mentioned, and facial anatomy (applicable to woodwind and brass players) is not covered.

There are several inaccurate statements about musicians' injuries, and much of the research on risk factors for occupational musculoskeletal disorders is either ignored or misinterpreted.

The authors frequently make statements such as "study after study shows" without providing any references. No research support is provided for pronouncements such as "Never do sit-ups in any shape or form." Although the exercise protocol is presented as injury-prevention for musicians, research demonstrating its effectiveness is not evident.

Similarly, in promoting their "ergonomically designed playing chair" the authors offer testimonials and state: "All that remains to be done is to persuade healthy musicians to try this [chair] and learn how to use it as a strong dose of injury-prevention medicine." The authors provide no evaluation of the effectiveness of the chair.

The few research studies that are cited suggest a biased selection rather than a comprehensive literature review. For example, according to the best prevalence studies, playing-related injuries affect approximately 43% of professional musicians; however, the authors cite only studies reporting injury prevalence of 57% to 87%. By ignoring the methodological problems of the few cited studies as well as ignoring more rigorous studies, the authors misrepresent and overstate a problem that is significant even without exaggeration.

Similarly, the authors' warning against taking anti-inflammatory medications is accompanied by statistics on hospitalization and death that were reported at one conference presentation. Their cautions to "sit as seldom as possible" are based on one 1976 study.

The authors advise readers who are injured that this book does not replace their own orthopedic physiotherapist, and readers who experience pain while performing the recommended stretches or exercises are urged to consult an orthopedic physiotherapist. However, there areno cautions for the reader (injured or uninjured) to consult a physician (or any health professional other than an orthopedic physiotherapist) before engaging in the exercise protocol.

The lack of appropriate warnings and the authors' emphasis on back extension stretches are cause for concern. Although Harrison's detailed account of her injury experience illustrates some frustrations other musicians encounter when consulting health professionals, both she and Paull make several unnecessary derogatory comments regarding diagnostic tests and treatments used by health professionals other than orthopedic physiotherapists.

In sum, this book presents the authors' opinions and experience rather than a comprehensive evidence-based approach to injury prevention.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS AND START PLAYING AGAIN.THERE IS HOPE!
After a year of computer/instrument tendonitis, I FINALLY found this book, which really gave a lot of good, CURRENT information.Better yet, I made the pilgrimage to see Dr. Paull in Stouffville, Ontario. It was worth the 10-hour drive. She gave me a lot of important information that contradicted a lot of misinformation given to me by well-intentioned doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, pharmacists, etc. who seem to just perpetuate the status quo of repetitive strain injuries and rehabilitation without really researching new information about them. Read this book, consult Dr. Paull and start playing again.Christine Harrison, the musician who co-wrote the book, had a musician's horror story to tell and she is now playing professionally again after a FIVE YEAR UNNECESSARY hiatus. The book also has excellent information regarding stretches, posture, excercises and anatomy.READ THIS BOOK AND GET THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO START PLAYING AGAIN!I did.I guarantee you can, too, if you follow Dr. Paull and Christine Harrison's advice.Good luck.

P.S.Doing hand strengthing excercises to get better?STOP NOW.You are probably hurting yourself. The only thing you should use to strengthen your hands is your instrument.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible book for every musician
Every musician who wants to avoid a playing injury or is recovering from such an injury should own this book. This is not a read-once book but a book to use and refer to until one has it memorized. It giveseasy-to-follow instructions for safe warming up, exercises and stretches todo at home and even some for doing on stage, ways to avoid injury and meansto stay healthy when one has recovered. The psycological and socialaspects which confront injured musicians are sensitively dealt with in"The Athletic Musician". The title already tells us that this isa relevant approach to treating the subject of musician's health. Read it,it could save your career! ... Read more

The Complete College Recruiting Guidebook for Maximizing Athletic Scholarship and Life Potential

If a student plays football, he knows that face-masking is illegal. If he plays hockey, he knows that he will be penalized for high sticking. And if she plays soccer, she knows she will be red-carded for receiving two yellow cards.

Athletes know the rules of the game. They know that they must play by the rules to be successful.

What a student might not know is that they are simultaneously playing another game: the game of collegiate recruiting. And unlike other games, the rules of the recruiting process are not clear. Unfortunately, too many kids are left behind. Despite their skill level, academic success, motivation, and quality of character, too many qualified athletes are not recruited into college programs, and many more are recruited by the wrong schools.

Why?

They simply do not know the rules of the game.

Athletes Wanted exposes these rules, uncovering:

The NCAA bylaws that allow students to begin the recruiting process earlier than their competitors, even as early as the seventh or eighth grade.

The five critical things an athlete must do and the five critical things an athlete must know to begin the process.

The biggest myths of the recruiting process

The most important questions a student-athlete should ask a college coach.

The process for negotiating the best scholarship package. ... Read more

This is a must read, not only for parents of high school student-athletes dreaming of playing at the next level but for the sudent-athletes themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for student-athletes, families and coaches
Athlete's Wanted is the complete playbook for recruiting. This book starts at the beginning -- Why do college coaches recruit? It provides a 'road map' on to how to get recruited. It discusses the many benefits of using athletics towards a college education.
There seems to be alot of misinformation out there on the subject of recruiting. Some if it is perpetrated from club teams, the high schools, and some coaches. This book simplifies the process and helps the reader understand all the different factors that are involved -- from the college coach's viewpoint as well as a student-athlete's.It lays it out in a logical and easy to understand format.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tremendous Guide
I'm a father of a high school student athlete; baseball and football. Even though my son attends a great school and he's very talented in both sports, the school is not one of the high profile programs and ultimately he may or may not be one of the few D1 recruits. I'd love for him to be able to continue to play, but more than that, I want him to get a great education. Unfortunately, I'm a complete novice when it comes to the recruiting/scholarship process. This book was an easy read, in everyday terms, written by sports professionals who clearly have a grasp on the topic. It was enlightening to say the least. The recommendations were useful and specific. It opened my eyes to how the "game" of recruiting is played and the wealth of opportunities that exist both within and beyond D1. My only gripe is that although the web site [...] is referenced throughout the book as a resource for additional information (info that sounds great I might add), the specific web pages were frequently difficult or impossible to locate. (Sorry; had to subtract a star from my rating for that.) Just the same, I would still recommend the book. It was outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
This is an extremely valuable resource for parents and student-athletes looking for guidance in the complex collegiate recruiting process. Whether you are a top recruit for elite D-I football programs or a good student with excellent athletic skills looking for financial assistance from a quality D-III school, this book offers the blueprint to make it happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Information for Prospective College Student-Athletes
I found this book to be a very easy read with a wealth of information. As a former athlete who went through the process and coach who has tried to "get" my players scholarships - I wish I had this book years ago.If you have a child who wants to be a college student-athlete, if you know a child who wants to be a college student-athlete or if you are a busy high school coach this is a must-read. ... Product Description
This guide to the evaluation of orthopaedic and athletic injuries uses a standard approach throughout (history, inspection, palpation, functional testing, special testing, neurological evaluation) and delineates the differences and similarities between clinical and on-field evaluation. Each chapter starts with a review of the bony areas, clinical anatomy and biomechanics of that part of the body and ends with a discussion of emergency or initial management of specific injuries. All special tests follow the same format throughout to help students visualize the procedures and develop the psychomotor skills of injury evaluation. Most common injuries are accompanied by a table highlighting the common clinical findings and the signs and symptoms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I expected
Delivered faster than I expected and faster than given time expectancy. The book is a little worn, but that was expected. The description of the appearence was on point.

2-0 out of 5 stars Newer addition appears to be slightly better. . .
While this is an excellent book to draw some basics from, there are several typos that are confusing to athletic training students. The chapter about hand and digit injuries is particularly atrocious.Their is a newer version that addresses some of this edition's many many flaws. Starkey may be an expert in the field, but he needed better editors for this book!
As for the BOC exam, get yourself the delineation study to focus on the areas that make up the majority of the exam, purchase and utilize a study guide, and take the time to actually study.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough
The book appears to be well designed and reasonably comprehensive;however, I found it to have major flaws. First: there were numerous 'typos'that contributed to breaking up the continuity of the material. Also, whenreading over material that is new, it is not a comforting feeling that whatyou are reading may easily be a typo. In addition, there were boxed-outspecial tests (I believe pg 264 is an example) that were either incorrector the protocol was matched incorrectly with the test and its purpose. Thisis not good for someone just learning the trade. Second: afterconsideration, the information was not comprehensive enough. Items such asmuscle strength grading, reflex grading, and others did not includepertinent information and a thorough enough grading criteria, etc etc. Itleft valuable information out and this has serious implications whentreating for such things as head injury. For example, after reading theStarkey, one would not know that a particular reflexive state is associatedwith upper motor neuron lesions (I'll skip the particulars for brevity). Ina nutshell, Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment is a MUCH better buy andI have found it to actually be a few dollars cheaper. Of course, theHoppenfeld (the 'Green' book) is also a similar price and should becombined with the Magee book. I would not even have the Starkey text on myshelf and I certainly would not give it to a friend (or even an enemy). Ifathletic training is going to generate more respect for its occupation, then books such as the Starkey must be improved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile study material for NATABOC
This book has one very strong point, its step-by-step guides for each and every physical examination. Each stress test discussed in this text in approached in a way that makes this book unique.Information including:position of athlete, position of examiner, evaluative procedure, positivetest results, and implications are thuroughly explained for ease ofapplication. This book is a worthwhile purchase for individuals in thesports medicine field. ... Read more

Product Description

Featuring a new introduction by the author, the paperback edition of Games Colleges Play chronicles the history of intercollegiate athletics from 1910 to 1990 -- from the early, glory days of Knute Rockne and the Gipper to the modern era of big budgets, powerful coaches, and pampered players. John Thelin describes how sports programs -- although seldom accorded official mention with teaching and research in the university mission statement -- have become central to university life. As administrators search for a proper balance between athletics and academics, Thelin observes, this peculiar institution grows increasingly powerful and controversial.

Thelin examines the 1929 Carnegie Foundation Report, the formation of major athletic conferences, the national college basketball scandals after World War II, the dissolution of the Pacific Coast Conference in the 1950s, and the Knight Foundation Report of 1991. He finds disturbing patterns of abuse and limited reform and explores the implications of these patterns for today's college presidents, faculty, and students.

"Games Colleges Play provides historical background that will inform current policy discussions about the proper place of intercollegiate athletics within the American university.

"A welcome book on an important subject. -- "American Historical Review

"An important historical analysis of college sport placed in the broader setting of American higher education. Thelin provides a helpful, if dispiriting, perspective for not only thinking about current problems plaguing college sport but also for understanding why college sport has survived and why university leadership and the sports establishment have resisted major reform efforts". -- Academe

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on dressage
With all the books on dressage out nowadays, this is one that emphasizes developing the horse with daily exercises that he explains and then shows in lots of photos. The instruction is good and really helpful to a dressage rider.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful but disorganized
The message is all there in this book but finding it is a treasure hunt. There is some excellent advice, excellent exercises, and great information on how to progress. In order to put it together logically, I needed to create my own index and map to the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine dressage book!
At the risk of repeating what everyone says about every book that they like, you must be this book and digest it thoroughly if you are at all serious about dressage.I have nearly every training manual that has been published about dressage, but this book deals more with the theory of gymnastic training of the horse that is so vital if we are to understand why we do all the things that we do.It will also save you many hours of frustration and anguish as you are trying to perfect movements.I would write a proper epistle about more of the merits of this great book (get 'The Ethics and Passions of Dressage', too) but to tell you the truth, I'd just as soon get back to Chapter 10 right now!

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
very disappointing book. The writing is poor, the book is disorganized, and consists primarily of repetitive statements about the author's philosophy on dressage. I wasn't able to read more than half the bookbefore giving up in disgust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical book
of great usefulness for riders of any level and discipline. The author discusses manege patterns that help achieving correct athletic development of your horse and help remedie faults such as crookedness. Too often, riders resort to use of equipment, such as draw reins, to control theirhorse. After reading this book, these people will realize that that iscompletely unneccessary and, moreover, is inhumane and has adverse effects. This book is more to the point than some of the other books by the sameauthor. ... Product Description

Despite their influence in our culture, sports inspire dramatically less philosophical consideration than such ostensibly weightier topics as religion, politics, or science. Arguing that athletic playfulness coexists with serious underpinnings, and that both demand more substantive attention, Daniel Dombrowski harnesses the insights of ancient Greek thinkers to illuminate contemporary athletics.

Dombrowski contends that the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus shed important light on issues—such as the pursuit of excellence, the concept of play, and the power of accepting physical limitations while also improving one’s body—that remain just as relevant in our sports-obsessed age as they were in ancient Greece. Bringing these concepts to bear on contemporary concerns, Dombrowski considers such questions as whether athletic competition can be a moral substitute for war, whether it necessarily constitutes war by other means, and whether it encourages fascist tendencies or ethical virtue. The first volume to philosophically explore twenty-first-century sport in the context of its ancient predecessor, Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals reveals that their relationship has great and previously untapped potential to inform our understanding of human nature.
