Product Description
In recent years there has been a substantial growth in the literature of Auatralian Aboriginal Studies. While much of this has touched on past and present economic issues from a historical, political or social viewpoint, its result has been to emphasise the need for a synthesis of the available information on the economic status of Aborigines in Australia. This book provides a survey of studies so far made on various aspects of current Aboriginal economic life in different environments in Australia, and raises questions of economic policy which follow from their results. In this the authors break new ground in the breadth of their canvass and by their extension of issues previously limited to the realm of social welfare to that of economic policy. This book is prefaced by a brief description of the historical background to the Aboriginal 'economy', and introduced by an overview of the relatively unequal economic status of Aborigines in the Australian economy today. It then surveys the available information on the economic position of Aborigines in the different segments of society in remote and settled Australia in which they live: government settlements and missions; pastoral stations; decentralised communities; urban and rural communities; and the major urban areas. Finally some general economic issues are raised. Aspects of economic status surveyed in the various chapters include demographic and geographic features; health conditions; education facilities; employment; income, expenditure; housing; and the influence of prejudice on economic opportunity. ... Product Description
'Living archaeology,' says Richard Gould, 'is ethnoarchaeology in the active voice'. Using as case studies his own observations of Australian Aborigines, and those of others, the author presents a unified theory of ethnoarchaeology. He demonstrates a reliable way to infer adaptive behavior in prehistoric communities by studying adaptive behavior in a contemporary society and noting the evidence of this behavior in material discards. Gould examines and dismisses the argument by analogy, long accepted as fundamental in earlier archaeological studies of this kind, and, as an alternative, he proposes the argument by anomaly. The book starts by recording a day in the life of a traditional Australian Desert Aborigine camp. the author identifies many social, verbal, and ideational interactions that would be difficult, if not impossible, to infer directly from the typical 'archaeological' remains of this non-material behavior. The book examines differences between actual as opposed to anticipated human behavior and suggests that understanding the reasons for these contrasts is what characterizes ethnoarchaeology at its best. ... It examines the ways in which the Aborigines adapted to and modified their environment, and how their art and culture developed. This revised edition incorporates information on recent archaelogical discoveries. It features a revision of the chapters on Pleistocene rock art and the extinction of the megafauna. ... Read more

Chapters: Florida Museum of Natural History, Dove Cottage, Istanbul Archaeology Museums, Western Australian Museum, Robillard Block, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Museo Dell'opera Del Duomo, Ribe Kunstmuseum. Excerpt:Dove Cottage Dove Cottage is a house on the edge of Grasmere in the Lake District . It is best known as the home of William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy Wordsworth from December 1799 to May 1808, where they spent over eight years of "plain living, but high thinking". During this period, William wrote much of the poetry for which he is remembered today, including his "Ode: Intimations of Immortality ", "Ode to Duty", "My Heart Leaps Up" and "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud ", together with parts of his autobiographical epic, The Prelude . William married his wife Mary in 1802, and she and her sister joined the Wordsworths at Dove Cottage. The family quickly expanded, with the arrival of three children in four years, and the Wordsworths left Dove Cottage in 1808 to seek larger lodgings. The cottage was then occupied by Thomas de Quincey for a number of years, before being let to a succession of tenants. The cottage was acquired by the Wordsworth Trust in 1890 and opened to the public in 1891. The house is a Grade 1 listed building , and remains largely unchanged from Wordsworth's day. It receives approximately 70,000 visitors a year. Before Wordsworth Dove Cottage was built in the early 17th century, beside the main road from Ambleside to the south to Keswick to the north. It was probably purpose-built as a public house , and it is first recorded as the "Dove and Olive", an inn included in a list of public houses in Westmoreland in 1617. It remained a public house, sometimes called the "Dove and Olive Branch", until it closed in 1793. The history of the cottage is ... ... Read more

Product Description
This extraordinary book explores the feelings of non-Aboriginal Australians as they articulate their sense of belonging to the land. Peter Read asks the pivotal questions: What is the meaning of places important to non-Aboriginal Australians from which the Indigenous people have already been dispossessed? How are contemporary Australians thinking through the problem of knowing that their places of attachment are also the places that Aboriginals loved--and lost? And are the sites of all our deep affections to be contested, articulated, shared, foregone or possessed absolutely? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feeling Australian Now
This book axamines the position of non-indigenous Australians who are sensitive to the great injustices done to Aboriginal people by the European "invaders", but who love the land of their birth and want to belong to it in a way which is both meaningful and yet sensitive to Aboriginal culture.

No doubt some of this could also apply to other countries such as New Zealand, USA, Canada, etc.

Read's style is very contemporary, and he uses extensively the thoughts and experiences of a wide variety of today's Australians, both indigenous and non-indigenous.

A very readable and thought provoking book. ... Read more
