Editorial Review

Product Description
"The subject of integrated navigation systems covered in this book is designed for those directly involved with the design, integration, and test and evaluation of navigation systems. It is assumed that the reader has a background in mathematics, including calculus. Integrated navigation systems are the combination of an onboard navigation solution (position, velocity, and attitude) and independent navigation data (aids to navigation) to update or correct navigation solutions. In this book, this combination is accomplished with Kalman filter algorithms.
This presentation is segmented into two parts. In the first part, elements of basic mathematics, kinematics, equations describing navigation systems/sensors and their error models, aids to navigation, and Kalman filtering are developed. Detailed derivations are presented and examples are given to aid in the understanding of these elements of integrated navigation systems. Problems are included to expand the application of the materials presented.
The third edition includes additional background material, exercises and software. The added material includes: development of general form for Earth's gravitational potential with simplification to an ellipsoid model; development of satellite orbital equations for position and velocity and the impact of non-spherical earth gravitation on satellite orbital parameters; and illustrations in the development of derivative free Kalman filters including the Unscented and Divided Difference filter forms.Additional exercises are included that expand and supplement the material in the text and demonstrate properties of the Kalman filter.Additional software is included in this edition for simulating random processes and derivative free filter implementations.
This edition provides a more complete foundation for addressing the different aspects of integrated navigation systems." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall a decent book, but lacking in several areas
This book is probably the best one in the field of inertial navigation, but unfortunately, that isn't saying much. It is probably the most comprehensive of the books I have read, but still lacks full explanation and derivation.Like many other books on the subject, the notation used dates from the 60's and needs to be polished up to modern notation(how about bold face vectors and Matrices for starters).

The most confusing part of this book is that the many of the symbols are recycled and/or are inadequately explained. This means extra effort is required to derive or infer what they actually mean. Many of the key Matrix equations (Fig 5.2) should have a breif explanation below them so that the reader doesn't have to spend 30 minutes going through the text to determine symbol meanings.Additionally, the difference between perturbation and alternative form are inadequately explained, forcing the reader to find IEEE papers for better description.

As mentioned, this book is probably the most comprehensive on the subject and can almost stand alone (emphasis on almost).Someday somebody will publish the ultimate Intertial navigiation text!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
The book is very precise and gives a lot of mathematical related things that's relevant to Navigation and Guidance. I somehow liked it's approach, mainly because it avoids a lot of descriptory jargons and talks straight in mathematics: the language of scientists and engineers! Before reading the book, a good hold of the mathematics related to system theory would be a definite plus. However, the book has an introductory chaper for the relevant mathematics too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very thourough coverage of global navigation, but has at least a few typos
This book packs a LOT of good information into its rather small size, and seems like every time I pick it up I learn something that I didn't know before. Very thorough and in-depth coverage of the subject - though (as another reviewer pointed out) some of it may be somewhat dated by now (LORAN-C, references to USSR, etc.), but it's still a good foundation for global air navigation.

Be aware of at least a couple of typos in the book (there may be more, these are just the ones that I've found so far) for which I had to deduct one star from the rating:

1) On page 124, under "Description of North Atlantic Airspace" - first paragraph line #5: The term "350 north latitude" makes no sense, should probably be "35° north latitude" (?).

2) On page 292, Figure 15-5: The labels for Observer #1 are incorrect, "30° WEST LONGITUDE" should be "60° EAST LONGITUDE" (as the text on page 291 states correctly).

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend !!
Very Satisfied, Fast, Condition of Book was Good - I would use this seller again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for everything else other than the actual navigation
I was disappointed with this book and found its contents to be good with the basics but lacking for its intended purpose of enlightening its readers about "global navigation".

The book dedicated quite a bit of time into the technology and a lengthy discussion of rudimentary skills of dead reckoning and pilotage that every aviator should know by heart. However, a person who seeks to have knowledge of "global navigation" has already reached a level of competence on these particular topics.

So many of my questions were not answered which includes the determination of point of no return or perhaps point of equal time. The importance of these subjects cannot be disregarded. Also, the book hardly dealt with general weather patterns along the North Atlantic route nor did it make mention of navigation around the dangerous mountain ranges of Europe, Asia, and South America. It dedicated a good bit of effort to talk about the organized tracks when crossing the Atlantic but these are routes that are mostly used by airliners. We, the readers, are not transcontinental airline pilots but rather general aviation or perhaps corporate pilots who fly smaller airplanes that need more guidance on "other" preferred routes not just for crossing the Atlantic or Pacific but throughout Europe, Asia, or South America. It gives a good dissertation on filling out an international flight plan form which is fine but it does me no good if I do not know how to best travel from one continent to another. This book, unfortunately, is not able to see much further than domestic flying.

4-0 out of 5 stars What does it take to be a good air navigator?
This book is a very comprehensive picture of what every pilot should know
about navigation. A clear, easy language and thorough explanations of basics and navigation rules makes it easy for everyone, even like me who just begins the flying adventure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine book, but out of date
This is a very well-written, clear, and (so far as I know) comprehensive explanation of what it is intended to describe. The problem is that it seems to be many years out of date. The copyright is last given as 1998, but the content includes anachronisms from even earlier, the most glaring of which is that all the world maps are marked with the USSR.This leads me to doubt a lot of other information in the book, such as "current" trends in European air traffic control and the global reach of LORAN-C.Still, I doubt that the basic systems described have changed that much in the intervening years. It does have INS and GPS. ... Read more
