Extractions: Scripps Howard News Service How did this happen? One minute we're all enjoying summer, and the next minute it's back to school. You know what that means: It's time once again to start packing the dreaded lunch. But, said Karen Erickson, a Denver home economist and mother of four, with a little imagination, packing lunch can be more pleasure than chronic pain. "To make it interesting for me, I try to come up with something fun and balanced," she said. The payoff can be huge. "It's fun when Peter comes home from school and says, 'Wow,' or 'Mom, I really liked the tuna without the bread.' That makes me feel like it's worthwhile."

Listed below are the different committees that are chaired by volunteer parents: BOOK FAIR The book fair is brought into the school, sponsored by Scholastic Books, and is an organized selling event for our children; selling times are offered during a specific week at school and one night for families. Students, staff and families are given the opportunity to buy books, thus helping our school. A portion of the profits are given back to our school and used to purchase media/technical equipment. Our volunteers for this event help the children in their selections, cashing them out and keeping the shelves stocked each day. An assortment of items, ranging from $.25 and up are brought in and made available for sale to the students. This offers our children the chance to do their very own picking and buying of gifts. The committee group for this event has to select the items, make an inventory, price the items out, set up, assist the students, cash them out and make sure the stock is replenished daily.

The following is a note from an Unqua parent who made sure the toys were distributed to the children, and without whom it wouldn't have happened: Dear Josephine and Karen, Just to let you know the toys collected from Unqua were successfully delivered to the St. Francis DeSales Outreach Center in Patchogue. As you are aware, this was our 14th annual toy drive and the 2nd year that Unqua contributed toys to help make it successful. This year we delivered a total of 9 family-sized trucks to the Center, making it the biggest yet! One SUV was filled with toys just from Unqua. The drive has gotten so large, Father Kevin was able to fill the requests of the Outreach Center and provide the Marines with the rest of the toys. Thank you for your hard work collecting and sorting the toys and for delivering those "last minute" toys to my home. Thank you to all the generous families who helped to get toys to the needy during the holidays.

"Those four words throw up a barrier to the excitement and adventure we hope our students share as we travel the road to learning in our subject areas. The challenge for teachers is to present something new; something challenging and motivating; something within the framework of the students' own experience; and, perhaps most important, something students can succeed at. Early success is the first step on the road that we hope will end in a positive learning experience for our students." This apparent masquerade was part of my school's first-day staff training a staged simulation based on the successful TV series Survivor. It didn't take long, however, to realize that the purpose of this day was about much more than fun. A day spent in an environment in which top-down leadership, ranking, and shaming were the rule taught all of us some valuable lessons about how to create a quality classroom environment. Within minutes of arriving at school, my colleagues and I were ushered into a darkened room filled with eerie smoke (from dry ice), foliage, tiki torches, climbing ropes, and cargo containers. Nutritious and Fun Roll ups are fun and easy to eat. Put your child's favourite filling on a tortilla, fold the top and bottom ends towards the center and roll. Bite sized fruit is easy to eat. Strawberries, grapes, melon balls, and fresh pineapple chunks are all great choices. Vary the types of breads you use in sandwiches... rolls, bagels, English muffins, tortilla's, rye, whole wheat, pumpernickel... variety keeps 'brown bag boredom' at bay.
