Extractions: The FAI played an active part in the recent World Conference on Doping in Sport, working to ensure that air sports remain free of this objectionable form of cheating, which also constitutes a threat to flight safety. The FAI community will soon be invited to adopt the new World Anti-Doping Agencys (WADA) Code, replacing the Olympic Movement Code which FAI competitors have had to follow until now. MORE... In 2005, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale intends to publish a work retracing its first century of existence and the parallel history of air sports. The writing of this book has been entrusted to Pierre Morath, an historian specialising in sport and the Olympic movement. Although the archives of the FAI will provide the bulk of the material needed for this future publication, the FAI is now launching an appeal to its members and associated organisations, and to custodians of historical archives, asking that they also contribute material to this project, which is destined to become an authoritative work of reference.

Extractions: Team RE/MAX Global Balloon Mission - MEDIA UPDATE Media update 09/23/98 Pilots getting Olympic-level fitness advice Dr. Edmund Burke once coached U.S. Olympic cyclists and still counsels various Olympians in the areas of training, psychology and nutrition. What he's doing with the three pilots of the Team RE/MAX Ballooning Mission is not so different. "I guess the challenge I have is taking a group of very successful people in their fields and helping them attain a higher level of fitness, strength and immunity to weather the stress and duration of the flight," says Burke, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The city is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Burke has been a consultant to Team RE/MAX since shortly after the mission's announcement in May. The fitness aspect of the pilots' preparation started with a complete physiological examination at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. If all goes according to plan, Dave Liniger, Bob Martin and John Wallington will be together in a 7-foot by 8-foot capsule for 16-18 days, 24 miles above the Earth. Stress, sleep deprivation, and fatigue are guaranteed byproducts, but Burke hopes to minimize the toll they exact.

And many of the outstanding and memorable performances have come from female athletes. As Im sure you know, the very first modern Olympics, in 1896, banned women from competing. And in a moment, well go back to the early history and controversies that have surrounded female participation in the Olympics. First though, a couple of the memorable moments, so far at these Games, from Australian sportswomen, past and present.

Extractions: Four's a Crowd Hot-hitting Daryle Ward is odd man out in the Astros' loaded outfield By Stephen Cannella Daryle Ward's nickname in the Astros' clubhouse used to be Oscar, a nod to his thick Afro, which resembled outfielder Oscar Gamble's famously lush 1970s 'do. Then Ward showed up this spring with his hair in neatly braided rows, meaning that his teammates had to come up with a new moniker. "Moises [Alou] was calling me the Answer, after Allen Iverson, for a while," he says, "but that didn't really catch on." Despite hitting .400 with 10 RBIs, Ward was to go to the bench when Alou returned from the DL. Darren Carroll Ward would answer to anything if it meant seeing his name on the lineup card every day. For an outfielder in Houston this year, this is what a .400 average and 10 RBIs in the season's first 12 games gets you: a seat on the bench. Such is life for the 25-year-old Ward, who, despite those impressive numbers, was headed for the pine as of Monday because regular outfielder Alou was scheduled to return from the disabled list. On most other clubs Ward's potent bat would earn him an every-day gig, but with the Astros he's just another slugging outfielder. Alou, Ward, centerfielder Richard Hidalgo and rightfielder Lance Berkman combined to make Houston's outfield the most productive (117 home runs and 366 RBIs) in the majors last season. Through Sunday that group (minus Alou, who went on the disabled list with a strained calf the last week of spring training) was second in the majors in RBIs with 32, a big reason that the 8-4 Astros were off to their best start since 1988.
