Extractions: Primitive Baptist churches in southern Appalachia can be traced back to the late 18th century when the first generation of settlers moved into the region. When the Baptists split in the 1830s over missionary work, these churches adopted a conservative position, believing in a predestinarian interepretation of the doctrines of grace and election, and took the name Old School or Primitive Baptist. They remained a leading denomination in the region throughout the nineteenth century and small churches aver aging about twenty-five members are vigorously supported today. (Patterson,161) We believe in one true and living God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost and these three are one. We believe that scriptures of the Old and New Testament as translated in the 1611 King James version of the Holy Bible is the written word of God and the only rule of faith and practice. We believe in the doctrine of election by grace.

He was formerly pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Coalfield, where he was the pastor for a little over eight years. "I am very excited for the wonderful opportunity to pastor the church at Kellytown Baptist," a church press release quotes him as saying. "Never before have the people of our churches encountered the kinds of challenges that they must face each day in today's world. "Every church needs a caring, loving pastor and that is my goal. I intend to be a very active pastor for our church and community. God's work is needed everywhere and I plan to obey his plan wherever he may send me," Smith stated. Smith attended Clear Creek Bible College in Pineville, Ky., while serving as the pastor in Lake City. He was ordained as a minister on May 7, 1978, at Atkins Baptist Church in Corryton, Tenn. Since beginning his ministry as a pastor in 1978, Smith has served at Gethsemane Baptist Church in South Knoxville; Longfield Baptist Church in Lake City; Black Oak Baptist Church in Clinton; Royce Baptist in Oak Ridge; and Pleasant Grove Baptist in Coalfield.

We consider ourselves simply and essentially Christian. Baptist is only a brand name. Like on the grocery store shelf where you might have applesauce in jars or cans under different labels, perhaps with various ingredients, but all without question being applesauce. Baptist is primarily a historical designation of Christians who hold to a group of distinctives which only they hold in totality. Others may believe and practice some or most of these, but usually not as a whole. While others may to hold to anyone of these distinctives, Baptist hold to all of them. Here are the distinctives: Biblical Authority : In other words, we do not place ecclesiastical creeds into a place of supreme authority. We believe the Bible, Gods Word, is our only document for faith and practice. Soul Liberty : We strongly. hold to the concept that every human being has the right to believe and teach as he or she chooses, even though such beliefs may be contrary to what we believe to be true and Biblical. We may thoroughly disagree with that person's position and may be deeply dismayed by what we may perceive to be even a self -destructive path. That means also we strongly support religious freedom, and oppose the establishment of laws that support Christianity but oppose other religious views. It was Baptist influence that brought freedom of religion into the USA Bill of Rights, in strong contrast to the state church concepts of Europe at the time.

Most members teach at Baptist-affiliated schools, colleges, and seminaries, but members also hail from a wide range of institutions in the United States, Canada, and abroad, including church-related and state-supported schools. Sixty persons adopted a constitution and elected the first slate of officers.
