Giving to Athletics Head Coach Office: 310 Stadium Bill Breene is set to begin his fourth season as head coach of the recently resurrected UB baseball program. After almost a 20-year absence, the University at Buffalo reinstated baseball as a varsity sport in November of 1998 and began play as an NCAA Division I independent in 2000. Last season (2002) marked UB's second as a member of the Mid-American Conference, a conference nationally recognized for its rich baseball tradition. The return to coaching for Breene signified a career that has come full circle. He began his career in intercollegiate athletics as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. Breene attended USM as both an undergraduate and graduate student, majoring in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Athletic Administration and Coaching, respectively. "When Bob Arkeilpane asked me if I would be interested in rebuilding our baseball program, I was thrilled," Breene said. "Having been here (UB) throughout the entire athletic upgrade endeavor, I knew that Bob would give us the support and opportunity to be successful. He's done that by providing us with a budget to compete, allowing us to travel to regions where we can get games in early March, and continuing efforts to renovate Amherst Audubon Field to a level comparable to other MAC schools. In two short years, we have built a great foundation for the future of the program."

The two energetically slap hands and Mooney turns to cheer for the next introduced player. She and her teammates prepare to battle Duke. While this is only one, specific snapshot of Mia Mooney, it is a snapshot that one can see at every game and at every practice. It is an image of a spirited and determined athlete who wants nothing more than to see her teammates succeed. Whether it is pumping up the team, scoring goals, or rushing for a ground ball, Mooney does everything with tireless energy. The fourth year captain is a dynamic leader. "I try to be someone that the team respects and believes in. I want my teammates to be able to come to me and to be someone that they can trust," Mooney said. Her teammates can also trust her to put points on the board. Two goals against Duke in the ACC semifinals and one goal against Maryland in the finals, pushed her to the 100 point plateau. Mooney has 71 career goals and 29 career assists. She is only the 18th player in Virginia lacrosse history to tally 100 points. She currently ranks third on the team in scoring with 18 goals and is also third on the team in assists with seven.

Extractions: Dietary supplement use is a common practice among athletes. As a former Division I student-athlete, I am aware of the prevalence of supplement use. Word of a new "great" product took little time to get around; it didn't take much more time before most athletes either were taking it or being told they should take it. Claims of increased energy, improved performance, gains in muscle strength and quickened recovery times appeal to this population. Furthermore, the athlete's desire to gain any possible edge over the competition, combined with supplement availability due to the 1994 Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act (DSHEA), fuels a demand for supplements that shows no sign of slowing down. The DSHEA affirms that dietary supplements are to be regulated as food and not drugs, which means the burden of proof is placed on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to show that a dietary supplement is unsafe before it has to be removed from the marketplace. The act also defines supplements as products intended to supplement the diet and may contain vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, other dietary substances, or combinations or extracts of any of these dietary ingredients.

His latest is the story of the fourth of seven children born to poor Swedish immigrants, and it seems Babe's life was set up for struggle. During her life she fought poverty, gender stereotyping, the world's confusion at a female athlete whose passion for, and skill at sports crossed boundaries, until she met her final contender-cancer. Freedman does an excellent job of surrounding Babe in historical and personal context so her individualistic and sometimes apparently self-proud persona makes total sense. The book is filled with wonderful photographs, pithy quotations, and the depth of research and understanding for which Freeman is deservedly esteemed. 2000, Clarion, $18.00, Ages 9 up. I am very pleased with the balance in this class and our ability to meet many of the specific personnel needs we had in our program." Statistically, you can see where he is an accomplished passer as well as an accomplished runner and playmaker. I look for great things from Chris Kelley. Chris expressed to me that he chose Maryland because it is his state university. Chris's goal is to be the quarterback that leads Maryland to an ACC championship. We were not looking to sign a junior college quarterback. One of our assistant coaches, Mike Gundy , had the task of prospecting junior colleges nationwide in search of specific needs. Extractions: September 2002 Upon Further Review Coaching Resume "Irregularities" Force Closer Look, Locals Not Immune By John E. Sacco Relying on the honesty and integrity of a new coach or athletic administrator is not good enough anymore for universities and colleges across the nation. The embarrassment of finding out that a school's new coach or athletic director isn't what he or she said they were can be overwhelming and bewildering. Within days of being hired as Notre Dame's football coach, George O'Leary admitted he had lied on his resume. He never lettered in football at New Hampshire as he claimed, and he did not earn a master's degree from New York University. The former Georgia Tech coach was disgraced, as was the Fighting Irish's process in hiring him. Tyrone Willingham, who is perceived nationally to be an honorable man who ran a clean and quality program at Stanford was brought in to restore order. Had it not happened at Notre Dame, it is unlikely the matter would have received the national attention it did. But it brought the issue of simple clerical errors, half-truths and long-forgotten lies on resumes to light and within weeks inaccuracies were found in biographical information of coaches in Division I football and basketball across the country.
