The Recreation Studies curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive program that includes both basic and practical knowledge in the field of recreation. Both major and minor curricula are offered. Note: Most courses offered through the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences can be retaken up to two times (i.e., one initial registration and two retakes). Variable-credit courses usually cannot be retaken (i.e., with the initial grade being removed), but can be repeated for credit to count toward your degree. While no limit has been set for repeats of PED courses, individual majors, schools, departments, and colleges may limit the number of such hours that can count toward graduation. Selected admission to the major is gained through an on-campus interview and the completion of curriculum application materials, in addition to the regular university application materials, before February 1. This is when critics all over the world of porn are scrambling through their notes, piles of screeners and helpful suggestions from PR people to pick the very best from the year in smut. I've been gathering the names of performers, directors and movies that will vie for the coveted Rog Reviews Awards, but you're going to have to wait for those announcements. For now, everyone will have to settle for news and happenings from around the X Rated World. I led off last month's column by talking about the start of the baseball playoffs. It took nearly the entire month to whittle the field of eight down to a single championship team. I was lucky enough to have tickets for the entire playoff run for the Anaheim Angels. Considered huge underdogs to the mighty Yankees, the Angels advanced to face the Twins in the American League Championship Series. The Twins were no match either and that set up an all-California World Series between the Angels and the Giants. Last month I asked for another seven game thriller and that is exactly what we got. Trailing 3 games to 2, the Angels put together an amazing weekend to win the series in 7. Exciting doesn't even begin to describe just how amazing the series was. Congratulations to the Angels for a fantastic season and a great run in the playoffs.

Extractions: The Rochester Review, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, USA As Rochester Review was going to press, word arrived that Steven Chu '70 had been named co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics. Chu, along with William Phillips and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, was cited for developing novel ways to cool atoms to super-low temperatures with laser light. The work allows researchers to manipulate matter at a temperature that was previously unattainable, and raises the possibility of technologies based in the subatomic realm of quantum physics. "The new methods of investigation that the Nobel laureates have developed have contributed greatly to increasing our knowledge of the interplay between radiation and matter," the citation from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. The work, the citation added, "may lead to the design of more-precise atomic clocks for use in space navigation and accurate determination of position." The three investigators worked independently of each other. A laser-cooling method, developed by Chu while working at Bell Laboratories in 1985, works by bombarding atoms from all sides of six lasers. A double major at Rochester, Chu graduated in 1970 with a B.S. in physics and a B.A. in mathematics. As a senior, he won the Stoddard Prize for the best term paper by a physics major. One of his former professors, Thomas Ferbel, professor of physics and astronomy, remembers that Chu liked to stay around after class, talking physics. "You had to kick him out periodically," he recalls. "He was a fine lad, and a superb student," Ferbel says.

The University of Akron will add women's swimming and diving to its intercollegiate athletics program, Akron Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski announced today. Women's swimming will become the 18th varsity sport at Akron, and the eighth women's sport. UA currently sponsors nine men's sports and rifle, which is co-ed. The inaugural season for the Zips swimming and diving team will be the 1998-99 campaign. There are currently seven Mid-American Conference schools that sponsor women's swimming and diving: Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Northern Illinois and Toledo. When Buffalo joins the conference, that will bring the total number of MAC teams to nine. "I'm excited about the addition of women's swimming and diving to our intercollegiate athletic program," said Bobinski. "We have an outstanding facility in the Ocasek Natatorium, strong local/regional high school and club programs to recruit from, and a very competitive conference affiliation. With an enthusiastic and experienced coach like Brian Vereb leading the way, we believe this program can move rapidly from start-up to contender." Brian Vereb (pronounced VER-eb), a North East, Pa. native, will be the inaugural head coach for the Akron women's swimmimg and diving program. Vereb is a 1992 graduate of The College of Wooster, where he earned his degree in exercise physiology. He then worked as an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming programs at Wooster for three seasons before moving to Ball State, where he worked with the Cardinals' women's program for two seasons. During his tenure with Ball State, the women's program posted its first undefeated season and entered the national rankings. Vereb is currently an assistant women's coach at Fresno State.
