The Twins were no match either and that set up an all-California World Series between the Angels and the Giants. Last month I asked for another seven game thriller and that is exactly what we got. Trailing 3 games to 2, the Angels put together an amazing weekend to win the series in 7. Exciting doesn't even begin to describe just how amazing the series was. Congratulations to the Angels for a fantastic season and a great run in the playoffs.

The University of Akron will add women's swimming and diving to its intercollegiate athletics program, Akron Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski announced today. Women's swimming will become the 18th varsity sport at Akron, and the eighth women's sport. UA currently sponsors nine men's sports and rifle, which is co-ed. The inaugural season for the Zips swimming and diving team will be the 1998-99 campaign. There are currently seven Mid-American Conference schools that sponsor women's swimming and diving: Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Northern Illinois and Toledo. When Buffalo joins the conference, that will bring the total number of MAC teams to nine. "I'm excited about the addition of women's swimming and diving to our intercollegiate athletic program," said Bobinski. "We have an outstanding facility in the Ocasek Natatorium, strong local/regional high school and club programs to recruit from, and a very competitive conference affiliation. With an enthusiastic and experienced coach like Brian Vereb leading the way, we believe this program can move rapidly from start-up to contender." Brian Vereb (pronounced VER-eb), a North East, Pa. native, will be the inaugural head coach for the Akron women's swimmimg and diving program. Vereb is a 1992 graduate of The College of Wooster, where he earned his degree in exercise physiology. He then worked as an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming programs at Wooster for three seasons before moving to Ball State, where he worked with the Cardinals' women's program for two seasons. During his tenure with Ball State, the women's program posted its first undefeated season and entered the national rankings. Vereb is currently an assistant women's coach at Fresno State.
