CHICAGO WHITE SOX The White Sox have won three of their first six Interleague games winning two against the Mets, but dropping two to the Expos, all at home. They travel this weekend across town to take on the Cubs. The Sox are still chasing the Twins (four games back), but now find themselves fending off the surging Indians, as well. Tony Graffanino has performed well in limited playing time. He's appeared in just 34 games, but is hitting .308 with 23 RBI, including both RBI in last night's 2-1 win over the Mets. Extractions: -Other 103rd BOSTON MARATHON Suspension takes Pippig from road to broadcast booth By Barbara Huebner, Globe Staff, 04/19/99 ince the day she sailed her way into this city's heart by finishing a sparkling second in the 1990 Boston Marathon, her US debut after leaving East Germany, marathoning brought Uta Pippig little but joy and success. Even the setbacks - the worst being forced to drop out of the 1996 Olympics with a leg injury - seemed temporary, a brief chop on life's ocean that soon would calm again as Pippig resumed her voyage toward immortality in the sport. After all, how could anything swamp an athlete who earned her third straight Boston Marathon victory, as she did at the 100th running in 1996, by coming from nowhere in the last miles while suffering from stomach cramps and relentless diarrhea? Then, last October, the 33-year-old Pippig was suspended by the German athletic federation for failing a routine out-of-competition drug test. Unable to compete during the suspension and facing a two-year ban if found guilty, Pippig suddenly finds herself looking for a lifeline to save her career.

Extractions: One hundred years ago, West Point watched as its graduates saw combat in the first major international conflict in American history. The Monroe Doctrine had kept American soldiers on American soil for the greater part of the Academys history. Graduates had been involved in the Civil War and fought skirmishes during the Indian Wars, but for the first time, in 1898, they were fighting on foreign soil as the US made its debut as a world power. The American battleship the Maine was sent to Cuba as a show of force as rebels were fighting with the Spanish forces there. The battleship blew up in Havana Harbor, triggering the Spanish-American War. The four month conflict freed Cuba from Spanish rule and made Puerto Rico a possession of the US. Americans also fought the Spanish in the Philippines, which likewise was seeking its independence from Spain. For the conflict with Spain, 50,000 men were transported to battlefields in the tropics12,000 miles apartwhere they won their victories without a single defeat, all within a period of 113 days from the declaration of war to the signing of the surrender protocol. New developments in the art of war had battlefield commanders communicating by telephone and regular army soldiers using smokeless powder in their weapons for the first time. The strategic movement of these soldiers was the Armys responsibility. The Quartermaster Corps owned 11 ships when war was declared, bought 69 more in the ensuing months and chartered about 60 for specific missions. The West Point Class of 1898 watched as the nation prepared and left the Academy eager to use their recent training and join in the war effort.

The 2000 recruiting class is another illustration of the improvement we continue to make. I am very pleased with the balance in this class and our ability to meet many of the specific personnel needs we had in our program." Quarterback "Obviously we are extremely excited to have someone with Chris Kelley's talent coming to Maryland. Statistically, you can see where he is an accomplished passer as well as an accomplished runner and playmaker. I look for great things from Chris Kelley. Chris expressed to me that he chose Maryland because it is his state university. Chris's goal is to be the quarterback that leads Maryland to an ACC championship. We were not looking to sign a junior college quarterback. One of our assistant coaches, Mike Gundy , had the task of prospecting junior colleges nationwide in search of specific needs. During his search, he uncovered Shaun Hill. As a former quarterback and quarterback coach himself, he thought Shaun was an outstanding prospect. He then transferred the tape to offensive coordinator
