Extractions: Dec. 3, 2001 by Trent Packer In 1918, the Boston Red Sox were on the top of the world, having clinched their fifth World Series title. The team's ascendancy was due in part to the prowess of slugger Babe Ruth, who continued to play well even when the Sox failed to make the Series the following season. However, members of Red Sox management were often at odds with Ruth and, in 1920, they decided to sell Babe, or "Bambino" as he was often called, to the New York Yankees for $125,000 cash and a $300,000 mortgage on Fenway Park. Now, more than 80 years later, sportscasters still refer to that infamous business transaction and its aftermath, known as "The Curse of the Bambino." For after Babe traveled South to New York, the Red Sox never won a World Series again and the Yankees have collected 26 championship titles, the most of any team in professional sports. The Curse of the Bambino and tales of other sports jinxes have turned the ballpark, the stadium and the court into veritable hotbeds of superstition and quirky rituals. Today's generation of Red Sox and Yankees are keeping those "traditions" alive. Star Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens makes sure to touch the monument to Babe Ruth in Monument Park just outside Yankee Stadium before his appearances on the mound. Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra wards off any lingering hexes by stepping on each dugout step with both feet and by tugging at his batting gloves and tapping his shoes during each at bat. The list of athletes with game-day rituals is seemingly endless, and it spans the world of sports. Even a self-assured superstar like Michael Jordan has admitted he always wore blue basketball shorts from his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, under his Chicago Bulls uniform.

Coach Stan Cromartie, in his fifth year as head coach, has high expectations for this year's team. Returning starters Kitus Witherspoon and Daniel Jackson will be complemented by the addition of J.D. Bracy, Justin Anderson and Josh Houston. With several highly recruited freshmen also expected to contribute, this year has the potential to be very exciting and extremely promising. After the Lady Raiders posted back-to-back conference championships, first year head coach Lisa Nuxol is ready to begin her own tradition of excellence. Coach Nuxol has assembled an experienced coaching staff and talented group of young players with the desire and drive to meet the goals set before them. Add in three returning players from last year's conference championship team and you have the foundation for a successful season. At SCC we take just as much pride in how the student athletes perform in the classroom and in the community as they do on the court. Last year, 18 student athletes were named to the Academic All-Conference Team, nine student athletes were named to the All-State Academic Team, and two student athletes achieved Academic All-American status. In addition, each of our athletic teams performed numerous community service projects throughout the year.

The online certificate program was designed by the NBDL and Michigan State as a part of MSU's Global Online Connection, which focuses on developing custom learning programs for a wide range of organizations, and will be able to meet the individual educational interests of athletes. "The NBDL is all about development and our Michigan State University partnership stands as a great example," said Janice Hilliard, director of player programs. "We look forward to expanding the program and the number of participants in the years ahead." The NBDL and MSU, which is considered one of the leading online educational institutions in the nation, launched this year's pilot program with six participants: North Charleston Lowgators forwards Sedric Webber and Antonio Grant, Fayetteville Patriots guard Brian Wardle and center Jeff Aubry, and Mobile Revelers guard Isaac Fontaine and head coach Sam Vincent.
