Before 1992, baseball had often been seen in various exhibition and demonstration games throughout modern Olympic history. In time, baseball became so popular that it was scheduled to become an official sport at the 1940 Olympic Games in Japan. However, due to World War II, the Games were canceled and baseball was overlooked as an official Olympic sport for the next 52 years. The Olympic Committee formally decided baseball would be an official sport in 1992.

USA Volleyball: Benefiting From Multi-Sport Athletes volleyball athletes may be the best basketball/ soccer/lacrosse Athletic skills notspecific to volleyball are also enhanced in athletes playing multiple http://www.usavolleyball.org/educat/articles/article_leroy.htm
Extractions: BENEFITING FROM (AND COPING WITH) MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES After his initial remarks on the subject (quoted above), Liskevych briefly explained that the physical and mental advantages that multiple sport athletes have over volleyball -only athletes can heavily outweigh the inherent problems. How Does the Athlete Benefit? Physical benefits of playing multiple sports include greater development of muscle groups, greater overall fitness and enhanced coordination. Athletes who play multiple sports have the opportunity to develop different muscle groups. An athlete who has overall strength will be a better volleyball player than one who has only been playing volleyball. Total body fitness is the basic idea of cross training, which has become a basis for athletic development in the off-season. Why not let a player have fun playing another sport while they train? If we are using warm-ups that include football (a national team drill), free throw shooting and obstacle courses (Mattux, 1991), are we not we suggesting that these activities are useful? Psychological benefits include greater self-esteem, problem solving enhancement, learning how to win and lose and better access to more role models.

Extractions: Ed Cunningham Ed Cunningham is seeking a seat in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 2002. Ed has represented both labor and big business at the highest levels, received the D. Harold Byrd Leadership Award, graduated magna cum laude from law school, was voted MVP of the University of Texas Football Team, and earned Academic All-American honors. Eds parents, two school teachers, reared him in rural West Texas. Chester, the child of depression migrant farm workers, earned a master's degree in psychology and certification in educational administration. Gladys, a dryland farmer's daughter, earned a master's degree in English. Chester served at various levels of school administration from junior high and high school principal to supe rintendent of schools, retiring in 1990 from his career in education after seventeen years as superintendent of the Sanford-Fritch Independent School District in Fritch, Texas. Gladys still teaches English for Borger ISD, and Chester now is a financial advisor, educating clients about retirement issues, long-term financial planning, and investments. Clovis Hale, the offensive line coach at the University of Texas, said, "Ed was the slowest offensive lineman I ever coached, but he was also the toughest and smartest." Despite Ed's lack of natural athletic ability, his teammates made him the first offensive lineman in University of Texas football history to be voted the Team MVP. Ed still claims the votes were miscounted. He was also given the Team Leadership Award and was voted Team Captain.

Extractions: Two days off. Our match this past Sunday was the last of an exhausting stretch of seven matches in eleven days. The team was clearly tired after all of these matches, particularly as a result of the final road trip to Georgia Tech and Clemson over the weekend. We were definitely disappointed after the weekend because as a whole we played quite well and came very close to winning three matches at the top of our lineup, which would've been enough to upset Georgia Tech. Coach Boland recognized that our guys were a little beat up after the past eleven days and rewarded us with two days off. After these two days, we'll begin the final stretch of our season, where we have our last five regular season matches and ACC Tournament. Wednesday, April 3

Extractions: Dietary supplement use is a common practice among athletes. As a former Division I student-athlete, I am aware of the prevalence of supplement use. Word of a new "great" product took little time to get around; it didn't take much more time before most athletes either were taking it or being told they should take it. Claims of increased energy, improved performance, gains in muscle strength and quickened recovery times appeal to this population. Furthermore, the athlete's desire to gain any possible edge over the competition, combined with supplement availability due to the 1994 Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act (DSHEA), fuels a demand for supplements that shows no sign of slowing down. The DSHEA affirms that dietary supplements are to be regulated as food and not drugs, which means the burden of proof is placed on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to show that a dietary supplement is unsafe before it has to be removed from the marketplace. The act also defines supplements as products intended to supplement the diet and may contain vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, other dietary substances, or combinations or extracts of any of these dietary ingredients.
