Conquered by German tribes, Christianised by the 7th century and carved up during the Frankish Empire in 1100, much of Belgium enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and artistry under the French Duke of Burgundy during the 14th century. This was a boom time for the cloth-trading Flemish towns of Ypres, Bruges and Ghent. With the demise of Bruges due to British competition and a silted river, Antwerp soon became the greatest port in Europe. The golden age began to tarnish in the mid-15th century when the Low Countries (present-day Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) were inherited by Spain, igniting a long battle against Catholic Spanish rule. The fanatically Catholic Philip II of Spain sent in the Inquisition to enforce Catholicism. Thousands were imprisoned or executed before full-scale war erupted in 1568. The Revolt of the Netherlands lasted 80 years and in the end Holland and its allied provinces booted out the Spaniards. Belgium and Luxembourg stayed under Spanish rule. Napolean's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo near Brussels led to the creation, in 1814, of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, melding Belgium and Luxembuorg into the Netherlands. But the Catholic Belgians revolted, winning independence in 1830. Despite Belgium's neutral policy, the Germans invaded in 1914. Another German attack in 1940 saw the entire country taken over within three weeks. King Leopold III's questionably early capitulation to the Germans led to his abdication in 1950 in favour of his son, King Baudouin, whose popular reign ended with his death in 1993. Childless, Baudouin was succeeded by his brother, the present King Albert II.

Hereafter is my translation/rendition from German of the most interesting parts ( i.e. nearly everything) of the original paper. The original paper is available online Ivan Sache , 8 April 2001 by French First Empire , the Vienna Congress decided to unify Belgium and Holland under William I's rule. The new kingdom of the Netherlands inherited more than 200 vessels abandoned by France in the ports of Den Helder and Antwerp . Since those vessels were old, the king decided to start a reconstruction program and it took 15 years to build 34 new vessels. Holland and Belgium shared the costs. These warships as well as the merchant navy hoisted the horizontally divided red-white-blue ensign, already known in the XVIth century.

Shortly after his return to the regiment, men of the 504 knew that they'd "had it". The enemy had broken through into Belgium and Luxembourg with a powerful thrust launched south of Aachen. Immediately after being alerted, personnel of the 504 went into a frenzy of packing and preparation for combat. "A" and "B" bags were packed and stored, combat shortages filled, ammunition and rations drawn. Dawn of the 18th found the regiment a little short on sleep, but in every other sense, fully equipped and ready for combat. Big trailer-trucks had roared into the area during the night and were waiting to take the paratroopers to the scene of the breakthrough; most men were grouchy and in no mood to go back into action; they had just begun to relax from the Holland mission. However, with remarks such as, "Well, I'd rather go in these things than in a damn C-47", and "Why aren't they making us walk - it's only 200 miles", they resigned themselves to their fate. Thirteen hours after leaving Sissone, the convoy unsnarled itself from a traffic jam and unloaded at Werbomont, Belgium. On the way, the destination had been changed from Bastogne to Werbomont - a point more seriously threatened.

On January 2, 1945, the 1st Battalion left its reserve position around Bra, to relieve the 325th Glider Infantry on the right flank. Enemy artillery fire increased in intensity, setting fire to many buildings in Bra with incendiary shells. The 504, relieved in the Bra sector on January 4, by the 329th Infantry, marched 15 miles to Fosse. The 2nd and 3rd Battalions immediately went into the attack and gained their objective - the high ground southeast of Fosse overlooking the Salm River. Enemy resistance to the advance was generally light, consisting mainly of small isolated units. Several poorly organized enemy counter-attacks in company strength were broken up by the 3rd Battalion with heavy losses to the enemy in both casualties and prisoners. The quality of enemy soldiers encountered at this time was far inferior to those met in earlier stages of the breakthrough. Whereas first contact with the enemy had been made with SS Panzer Grenadiers - first class opponents - the regiment was now fighting a heterogeneous mass of second-rate troops consisting of raw, ill-trained recruits, satellite troops, and "drafted" Russians. The degree of resistance offered by the enemy was in proportion to the inferior quality of their personnel. On the 9th, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Battalions, and the 551st Parachute Battalion, which had been attached to the 504 the day before, jumped off on an attack to reach the West Bank of the Salm River. In the early phases of the attack, enemy infantry and artillery resistance was stubborn. However, as the attack progressed, resistance waned with only the 2nd Battalion meeting any real opposition in the final stages of the advance.

    Extractions: History of Belgium Between 57 and 50 B.C. Julius Cesar conquered the northern part of Gaul, the area lying roughly in the basins of the Scheldt and the Meuse. The land was inhabited then by Gallo-Celtic tribes, including the BELGAE. Between 15 B.C. and the fifth century it was under Roman occupation as Gallia Belgica until Rome weakened and the Francs began to penetrate the region. As a result of the advance of the Franks, a Germanic people, in the 5th century, the Flemings prevailed in the north (an area stretching from the lower Scheldt to the Ardennes) , separating them from the WALA (Walloons or Romanized Celts), whose Latin influence underlies the French language of the region. And so, the ethnic and linguistic frontiers of today had their beginning. Upon Charlemagne's death, the area later known as Belgium, was among the first objectives of invaders and remained a battlefield for hundreds of years.

It is copied exactly from the book except that I have capitalized surnames. The town of Belgium forms the northeast boundary of Ozaukee County, and comprises all of Township 12, Range 22, and a fractional Township 12, Range 23. It was set off from the original town of Port Washington, and incorporated in 1848. Among those who took an active part in the organization were John WEYKER, Nicholas SOSLEY, Anthony BARTOL, S. WILGEN, Nicholas WATRY, Nicholas READING, Peter BUWER, Theodore PIERSON, John P. WATRY, Bernard SCHOMER, Nicholas LANGERS and Nicholas WATRY. The first regular meeting was held at the house of John WEYKER, July 11, 1848. John WEYKER was appointed Moderator, and Samuel REYNOLDS, Clerk of the Election. The first school meeting was also held at the house of John WEYKER, when the following officers were elected: District No. 1 - Trustees, Dominique WOLF, Nicholas READING and Anthony BARTOL; Collector, John WEYKER. District No. 2 was formed in 1849.

It was then that the Preacher Saint Gorik built a little chapel on a small island formed by two arms of the Zenne , the river that still is part of Brussels. First written confirmation of the existence of Brussels is given in the year , when the German emperor Otto 2nd gives Low-Lorraine to Carl of France. In those days the island was known as the Island of Saint-Gorik. Carl of France decides to build a castrum (= a sort of fortress) on the island: Brussels is born. At the end of the 10th century, after the death of Carl, Low-Lorraine is taken over by Lambert of Leuven. In the middle of the 11th century Lambert 2nd Baldric decides to build a new castrum at Brussels. He also starts building the first city walls. In 1555 the emperor of that time, Charles V, resigns. His successor is Philip II. After a few years he starts quarrelling with William of Orange, supervisor over Holland, Zealand and Utrecht. William of Orange is a liberal thinking person.
