Extractions: This was our first experience on the mainland of Belize. It was appropriate to start with the history of the country so we made our way to the ruins. Once there, we made the treacherous hike up the 130 foot main temple. The view on top of the temple was breathtaking. A large part of the Belize/Guatemala border was visible from the top of the ruins. On the way down, Leigh Ann stopped to take this postcard like picture. It is evident from this picture that acid rain and other environmental factors have taken its toll on the ruins. When we finished our tour, we posed for a group photo under the sign. 2. Jaguar Paw (cave tubing experience) Many people have been tubing before, but how many of you have gone through a cave and jungle? For those of you who haven't, the experience was awesome. First we hiked about a mile through the rain forest where we saw a tarantula in the wild. Then we made it to the mouth of the cave where we stopped to pose for a picture. We gracefully got onto our tubes and held our breaths as we entered the darkness. The only light that could be seen was the shimmering light coming from our head gear. All was well until Leigh Ann and Jen got stuck on an island of rock. But surprisingly, everyone survived.

Approximately 200,000 people in Belize consist of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and Eastern Indian. Due to racial harmony and religious tolerance, all of these different elements have mixed and blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly peoples. One of the most prominent ethnic group is the Creoles, which formed 30% of the population in 1991. Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves from Jamaica. More than 40% of the population are Mestizos. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Another 6.6% of Belize's population are the Garifuna, but has decreased since 1980. The Garifuna have their own language and culture. The Yucatec, Mopan and Kekchi are three Amerindians groups which also make up Belize's population. The Chinese, with a population of 6,000 has made distinct communities, as well as the East Indians and the Mennonites. English remains the most common language spoken as well as Creole, but Spanish is becoming more widely spoken. The Garifuna , Mayans and Mennonites speak their own language.

Extractions: Another influence that the Garifuna had in their defining lines of their culture was the obvious influence of the French during the beginning stages of colonial development in the New World. It was during this time that French missionaries were exploring the region of the Caribbean and teaching the Island Caribs many words of their native tongue, including the use of French numbers and counting systems. Certain expressions were than fused with the Arawak language that the Island Caribs were speaking. This created the Garifuna language that can still be heard counting in French today (Global Neighbors: Garifuna history, 1). All of these things combined have provided a brief understanding of who the Garifuna are, and where they come from. Furthermore, it has become apparent through reference points to other cultures and more in-depth studies of the Garifuna that their roots were cultivated in many places around the globe. For example, the traditions of their music dance, religious rites, and rituals are all very much seeded in their link to their African ancestry. While the Garinagu forms of subsistence, on the other hand, are more associated with their Island Carib ancestors. Even the European settlers of the New World had a very profound effect on the development of the Garifuna culture. The same culture that is characterized by the blending of distant pieces of worldly influences, driven by the human intuition to survive, and fueled by the desire for freedom.

My daughters more or less, do the same sort of thing today. Trying to dream up something to feed the tourist industry. Or something, or somebody. You have to sell a service. And provide it. There is always a demand for something, you just have to find it. There are no jobs, so what are you going to do? You have to create work. That is the true nature of Belize. I guess in the Toledo Hills there is nobody to sell anything to. But I doubt that, I bet I could go to a remote Mayan village and start some kind of business, but I probably will sell to tourists, not fellow villagers and try to attract a tourist flow. I think any of my girls could settle in a Mayan hill village and create a business. It would be tough going for awhile, but after a year or two, there would be a cash flow of some sort. In Belize, you have to keep hopping as an entrepreneur. You start a business and it works, within 18 months, copycat businesses start up, to divide the small pie of income into smaller pieces.
