Our only source of information about the Beothuk language is lists of vocabulary collected from a handful of British slaves. Most of these unfortunates were children or young women whose families had been killed by the English when they were kidnapped, and I can't be the only one skeptical about the quality of the linguistic information these traumatized youths provided. For whatever reason, the vocabulary sets are small and don't match each other perfectly, and nothing was recorded about the structure of the language at all. Many scholars believe it was an Algonquian language, possibly related to Innu . It's unlikely this will ever be conclusively proven or disproven due to the paucity of data. People: Many American Indian cultures are wrongly said to be "extinct" when in fact they have only been relocated or forced into a different lifestyle. The Beothuk, however, really are extinct. The only natives of the eastern seaboard to ally with neither the French nor the English (or, for that matter, the Iroquois Confederacy or the Wabanaki Confederacy ), the Beothuk paid a heavy price for their isolation and were attacked from all sides. The claim that the French paid the

Neither of us is a web designer. (I, Orrin, am barely computer-literate, to be honest. Many thanks to Laura Redish for her help.) But this site has inner beauty, for it is, or will be, a compendium of the indigenous American languages of the Western Hemisphere. Click here for links to general American Indian language resources. NOTE Some of the links we provide are more useful than others. We are not responsible for the content of any of the sites we link to. We have tried to provide the most complete directory of Native American Indian language materials available. If a link is dead, or you have one to add, or if there is a mistake on our site you would like to correct, information you would like us to add, or admiration you wish to express, here is our contact page , also with answers to frequently asked questions. Both of these books are arranged by geographic areas of America, providing general tribal information, stories, arts and crafts, and games. For the Black Hawk sub-unit, the primary source of instruction is Two Nations, One Land (see Resources Pages at the end of this unit for complete listings of all sources used). This Unit is designed for a Special Education Classroom of 4th-6th graders with Learning, Mental and Behavior Disabilities. A functional reading level of 1st to 3rd grade skills was incorporated into student choices for all readings and activities. However, the resource materials used are adaptable to a 6th grade curriculum and reading level. Make each student a Native American Unit Folder using a pocket folder. Have students keep and organize all of their work in these folders. Decorate front with blackline master for students to color and decorate (such as the pictures of the regional groupings in Native Americans-A Complete Thematic Unit). Insert into each folder a map of North America, divided into Native American Regions, along with accompanying chart (Native Americans Thematic Unit pg. 74,77). Add a political map of America or North America to show where states/country boundaries exist as compared to tribal boundaries. Make a similar wall chart to complement the students' charts (Native Americans-A Complete Thematic Unit pg. 2). This will be used to mark the geographical boundaries of the nations, compare to current political state boundaries, and examine the influence of geographic conditions on culture.

This unique collection of 120 canoe models represents the boatbuilding traditions and daily vessel use of thirty different Native American peoples. A combination of the IMLS grant and a partnership between the Museum and the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) of Ottawa, Ontario, will allow The Mariners' to complete extensive conservation and ready this historical collection for exhibitions, publications, and programs that will give the public and scholars access to this incomparable collection. "The canoe in Canada and among the northern boundary waters of the United States was as important as the horse to the American West. The Adney collection of model canoes and the extensive archives that accompany them constitute a museum within The Mariners' Museum. Adney's scholarship and research were impeccable," said John Hightower, president and CEO of The Mariners' Museum. "His models are the three-dimensional manifestation of his extraordinary knowledge and insight into the native cultures that created them. This important grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services will make it possible to present them for public viewing once again after a long period in storage."
