Extractions: A Brief History of Bhutan There were many fires and earthquakes in the distant past of Bhutan, and many important documents were destroyed, yet there were certain parts of history saved in sacred places. It is believed that the name Bhutan is from the Sanskrit 'Bhotant,' which means "the end of Tibet," or the Bhu-uttan, meaning "high land." Most people refer to themselves as Kruk Yul, which means "the Hand of The Thunder Dragon," (as thunder echoed across the sky when it was being formed). The Bhutanese also refer to themselves as Drukpa people. In 1616, Shabdrung Nqawang, a Tibetan lama arrived in Bhutan. He formed the dual system of religions and secular government, building the Dzongs system. In 1644, Shabdrung defeated Gushi Khan, the Mongul leader. Then in 1647, Shabdrung defeated him again, as Gushi Khan invaded Bhutan again. Shabdrung died in 1651. Shabdrung practices slowly yielded its power to Druk Desi, who lost control to the Penlops (residential governors). In the 1770s, Bhutan began to encounter the outside world. Moving southward, Bhutan collided with the British East India Company. In 1772, the British entered more into the region and looked on the Bhutanese people with disfavor. Bhutan then expanded eastward. After several clashes with the British, the Treaty of Sinchula was signed in 1865, giving way to an end of hostilities and bringing in peace and friendship. Trade also was opened up. Bhutan gave up rule over some territory, including the Duars to the British, and the British in turn, gave them 50,000 rupees.

Snuggling on the eastern end of the Himalayan range, between India and China, it is relatively inaccessible. Government policy has been to use that inaccessibility to the countrys advantage. No more than 3,000 foreign tourists are admitted in one year for fear of foreign influences taking a hold on the way of life of the countrys mountain people, whose language, Buddhist religion and culture are all closely related to those of the people of Tibet. The tourists spend about US$1.8 million a year, providing an important contribution to the national exchequer, and the ambitious Sixth Development Plan. The plan makes the preservation and promotion of Bhutans rich cultural heritage one of its main objectives. An important aspect of that heritage is the monarchy. King Jigme Singhe Wangchuck sits on the Dragon throne from where he rules his people as both head of state and head of government. But unlike his forebears in a dynasty that was established early this century, the present king does not enjoy absolute powers. Since the constitution was amended in 1969, the king has been accountable to the people through the National Assembly, which can vote for his dismissal. In practice the people seem to look with favour on their young Western-educated monarch. The king also chairs the national planning commission, and has shown a remarkable ability to attract foreign aid to his remote and undeveloped land. As well as diversifying from an overwhelmingly agricultural economy by encouraging small-scale industry, the current development plan emphasises the need to raise the below-20 per cent literacy level and to bring down the high rate of infant mortality. Bhutan is highly dependent on aid from abroad, the bulk of it coming from India, which has a sort of protector status.

Extractions: The First Linguistic Survey of Bhutan was conducted by the author in 1991 at the behest of the Royal Government of Bhutan. A summary of the initial findings is given in the Report of the First Linguistic Survey of Bhutan (1991d). Subsequent fieldwork in remote areas of Bhutan under auspices of the Dzongkha Development Commission led to the preparation of a book entitled The Languages and Linguistic History of Bhutan . The manuscript was submitted to Commission in Thimphu in 1992, and the book was slated for publication by the Royal Government of Bhutan in the following year, following the previous publication of the author's Guide to Official Dzongkha Romanization (1991e) and The Grammar of Dzongkha (1992b). Towards the end of 1993, in consideration of more pressing demands being placed upon the Commission's budget at the close of the Sixth Five-Year Plan period, and in order to realize an effective international distribution of the book, the Commission recommended that the book be published abroad to render it more readily available to a wider readership. This recommendation came too late to prevent the book being listed in the bibliographies of several publications which appeared soon afterwards, i.e. van Driem (1992d, 1993c, 1994a, 1994b, 1994d, 1995a). Instead of publishing the book separately, the author subsequently decided to incorporate all the data contained the original manuscript into the soon-to-appear handbook

Extractions: HISTORY Bhutan's early history is shrouded in the mists of Buddhist tradition and mythology. As most important events of the period involved saints and religious leaders, they were therefore chronicled only in scriptures. Unfortunately due to natural calamities like earthquake and fire, most of these original documents were destroyed and much of this early history relies on reports from British explorers, and on legend and folklore. Archaeological evidence suggests Bhutan was inhabited as early as 1500 BC or possibly even 2000 BC. These early inhabitants were followers of Bon, an animistic tradition that was the main religion of the Himalayan region before the advent of Buddhism. Though Buddhism was introduced as early as the 2nd century, the first Buddhist temples were built only in the 7th century during the reign of the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo in which era the influence of Tibet began to spread to Bhutan. However it was only with the first visit of Padma Sambhava or Guru Rinpoché to Bhutan in the 8th century that Buddhism was truly introduced to Bhutan. Between the 9th and 17th centuries numerous ruling clans and noble families of Tibet settled in different valleys throughout Bhutan following internecine strife in Tibet. It was during this period that the Bhutanese variety of Buddhism, the Drukpa Kagyup, established itself in Bhutan after escaping persecution at the hands of the Gelugpas. By the 16th century, the country was fragmented between many local chiefs. The arrival of the Shabrung Ngawang Namgyal (1594-1651) brought an end through bitter struggle to this division. During his reign, many dzongs and monasteries were constructed. He devised many of Bhutan's customs, traditions and ceremonies to forge a unique cultural identity distinct from Tibet.
