Extractions: USOEC Boxing The U.S. Olympic Education Center is home to one of the premier boxing teams in the nation. Established by USA Boxing in 1987, the USOEC team has produced Olympic, world and national champions. In fact, USOEC boxers accounted for a third of the 2000 U.S. Olympic boxing team and half of the boxing medals won at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. However, thats just part of the story. Located on the campus of Northern Michigan University, USOEC resident athletes live and train in Marquette, Mich., while continuing their education. "The U.S. Olympic Education Center is one of the cornerstones of USA Boxings success, not only in the ring, but also in the classroom," said USA Boxing Executive Director Paul Montville. "In addition to the many champions that have come through the USOEC, there have been just as many champions that have earned high school diplomas and college degrees." Under the direction of Coordinator Edward Yoon and 1996 Olympic Head Coach Al Mitchell, the USOEC resident boxing program is a demanding and rewarding program. To be a USOEC boxer, an athlete must be approved by the USA Boxing, the U.S. Olympic Committee and NMU, and must show satisfactory progress, both academically and competitively, to remain in the program.

Message Board Winter Olympic Sports (Snow) There's nothing quite like a really nasty winter storm that shuts down pretty much everything in the city. There are things that are better, but there's nothing quite like it. It's especially good when everything is shut down before noon and you don't work until 2 pm. What a perfect opportunity to kick back and watch the Olympics. Now, although there are only 14 sports at the winter Olympics, I'm pretty sure that I don't want to rate all of them at one time. So I'm splitting the sports up, going first with snow sports. I'll leave the ice sports and track sports to another article or two. A note here, I'm not rating these sports on difficulty or popularity, I'm going with how they are to watch. If you should happen to compete in any of these sports, and I happen to slam it, well, get over it. Snowboarding : I've never been terribly interested in snowboarding, but when I watched it today, I was impressed with how cool it was to watch. Boarders zipping down the halfpipe and getting some insane air while doing tricks all the while. Plus, it's fast without being overly repetitive. Some of the tricks are very impressive, and it looks like a lot of fun, unlike some other sports. That's a

Cowbells, I'm told, are the most popular way to cheer on biathletes. In case you're not sure just what sport I'm talking about, the biathlon is a cross-country race where contestants periodically stop to fire .22 rifles at targets 50 meters distant. Winter biathletes use cross-country skis to traverse the course, while the summer competitors are on foot, but the sport is essentially the same. The winner is determined by the fastest time. Accuracy in shooting definitely counts (it's factored in by penalties for misses). In the Winter Olympics, for each miss of a target the biathele must ski an extra 150-yard penalty lap before returning to the course. The biathlon is an intense sport requiring extraordinary skills. After several kilometers of flat-out skiing, shooters unshoulder their bolt-action .22 rifles without optical sights, each of which hold five shots, and take one of two positions to fire. From the standing position, the targets are 3"-diameter metal discs. The prone-position targets are about the size of a half-dollar.

Northern Europeans skied to hunt for food and, later, skied with weapons to defend their countries. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. Today it is interpreted as a joining of two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. In 1960, Biathlon joined the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). But in 1993, an agreement was made to retain the Union as an umbrella body under which the UIPM and the IBU could act autonomously. It took effect in 1998, but the two sports maintain relations in various projects. Biathlon consists of eight events in the Olympic program. Men and women compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. Although all biathlon disciplines combine skiing and marksmanship, the sport features several distinct events. Sprint
