Extractions: Academic Priorities in Biotechnology An Interim Report to the Planning Committee from the Biotechnology Task Force February 18, 1999 Table of Contents ABSTRACT We are proposing five new integrated interdisciplinary undergraduate programs in the area of biotechnology. The proposed programs are the culmination to date of an extensive collaborative and consultative process. The five programs build on existing strengths at the university in the area of biotechnology. A key innovation in all programs is to provide students regardless of their base discipline with an introduction to both the science of biotechnology and the social, commercial and ethical issues associated with the growth and development of the science and associated industry. Various national and provincial surveys have identified a need for well-trained personnel in all aspects of biotechnology from laboratory scientists and technicians to directors of biotechnology companies, managers and legislators. Biotechnology firms require workers trained in science and technology. However, biotechnology companies prefer employees who are not only conversant with the science and technological dimensions of the industry but who also understand the commercial, social, political and ethical issues associated with the commercial application of this new domain of scientific knowledge. Companies whose leaders and employees have an understanding of the complexities of these issues are thought to have a better chance of survival and success.

Extractions: The development of genetic engineering or biotechnology attracts support from many quarters. Some are dazzled by the prospects of increased power and profit from the colonisation and industrialisation of evolution's basic building block, the genetic code. Others have less selfish aspirations. Humanistic aspirations to combat crippling physical and mental disorders, for example, lead many sections of the general public to support genetic engineering. So too do hopes that new strains of superproductive plants could put an end to the scourge of world hunger. Many environmentalists are also keen supporters of biotechnology. In 1983, environmental organisations such as the Countryside Commission, World Wildlife Fund and the then Nature Conservancy Council endorsed The Conservation and Development Programme for the UK , which celebrated biotechnology as a 'sunrise industry' and one of 'the environment's growth poles'. In Save the Earth , edited by Jonathon Porritt, Peter Raven, a member of the US National Science Board, claims that 'genetic engineering will widen the reach of our great-grandchildren, enabling them to put together altered kinds of organisms that will be productive indefinitely under the conditions in which they are grown'.

Occasional Paper #2: What Consumers Want To Know Some consumers are concerned about the ethics and safety of transferring genetic labeldescribing the reasons for applications of biotechnology would be agric. http://www.cals.cornell.edu/extension/nabc/pubs/occ_paper_2/Bruhn.html
Extractions: Davis, CA 95616 [published February 1994] Consumer attitudes toward biotechnology are generally positive. However, the public has concerns and questions which should be addressed. These are highlighted by special interest groups who build on fears. Unless balanced by facts and scientific perspective, the number of consumers with concerns could increase. My assessment of consumer interest is based on a review of the literature, including the Hoban and Kendall study, and experiences discussing biotechnology in meetings with chefs, the media and the public. Ethical concerns relate to applications of biotechnology to animals People want the tools of science to be applied to issues of concern People have indicated they will evaluate individual applications of this technology. In the Hoban and Kendall study, over 60% felt that use of biotechnology to make cotton plants resistant to damage from weed control chemicals was acceptable. This application of biotechnology is more acceptable than the general public response to crossbreeding.
