Recommendations will vary a little depending on whether these are pet birds or you want to setup multiple pairs for breeding. For pet birds, choose a place where the family spends time. You want to enjoy the birds, so put them where you can see and hear them. They can be a little messy so dont put them above your kitchen counter. Seeds and seed husks will be falling onto the counter. Select a place that get a lot of light. Direct sunlight is ok, but you must be careful. They need to be able to get out of the direct sunlight which could get very hot. Zebras basically need the same temperature as we people do. If you have small children, the cage needs to be out of reach. The same goes for other pets that cannot control the temptation. Most other pets can be trained to leave the birds alone. You will need to simply be watchful of the situation and deal with it. Do not place the cage where it will get a draft. In cold climates a draft can be cold and very uncomfortable. Remember, the birds are stuck in that cage. They can not go to a different room to find comfort. Air conditioning can also create an uncomfortable draft.

Woodstork The coast between Charleston and St. Marys is on the Atlantic flyway, enhancing the region as an destination for bird-watching. Nine national wildlife refuges and several state-owned sanctuaries ensure large, undisturbed habitats for birds and animals. Many are open to the public. Low Country birders have recorded bald eagles, peregine falcons, snowy egrets, cattle egrets, tri-colored (Louisiana) herons, wood storks, night herons, little blue herons and many other species. American alligators, loggerhead turtles and manatee are also present. Mammals include deer, feral hogs, raccoon, mink and otter. The cooler months are the best times to do most outdoor activities in South Carolina and Georgia, and bird- and wildlife watching is no exception. October through April are the best birding months. If you're looking for alligators and other reptiles, March through October is prime time. The hotter months are also best if you want to see flowers in bloom, trees in full leaf and Spanish moss at its thickest.

Extractions: Wooster, OH O ur 5th grade class at Chester Elementary School decided to conduct a research experiment in our Land Lab. We wanted to know which species of birds prefered eating on the ground, and which species of birds prefered eating on a hanging feeder or on a platform feeder. The Land Lab is one-quarter of an acre wide. Our Land Lab is full of deciduous and coniferous trees. We also have a pond, which is about 160 square feet. The pond has a dogwood tree beside it. Our Land Lab also has crabapple, hawthorn, serviceberry, and red berry trees. We also have two raised beds, which include shrubs and perennials. Hypothesis We predicted that just as many birds would come to the feeders as the ground. Birds like the Dark-eyed Junco will mainly eat on the ground. Birds like the Blue Jay will eat on the feeders. We thought that the American Goldfinch and the Black-capped Chickadee would eat on both the feeders and the ground. Results and Analysis In our experiment more birds ate on the ground (under the feeders) than on the feeders (Figure 1). Two species, Downy Woodpecker and American Tree Sparrow, ate only on the feeders and two species, Mourning Dove and American Robin, ate only from the ground. Most bird species ate both on the ground and from feeders, but more birds of most species ate from the ground. The Common Grackle and the European Starling ate a lot more on the ground than on a feeder. The Black-capped Chickadee and the House Finch ate mostly on the feeders.

Extractions: Bloomsburg, PA Introduction Our experiment looked at the question of whether birds prefer to eat food on the ground or in a feeder. We decided to observe Dark-eyed Juncos, House Finches, and Tufted Titmice to see which birds would prefer to eat at which places. Hypothesis For our hypothesis, we predicted that the majority of the three species would like to eat off the ground. We thought that Dark-eyed Juncos and House Finches would prefer to eat off the ground, while Tufted Titmice would prefer to eat from the feeder. Materials and Methods Our data were collected over a period of six days in the last week of January. Each of the six days, we watched the feeder for about two hours during the afternoon. We recorded which birds ate off the ground and which birds ate at the feeder. Our birds were identified with a field guide. The type of food we used was a mix of cracked corn and sunflower seeds. We laid the food out evenly in the feeder and below it on the ground. The feeder is located in the middle of our large backyard, and was away from all trees. We put out our old Christmas tree near the feeder, which drew in more birds because of its shelter.

Chambers County View the Checklist To reach the refuge from Houston take IH-10 east 45 miles to the SH61 exit at Hankamer. Go south on SH61 four miles to SH65. At SH65 continue straight onto FM 562. Go eight miles to FM 1985 and turn left. Go about 3 miles to the refuge entrance on the right. From High Island take SH 124 north about five miles to FM 1985. Turn left and go about six miles to the refuge entrance on the left. From Beaumont take IH 10 west to Winnie. In Winnie take SH 124 south 10 miles to FM 1985. Turn west (right) on FM 1985. Go about six miles to the refuge entrance on the left.
