Dr. Crum acquired the materials over the course of his career as a professor of Biblical literature who had interests in black history, psychology, race relations, and recent Methodist church history. His major area of research was the Gullah communities of Edisto and St. Helena, two of the South Carolina Sea Islands, with the bulk of work here dating from the 1930s; the result of the research was "Gullah," published by Duke University Press in 1940. Other areas of interest were moral education, pastoral counseling, and religious pagentry. The following titles relate powerful stories about slaves who struggled to gain control over oppressive circumstances even as they struggled to find freedom. FREEDOM'S FRUIT Well suited to younger readers, this "conjure tale" is the story of Mama Marina, a slave who wins her daughter's freedom from slavery by putting a spell on Master Alston's grapes. Extractions: Research is the central component of all the departments activities. All members of staff are actively engaged in research projects of their own, ranging from the study of the ancient Black Sea to moral concepts in Latin literature, from Greek inscriptions to ancient ideas of character, embracing food, sex, politics and religion on the way. Two members of the staff currently hold 3-year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowships, and the department aims to secure research leave for two other staff members each year. In addition to maximizing the amount of time that staff can devote to research, the department also provides a forum for discussion of work in progress, the weekly seminar to which all members contribute papers on a regular basis. A significant proportion of research is now focused on the area of later Greek culture, and the department has created a Centre for the Study of Hellenistic and Romano-Greek Culture as a focus for this activity. Major funding applications have been submitted from the Centre to the AHRB for projects on Ancient Monotheism, on the World of Knowledge in the Second Century AD, and on the Black Sea in Antiquity.
