Extractions: New U.S. Coast Guard Official Reaches Out to Paddlers By Jeff Yeager, Executive Director, American Canoe Association In the past, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) has been viewed by some paddlers as a detached government agency, accused of showing little concern for boating issues affecting paddlers and other non-motorized boaters. The American Canoe Association (ACA) has always known another side of the USCG, one backed by hard-working boating safety professionals, who, if guilty of anything, were guilty of trying to please all of the people all of the time. But regardless of past impressions, it's clear that a new attempt at even greater cooperation with non-motorized boaters is now underway in the USCG. Captain Michael F. Holmes, the newly appointed Chief of the USCG's Office of Boating Safety, scheduled a meeting with staff at the ACA national office outside of Washington only three weeks after assuming his new post. Later, ACA's Director of Safety, Education and Instruction, Wing Watson, sat down for an interview with Captain Holmes to give him a chance to speak directly to paddlers across the country. ACA: Many paddlers probably aren't familiar with the USCG's Office of Boating Safety. Can you tell us a little about the Office and its purpose?
