History Of Bowling The sport of tenpin bowling has a long and fascinating history. bowlingwas an Exhibition Sport in the 1988 Seoul olympic Games. http://carahoneychurch.com/history_of_bowling.htm
Extractions: The sport of tenpin bowling has a long and fascinating history. Archaeological evidence points to bowling's existence for around 7,000 years with the discovery in an Egyptian child's grave of bowling balls, pins and other implements for playing a game decidedly similar to our modern tenpins. The date of this child's burial has been placed at 5,200 BC. Another ancient discovery was the Polynesian game of ula maika, which also used pins and balls of stone. The stones were rolled at targets 60 feet away, a distance which is still one of the basic requirements in tenpin bowling. Records in Sydney's Mitchell Library show that the game of tenpin bowling commenced in Australia in 1885 at the Washington Bowling Saloon in Ballarat, Victoria. The game spread throughout Australia with manually operated centres in many major population areas. With the advent of automatic pinsetting machinery the popularity of the game exploded. The first fully automatic centre opened in Hurstville, Sydney in 1960.
