Mr. Rubens-Alcais retired as the President following the 12th Congress held at Brussels in 1953 and was replaced by Mr. Oscar Ryden of Sweden. Mr. Rubens-Alcais passed away on the 8th of March, 1963 and was buried in the cemetry of Ivry, near Paris. On the 15th of June, 1955, the International Olympic Committee announced its unanimous recognition of the CISS as an "International Federation with Olympic standing." Following this recognition, the CISS agreed at the 14th Congress in Milan in 1957 to amend its statues in accordance with the Olympic spirit. This meant that the word "Olympic" and five ring emblems shall not be used by the CISS. At the same Congress, Argentina, German Democratic Republic, Chile, Greece, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Uruguay and the U.S.S.R., were welcomed as new members, bringing the total membership to 32 nations. Canada was accepted as a new member at the next Congress, the 15th at Montana-Vermala during the 4th Winter Games.

Extractions: Freshman Girls Physical Education Classes Mrs. Hodges Hundreds of years ago, around 1046, England was conquered by Denmark and occupied by the Danish. The English finally forced them out after many bloody battles. A few years later, an English boy was walking through an old battleground. He uncovered a Danish skull left over from England's war with Denmark and started kicking it around. A couple other boys joined him. But some of them hurt their feet on the skull, so they decided to use an inflated cow bladder. Other sources show that it led to soccer and rugby. In 1146, grown men were playing football. Sometimes there were more than one hundred players on the same team. Instead of helmets players grew their hair longer to protect their skulls from severe injuries. Rugby, starting as a part of football, was developed by William Webb Ellias in 1823 in college. Players were ordered not to play in town but in vacant fields because the sport was so violent. They established some rules and they agreed that both teams should have the same number of players, though usually the teams still had more than fifty players on a team.

Extractions: Notes Before the era of teenage swimming stars, Randwick boasted two of the world's top swimmers, both women. Neither had been able to realize her potential until the momentous decision to allow female competition in swimming events at Olympic standard in 1912. Olympic swimmers Mina Wylie (second from right) and fanny Durack (second from left). Sarah 'Fanny' Durack, 23, and Wilhemina 'Mina' Wylie, 21, went off to do battle, backed by times of 1 minute 25 seconds for the 100 metres. Fanny broke the record in her heat, setting a new world record time of 1 minute 19.8 seconds. The two girls 'crawled' their way to gold and silver for Australia in the final, Fanny winning by four lengths, despite running into the side of the pool. Although the First World War removed the immediate possibility of another Olympics, both continued swimming and breaking records, from the 100 metres to the mile, with Fanny always just in front. An American tour was arranged in 1919 to settle informally the issue of the fastest female swimmer. In an atmosphere befitting a modern Wimbledon final, the tour deteriorated into disputes and flares of temper. After challenges to the legitimacy of the swimmers' amateur status, the conflict climaxed in Fanny's refusal to swim at a meet in Philadelphia. They returned home in the midst of the furore and began preparations for the 1920 Olympics.
