Salvador is the capital of Bahia, the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, home of such Brazilian musical groups as Olodum and Ilê Aiyê and the birthplace of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, among many other artists. Salvador has the largest street carnival in Brazil. Large sound trucks ("Trio Elétrico") playing Axé and pagode (two Brazilian styles of music) proceed through the streets, each followed by a huge number of people dancing and partying from mid-afternoon late into the night. Salvador has approximately 2.25 million inhabitants. The city has beaches that you can enjoy all year around, spicy food that is still called by its African names (Carurú, Vatapá, Acarajé, etc.). Salvador is the city of the ceremonies of the Candomblé (Yoruban) religion which combines African and Catholic (syncretic) symbolism. In Salvador, you will meet and see people of all ages practicing Capoeira, a mixture of dance and martial art, and dancing to Axé music. Extractions: Classes are held in the neighborhood of Salvador called Barra (pronounced "Baha"), a centrally located neighborhood lined with beaches and with all the facilities you might need (e.g., restaurants, bars, banks, shopping, laundry, hospital, travel agencies and hotels.. That's the lighthouse of Barra pictured below. I offer classes for individuals, couples or groups of three, for any level of Brazilian Portuguese. Because each student has a different way of learning, I adapt my teaching to the student's needs. Classes are structured around everyday Portuguese usage (drawing from the popular media) so you won't end up speaking Portuguese like a textbook. Also my classes have an informal atmosphere in which I keep the student engaged at every moment, writing, speaking and thinking in Portuguese. Survival. Fast food and music are becoming part of Brazilians' lives. I don't think that this inflluence is really bad, and I'm sure it is not such a big influence; a hamburger could never be more important than our Brazilian rice and beans . If that ever happened, I would really be worried. Nowadays we are learning to appreciate our traditional food such as our traditional cheese bread . We are also making good films which are being watched in the whole world, such as Central Station Also, Brazilian musicians are selling more CDs than most American music groups. I think that we are accepting aspects of American culture, but we still love our own culture and we are preserving it.

My father, who had leftist orientated ideas, used to say that all kinds of American cultural icons were distasteful. When I was a child, it was forbidden to drink coke and to chew chewing gum in my house. Both actions were representative of the American dominance to my father, Incongruently, he had an American Ford car. My father died 32 years ago, and I wonder how he would feel seeing his daughter politically centered, a diet coke addict, sometimes chewing Wrigley's juicy fruit gum, and living in the United States. He didn't live long enough to see this and the spread of American culture in the last decades. He would probably be convinced that American pop culture was swamping Brazil. I think it is difficult to curb American cultural hegemony. Many years ago, there was an attempt to reduce the number of American films in Brazil. The government imposed a law that all cinemas should show a higher percentage of Brazilian movies. However, we didn't have enough good films, or even enough films, to show. So, in spite of government subsidies, this measure failed soon after.

Carnival celebrations kicked off today, Friday, just five days after 20,000 inmates seized 29 jails in Brazil's largest-ever prison revolt. But way before this week's rebellion, the men and women who create Carnival themes had already decided on an anti-violence theme. More than half of the top 14 samba schools will feature peace and violence in their lyrics and on their floats, giving the pageant of 2001 the unofficial title of Carnival of Peace. "We are transforming Carnival into a kind of protest," said Joaosinho Trinta, the famed artistic director of Grande Rio school. "In this time of violence and corruption ... a Carnival of Peace is being born out of necessity."

Extractions: Judith Dixon Music is a universal language. It crosses cultural and ethnic backgrounds. People relate to music through expressive and receptive communication. Music is the heart of Brazil. From a simple family gathering to carnaval. Music is the foundation for many of their festivities. In many religious ceremonies the music is one of the main focal points. Brazilian music as well as music in general is soothing, healing, inspiring, and energizing. Music influences Brazilian life a great deal. We will investigate the history of music in Brazil as well as making discoveries of the different sounds and styles of music. Well learn about cultural events and how the music is depicted culturally. In collaboration with team members we will investigate a variety of experiments to incorporate the science of sound for a science fair project. Utilizing our music teacher instruments will be made and students taught how to play them. Before each section is introduced the students will know what will be covered in the lesson. Information should be posted on blackboard or poster board. An oral discussion of information is shared by teacher. Questions asked orally (inferential) and in written form. Quizzes and tests will be teacher made. The types of tests will be objective, matching or multiple choice.

Extractions: One of our most important undertakings has always been research. The objective being to distinguish the special characteristics of the numerous existing artistic groups and each folk performance, to prepare them for the professional market without compromising tradition. Among other things, we have organized expositions and have produced videos, a book and various well known CD's of cultural manifestations, groups and traditional artists. One of the releases is a compilation of Maracatu, which is a very important form of Brazilian folk music and performance, which has never been published in this format. In the year 2000, África Produções Brazilian Culture took a Maracatu group to Europe. We took part in the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, Germany, representing the American continent in the opening ceremonies, and went on to tour various other countries. Our presentations reverberated in the international media. In 2002 we will top this by publishing the project "Maracatus de Pernambuco - Brazil" in Europe. Audiences will get the unique opportunity to get to know the symbolism, the mysteries and the history behind one of the most beautiful and characteristic Brazilian folk traditions.

Over beers quite a few, as I recall at a philosophy conference in Germany, a professor from the Federal University of Bahia by the name of Jose Cristosomo de Souza issued an open invitation to his fellow philosopher/beer-drinkers to visit him in Brazil. A year later, in the depths of a Minnesota winter, the offhand invitation started to seem like a very good idea. With a friend in tow, I was on my way. Frequent-flyer miles got us as far as Sao Paulo, and from there it was a quick hop to Salvador de Bahia, where Jose picked us up at the airport.
