Many of the aquatic birds, especially in the heron/egret order (Ciconiiformes) undergo startling color changes as breeding season approaches. There are rookeries of many species around the edges of the flow-way, and some great blue herons were on nests as early as January. Others begin later. But in most species, breeding is not only accompanied by changes in plumage, but by the development of often brilliant colors on exposed areas of skin, especially on the legs and around the eyes and bill. This is a cattle egret in breeding plumage. The buffy feathers on the head, chest and back are only present in the spring, and the bright violet skin around the eyes and base of the bill is a striking change. Below are two shots of another common bird, the anhinga. On the left is a typical looking bird in a typical looking posture. On the right is a female in breeding plumage - the bright blue-green around her eyes is only present for a fairly brief period, but is amazing when seen well. White ibis are spectacular in all seasons, but as breeding season nears the reds of their beak, the hues of their head and feet become incredibly vivid and saturated. The birds below were shot as they jousted for position on what was obviously a preferred perch.

In 1998 and 1999 the Biological Station of the City of Linz had a WebCam depicting different species of breeding birds in the capital city of the Austrian province of Upper Austria. The Jackdaw project, which ran in 1999, can be viewed here . There were two live video cameras in addition to the WebCam. The Kestrel project, which ran in 1998, can still be viewed here . You can see pictures, information and animations of the breeding. As far as we know, these are the only projects of their kind to be carried out using Eurasian Jackdaws ( Corvus monedula ) and Eurasian Kestrels ( Falco tinnunculus ).     Extractions: During the years 1981 through 1986, the State of New York was surveyed for breeding bird species. The entire state of New York was divided into about 1300 squares, 10 x 10 km. in area, each further subdivided into four 5km blocks. Each block was surveyed for breeding species. This was the first breeding bird survey in New York history. The results were published in a book, The Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State Here in Otselic, our natural habitats are intact and available for birdlife. It is the diversity of habitats that attracts the great numbers of nesting birds here every Spring. The following list of birds were proven to breed at least once in Otselic since 1980. Breeding behavior was observed during breeding season for each species in proper breeding habitat.
