Extractions: in the Islamic World Welcome to the Media, Culture and Society in the Islamic World homepage. This site is a course project by the students of a joint graduate/undergraduate summer course at the American University in Cairo. The course Media, Culture and Society in the Islamic World is aimed at giving students tools for the analysis of media representation that links these representations to the wider social and cultural milieus in which they are produced and consumed. It focuses on representations of the Islamic world, both those produced by others and those in which media producers in Muslim communities represent themselves. The class discusses semiotics and text analysis but seeks to go beyond this to look at the place of media in everyday life. Media texts are nodes of discourses, but they are also commodities, symbolic reservoirs, objects of ritual behaviors, myths, performances, and foci of social interaction, among other things. This class invites students to ask questions about the nature of social and cultural boundaries, the political economy of communication and the kinds of tools social scientists need to analyze and interpret such issues.

Pacific News Member of Brunei Culture Bruneians are predominantly Malay, and customs, beliefs and pastimes are very similar to those of Peninsular Malaysia. Adat , or customary law, governs many of the country's ceremonies; there is even a government department responsible for preserving ceremony and advising on protocol, dress and heraldry. Brunei is a fairly strict Muslim country and a Ministry of Religious Affairs fosters and promotes Islam. The constitution does, however, allow for other religions to be practised. The official language is Malay, but English is widely spoken. Jawi , Malay written in Arabic script, is taught in schools, and most signs in the country are written both in Jawi and Roman script. During the height of the Brunei sultanates, brass and silver artisans produced finely designed brass gongs, cannons and household vessels. They were often embossed with designs of serpents and animals or verses from the Koran. Many crafts failed to survive the decline of the sultanate, but silverwork and weaving are two traditional crafts that have been preserved. For questions and remarks, please contact

Canada International Pantomima's public performances, school performances and drama workshops turned out to be very popular locally, as Brunei sees very little outside cultural entertainment, particularly from Western countries. They made a major impact on local audiences during course of their visit, and left very positive impressions of Canada and Canadian children's theatre. Pantomima also generated considerable media interest; a large number of articles about their visit appeared in the local Malay, Chinese and English dailies, and the group was also featured on two national television newscasts. His Royal Highness Prince Mateem, youngest son of the Sultan of Brunei, attended the public performance in Bandar as Guest of Honour. Prince Mateem has now attended several Canadian cultural events. The Pantomima visit assisted our ongoing efforts to introduce Canada, its people and its culture to Brunei, and to highlight the quality of our cultural performers. Hopefully, over time this will help to generate more interest in Canada as a tourist, and trade/investment destination, and encourage young Brunei citizens- and their parents- to consider studying in Canada in the future.

Formal education began in Brunei in 1912 with the opening of a Malay vernacular school in Brunei Town (now known as Bandar Seri Begawan). By 1918, similar schools had been opened in Muara, Belait and Tutong. Education in these early vernacular schools was limited. It was conducted in Malay for boys aged between seven and fourteen years and the curriculum included Reading and Writing (in both Arabic and Romanised script), Composition, Arithmetic, Geography, History, Hygiene, Drawing and Physical Education. Gardening and Basketry were later introduced at some schools. The Chinese community established their own school in 1916 and the first non-government English medium primary school was established in Seria in 1931. In order to encourage parents to send their children to school, limited compulsory attendance was introduced in 1929. The Brunei Town area was the only location immediately affected.

The IT competition for national schools organised by the Ministry of Education in cooperation with University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and some private rganisations such as BSP started in 1996 and has been held annually since then. The Guest of Honour for this year's Inforama was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Hussain bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Mohamed Yusof. In his speech, the Minister noted the role of computer technology in our everyday life. He said, in my opinion, our perception regarding the computer or Internet needs to be changed in parallel with the demands for technological comfort in our lives. We no longer question the advantages and disadvantages of technology instead we find ways to benefit our lives. It has been proven that the Internet has accelerated the delivery of tasks very efficiently, and its potential to speed-up and ease other facets of life is widely open indeed. Our wisdom will decide how we can exploit this potential for the benefit of our lives.

They are relatively strict in terms of religion and the ministry has special officers to investigate any breach of Islamic law by Muslims. Khalwat is one crime that these officers are keeping a sharp eye on. Khalwat is when unmarried couples stand or sit too close to each other after dark. Getting arrested for this crime can mean imprisonment and a fine. Sale of alcohol is banned. Non-Islamic restaurants (such as Chinese places) that serve pork must display signs stating that they are not suitable for Muslims' consumption.
