Excerpt: The Bahamas are a group of about 700 atolls and cays in the western Atlantic Ocean, of which only between 30 and 40 are inhabited. The largest of the islands is Andros Island, located 120 miles (190 km) southeast of Florida. The Bimini islands are to its northwest. To the North is the island of Grand Bahama, home to the second largest city in the country, Freeport. The island of Great Abaco is to its east. In the far south is the island of Great Inagua, the second largest island in the country. Other notable islands include Eleuthera, Cat Island, San Salvador Island, Acklins, Crooked Island, and Mayaguana. Nassau is the capital and largest city, located on New Providence. The islands have a subtropical climate, moderated by the Gulf Stream. The islands are surface projections of the three oceanic Bahama Banks, the Little Bahama Bank, the Great Bahama Bank and the westernmost Cay Sal Bank. The highest point is only seventy meters above sea level on Long Island; the island of New Providence, where the capital city of Nassau is located, reaches a maximum elevation of only thirty-seven meters. The land on the Bahamas has a foundation of fossil coral, but much of the rock is oolitic limestone; the stone is derived from the disintegration of coral reefs and seashells. The land is primarily either rocky or mangrove swamp. Low scrub covers much of the surface area. Pineyards are found on four of the northern islands: Grand Bahama, Great Abaco, New Providence, and Andros. On some of the southern islands, low-growing tropical hardwood flourishes. Although some soil is very fertile, it is also very thin. Only ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=67551 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of 3rd edition of GRAND BAHAMA
Grand Bahama by Peter Barratt
Published by I M Publishing, 190 pages, color and b&w illustrations.

This is a book about Grand Bahama that faithfully records the history of the Island from the period before Columbus right up to the present day. Comprehensive and well-written here is what `Island Magazine' wrote about the book:

The tapestry of Grand Bahama's rich history is woven from colourful threads of time that include native Lucayans, early Spanish and English explorers, sunken ships, bootlegging, industrial magnates, the birth of tourism, challenges and opportunities of a new nation, as well as the geology and natural beauty of this 'island of the great shallows'. Weaving these threads together in a fascinating and informative book is author Peter Barratt, a town planner and architect formerly in charge of the development of Freeport, now the second city of The Bahamas.

This new and completely revised third edition covers all aspects of Grand Bahama and well documents the modern-day spectacular development of the island from a sleepy, barren, pine-covered out island into a vibrant resort paradise, a tranquil haven of unspoiled beauty for second homes and state-of-the-art air/sea business hub. With stories, historical photographs, GRAND BAHAMA is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand both the island's amazing past as well as its incredibly exciting future.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Bahama," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Bahama in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Bahama when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Bahama, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! New Providence is the most populated island in the Bahamas. The original attraction of New Providence was that it had one of the best sheltered natural small vessel harbors in the Caribbean. Because New Providence's harbor was close to the Florida Strait, it became a nest for pirates preying on mainly Spanish shipping returning to Spain with gold, silver, and other wealth. The apex of pirate activity there was from 1715 to 1725, after which the British government established a formal colony and military headquarters centered on the small city of Nassau fronting the harbor. ... The city has a population of 260,000 (2008 census), nearly 80 percent of the entire population of The Bahamas (330,000). The city is located on the island of New Providence, which functions much like a federal district. While there is no local government, it is governed directly as an administrative division of the national government. Nassau is considered a historical stronghold of pirates. ... Read more
