Excerpt: Vilnija is a Lithuanian organization The organization was formed in 1988, in the LSSR, by Lithuanian nationalists and communists and its primary aim was the Lithuanization of ethnic Poles living in the Eastern part of Lithuania. The organization is mostly composed of ethnic Lithuanians although it was later joined by a marginal Polish organization, the Association of St. Zita (Stowarzyszenie w. Zyty) . The organization was created by Romualdas Ozolas and has been led for many years by Kazimieras Garva. Its program, elaborated in a monograph by Garva, is based on their belief that the Polish minority in Lithuania are in fact Polonized Lithuanians and that their true identity had been erased by years of foreign occupation. To counter such situation, the organization proposed that they should be brought back to their Lithuanian roots by removing any trace of alien (that is, Polish or Russian) textbooks, teachers, symbols and traditions . The organization's goal is also to counter perceived growing Polish influence in Lithuania, which Vilnija sees as a threat to that nation. The organization is known for controversial actions and statements. In June 1999, it signed a petition defending Aleksandras Lileikis, the former head of Vilnius branch of Lithuanian Security Police (a Lithuanian Nazi-sponsored collaborationist police force that operated from 1941 to 1944), accused of extermination of Jews and collaboration with the...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8907919 ... Product Description
After the successful edition of the book on the voyages by the Norwegian Ohthere, Ohthere's Voyages, the Viking Ship Museum now presents the lesser-known travelogue which accompanies Ohthere's report in the Old English version of Orosius' world history. The narrative begins with these words: "Wulfstan said that he travelled from the Heaths, that he was in Truso in seven days and nights, that the boat was all the way running under sail" Wulfstan's account covers a voyage from the root of Jutland to the Vistula Delta - connecting the trading centres of Hedeby and Truso - and provides a rare and vivid view of the south-eastern Baltic Sea region in the early Viking Age, including aspects of inland navigation and local culture. In the new volume, thirty scholars from seven countries interpret the original source and present its geographical, cultural, nautical and economic context in the light of recent investigations. In order to gain a better understanding of Wulfstan's navigational account, the Viking Ship Museum contributed with a trial voyage from Hedeby to Gda?sk with the Skuldelev 1-reconstruction Ottar af Roskilde. Manned by a group of volunteers, this cargo vessel managed to cover the distance faster than Wulfstan did in his time. ... Read more

Product Description
From the Baltic to the Black Sea offers a rare insight into the closed world of medieval Eastern Europe and opens up a neglected archaeological tradition to English-speaking readers. Selections focus on early European ethnic formations and states, the demography of medieval populations, and the nature of rural settlement and urban development. The book challenges the intellectual assumptions of medieval archaeology, and questions its relationship to history and prehistory. It exposes the limitations of a strictly empirical approach to studying the period when written history began and the early medieval states emerged. ... Read more

Product Description
Novgorod was a major medieval city and an important centre for trade routes between northern, central and western Europe and the Near East, and has been the subject of intensive investigation since the 1930s. This volume in a series devoted to the archaeology of medieval Novgorod, presents eleven studies of ceramic evidence in terms of chronology and technology, methodology of investigation, and international trade and contacts. The essays also reflect different approaches to studying ceramics by western and Russian scholars. Some of the subjects explored include hand-made and early wheel-turned pottery from the environs of Novgorod, Novgorod pottery from the 10th to 15th century, handling large urban pottery assemblages, pottery imported from the west and the east, amphorae from Novgorod and the wine trade. ... Product Description
This is a themed volume of 28 papers, written in honour of Marion Archibald. It considers the role of coinage in northern Europe from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the early thirteenth century. Although the focus of the volume is the coinage itself, the majority of the papers consider coinage in its historical and/or archaeological context.

A recurrent theme of the volume is the movement of coinage across the English Channel and the North Sea and beyond. Particular areas of focus include the importation and use of money in early Anglo-Saxon England; movement, hoarding and secondary treatment of coinage during the Viking Age; and monetary contacts between England and her neighbours under the Normans and Angevins.

The papers in this book provide an important range of perspectives in current numismatic research, and will provide a valuable resource for scholars in a variety of disciplines with interests in the economy and society in northern Europe, c. 500-1250. ... Read more

Product Description
Excavations at the site of Baltic House uncovered evidence of occupation dating from Roman times onward. The earliest excavated feature was a Roman barrel-lined well dated AD 50-80 and containing the skulls of a horse and bull - perhaps a sacrificial offering. The well lay to the south of a large V-shaped ditch which formed part of a late 1st-century defensive boundary along the northeast side of the Roman settlement. A 2nd-century cellared building was also recorded here. In the medieval period the site lay in an area surrounded by a religious houses. The earliest medieval finds dated from the 10th or 11th century. Industrial activity between the 13th and 15th centuries included metalworking, represented by the manufacture of bells and kitchen vessels, and nitric acid distillation. In the 18th century the area was redeveloped with the creation of Jeffrey Square and smart terraced houses. At the end of the 19th century the Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange was constructed. The building was badly damaged by a terrorist bomb in 1992, and the site is now occupied by the London headquarters of Swiss Re, a striking new office tower designed by Foster and Partners. This publication summarizes the archaeological sequence and history of one of London's most fascinating sites in a fully illustrated and integrated text. ... Read more

Product Description
In the 18th century, large parts of Eurasia became part of the Mongol Empire; it is the north-western region, known as the Golden Horde, which forms the focus of this study. Although no work has been carried out at the city of Ukek, lying in the Golden Horde, for more than eighty years there is much unpublished data from the site and its agrarian periphery. This volume presents and examines written, numismatic and material cultural evidence as well as data on sites and settlements, cemeteries and hoards. Although this is not the easiest report to read and understand, it includes a good deal of unpublished material from an area that has not been widely studied. ... Read more

Product Description

Illyria is the name given to the ancient region of the Balkans on the Adriatic coast from which most historians of the Balkans believe modern Albanians descend. This illuminating work by the celebrated archaeologist, Arthur Evans, examines the lives of the ancient Illyrians and contains many penetrating insights into the region. Drawing on his extensive travels in the area in the 1880s, Ancient Illyria presents for the first time Evans' original analysis of the diverse archaeological sites of the region to construct a full and fascinating history. Never before published as a single volume, this classic work is still the best account and contains the most detailed research into the subject. Fully illustrated and including pictures of some Roman inscriptions which were later destroyed during the Serbian occupation of Kosovo, this invaluable guide to the archaeology and history of ancient Illyria is an essential text for all historians and everyone interested in the Balkans.
