Excerpt: Over the years, red has been the key trim color in the Reds' on-field ensembles. However, there have been some significant deviations from this standard, as reflected by the club's recent (but now past) uniforms, which featured black as a major trim style. The growth of McCarthyism and the advent of a new Red Scare in the 1950s gave the Reds' owners concerns that the club's traditional nickname would be seen as an association with Communism. The name of the team was officially changed to the Cincinnati Redlegs and the new 1956 uniforms wiped out the REDS lettering from inside the C-REDS logo, leaving a plain wishbone C in red. The color red however, was restored to its place of pride as the sole trim color, completely eliminating the navy blue that had been used as a secondary trim color since 1935. The other groundbreaking feature of the 1956 uniforms was the use of sleeveless jerseys, seen only once before in the Major Leagues (the 1940-1942 uniforms of the Chicago Cubs). At home and away, the cap was all-red with a white wishbone C insignia. The long-sleeved undershirts were red. The uniform was plain white with a red wishbone C logo on the left and the uniform number on the right. On the road the wishbone C was replaced by the moustachioed "Mr. Red" logo, the pillbox-hat-wearing man with a baseball for a head. The home stockings were red with six white stripes. The away stockings had only three white stripes. In 1957, the red caps were changed for ones whose crowns matched the white or gray o...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22071043 ... Read more

Excerpt: Dodger Stadium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In the mid-1950s, Brooklyn Dodger team president Walter O'Malley had tried to build his own stadium in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, but was unable to reach an agreement with city officials in regards to land acquisition and eventually reached a deal with the city of Los Angeles in California. The land for Dodger Stadium was purchased from local owners and inhabitants in the early 1950s by the city of Los Angeles using eminent domain with funds from the Federal Housing Act of 1949. The city had planned to develop the Elysian Park Heights public housing project, which included two dozen 13-story buildings and more than 160 two-story townhouses, in addition to newly rebuilt playgrounds and schools. Before construction could begin, the local political climate changed greatly when Norris Poulson was elected mayor of Los Angeles in 1953. Proposed public housing projects like Elysian Park Heights lost most of their support as they became associated with socialist ideals. Following protracted negotiations, the city was able to purchase the Chávez Ravine property back from the Federal Housing Authority at a drastically reduced price, with the stipulation that the land be used for a public purpose. It was not until June 3, 1958, when Los Angeles voters approved a "Taxpayers Committee for Yes on Baseball" referendum, that the Dodgers were able to acquire 352 acres (1.42 km) of Chavez Ravine from the city. While Dodger Stadium was under construction, the Dodgers played in the league's largest capacity venue from 1958 through 1961 at their temporary home, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which could seat in excess of 80,000 people. Product Description
The Funniest People in Sports: 250 Anecdotes About Sports contains such anecdotes as the following:

Umpire Beans Reardon once made a mistake. Richie Ashburn slid into second base and Billy Cox attempted to tag him. Beans yelled “Safe”, but at the same time he flung his arm in the “Out” gesture. Mr. Ashburn asked, “What the hell does that mean?” Mr. Reardon replied, “Richie, you know you’re safe. Billy, you know he’s safe. But 30,000 fans see my arm. Richie, you’re out.”

Figure skater Rosalynn Sumners has a tendency to put on weight. When she was skating for Disney, her contract required her to be weighed each week, and if she was three pounds over her desired weight, Disney fined her $10. After a while, Ms. Sumners began to stand on the scales each week with a $10 bill in her hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book for the Martial Arts Scholar of Ancient Western Warriors
After writing my book I became interested in how close my work was to the training of atheletes in the Greek sport of Pankration.Professor Andreas Georgiou has written a consise and informative book that is a scholarly introduction to the historical birth and evolution of Pankration. This book is for a reader who appreciates well-researched material who wants to further a specialized knowledge of early-Western Civilization or a well-versed Martial Scientist.

If you are a student of Martial Science and its development this book, even in its first volume is a must-seek.If you wanted to know if there is any existing information that challenges the idea that sophistocated Martial Art systems may not have begun in Asia then this book is a must-see.If you are a trainer who wishes to compare your training regimin to the ancient ones used by ancient youth and adult Pankration Instructors this book is a must- have.If you are a Martial Arts author who wishes to integrate traditional Asian Martial Arts systems with modern, Western, systems of sport-combat this book and its continuing volumes is a potential treasure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat limited
I purchased the book while looking for a 'basics' book that could be shared with newer players, to provide a fundamental understanding of the principles of game.Perhaps, I expected too much. This book devotes 32 pages to 'softball biographies' and only 18 to 'playing softball'.Yes, it adds 12 pages devoted to 'getting started', but allocates 8 more to 'ASA programs' and 15 more to 'softball and the Olympics'.I enjoyed reading it myself, but it doesn't have a great deal of substance about the game, ... Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Guam has some of the best dive sites in the world since there has been minimal tourist impact compared to other better known dive locations. Piti Bomb Holes has been built up as a tourist attraction allowing tourists to descend into an observatory where they can take in the beauty that has grown in a sinkhole. (The name "Bomb Holes" is a misnomer.) Divers may dive around this attraction and feed shoals of fish for the amusement of the tourists inside the subaquatic observatory as much as for the divers' own amusement. While many of the dive sites can be reached by land, some of these entry points require a long walk over coral or a long surface swim. Also, because so much of the island is controlled by U.S. military bases, many of the dive sites are accessed by land through the military bases. The list below are some of the dive sites in Guam. Gun Beach is remarkable for several reasons. First and foremost, it is perhaps the only SCUBA dive site in Tumon Bay, the main resort hotel / tourism area, comparable to Hawaii's Waikiki Beach. Most other sites, with the exception of the sewage treatment plant, are at least a 30 minute drive from this hotel district. This divesite is at the extreme right-hand side of Tumon Bay, past the last hotel, and down a short dirt road. There are no facilities at the site, although it is within a 5-minute walk of the nearest hotel. Note that there is NO protected area of the shallows which are sufficiently deep to conduct the shallow-water dive lesson commonly given in "intro diving" (no-license diving, preceded by a 30-minut...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2253752 ...
