3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Global Basketry Traditions
I bought this book, thinking that it would provide a guide to various basket-making traditions and also that it would provide details of the relevant techniques.

It's a beautiful and inspiring book, however, because of the breadth of material covered, there is very little detail provided on any particular tradition and next to nothing about the techniques used.

The book inspired me to go and look for other books on specific techniques, but, in retrospect, I probably wouldn't buy it again. ... Read more

Product Description
California Indian baskets are considered by many to be among the world's most beautiful, sophisticated, and cherished art objects. This full-color book brings together 62 of the finest baskets ever created, each carefully chosen for their aesthetic value from museums and private collections all over the United States, including the Field Museum in Chicago, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's Peabody Museum.

Even baskets of everyday use, such as cooking baskets and seedbeaters, exhibit an astoundingly sophisticated level of design, while specially made gift baskets adorned with bird feathers and beads are objects of pure exuberance. Some of them are over 150 years old, while others were made within the last few years.

Color photographs of each basket are accompanied by insightful commentary not only from art historians and knowledgeable academic scholars, but also from prominent native weavers and California Indian artists in other media. Their eye for native aesthetics shows us how to look at the baskets in a new and exciting way.

This strong combination of visual beauty and knowledgeable insight makes _The Fine Art of California Indian Basketry_ one of the most important books ever published on the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on California Indian Basketry
I particularly enjoyed this book because I am interested in California Indian history.Indian basket weaving is truly an art and I'm glad to see it handed down from the master basket weavers to the generations that follow. This book features some of the very talented weavers.I specifically got this book because my cousin is featured in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just fabulous
If you're an art historian + are going to give a lecture on the art of Native California, you definitely need this book. It's beautifully produced and very inclusive.

It covers all basketry traditions from the various geographical areas in California, looks at differences between and within tribal styles, includes utility as well as art or "tourist" baskets, discusses baskets by makers both unknown and extremely famous, and it doesn't ignore baskets made by*male* weavers. No tradition is marginalized in favor of another in this work, and that's unusual!

What makes this book really great, though, are the mini-interviews with contemporary Native California weavers and other artists (including the late Vivien Hailstone and Harry Fonseca) about the individual pieces reproduced in the book. These people give the reader insights into weaving that would otherwise be missed. It's nice to see a book on Native America where the Indian voice is so fundamentally present. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars With just this book you can make classical looking baskets.
I have never had so much useful instruction packed in a book with less than 50 pages. Photography by Pat O'Hara and clear illustrations with arrows point out every movement. It may take a little time to make them smoothly and symmetric however even the first efforts look crafty and you just cannot bring yourself to give them away as presents. Even if you do not have time to have fun with pine this is a must for your library and a good guide if you intend to buy others work.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Teneriffe Primer
Teneriffe starts and basic coiled starts are covered in this book, but it emphasizes use of the teneriffe ring, and other "open work". Gives basic and advanced techniques, including attaching shapes together, extensions (away from the body of the basket), butterfly pattern, lids, andspecific projects using these techniques. This book is meant for beginners, but you will probably have more success with these techniques if you havesome sewing experience. Another book currently popular as a beginning pointfor pine needle coiling.

The book is full of detailed information covering tools, weaving materials, and designs. The various designs are well illustrated at each step in the process.I found the instructions in the book very easy to follow and appreciate that the author takes you through a series of baskets beginning with a small basic basket and continuing on through many baskets--each successive one offering new lessons in design techniques and ending in a large complicated baskets. 5-0 out of 5 stars Reacquaintance
In 1985 whilst in Colorado on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange I took a class with Robin Daugherty.I knew nothing about basket making but was fascinated by all the wonderful baskets in her home.I absolutely adored my weekly session and at the end of my year I took every basket back home to England where they can stillbe found in every corner of my house!.They were my babies.Along with the baskets came her newly published book.I was very keen to continue my new passion and so I ordered a large bundle of supplies..... but work took over and it is only last month (over 20 years on) that I took out her book, collected the supplies from the garage and have finished the Cherokee Gathering Basket which I started all those years ago!!! Of course I can only do thisbecause of the book 'Splint Woven Basketry).Coming back to it after all these years I am amazed at how precise the instructions are and how interestingly each basket is described. Quite excellent photos too.I want to make each one all over again. The book holds so many memories for me and as other reviewers have said has become a real 'friend'.
I have a problem finding the materials in England (it tends to be willow over here) so if anyone knows of a UK based web-site please let me know so that I can continue with this reawakened passion.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
The book was slightly used, but in very good condition as the seller said.I was very satisfied with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splint Woven
I have to echo previous reviewers of this book, it is in my opinion by far the best all around basketry book, especially for those of us who use natural materials in our work. Robin's details about harvesting and using nature's gifts have been more than informative, they've been invaluable over the years.
I've always considered this book to be my "basketry bible"... most of what I learned about this art came from Robin's book. Like "wickerwoman" I was honored to have a work of mine included in the updated edition of Splint Woven Basketry... I am sure that this book will continue to inspire artists for a very long time.

Product Description
A tradition that dates back almost ten thousand years, basketry is an integral aspect of Cherokee culture. In the mountains of Western North Carolina, stunning baskets are still made from rivercane, white oak and honeysuckle and dyed with roots and bark. Cherokee Basketry describes the craft's forms, functions and methods and records the tradition's celebrated makers. This complex art- passed down from mothers to daughters- is a thread that bonds modern Native Americans to ancestors and traditional ways of life. Anna Fariello, associate professor at Western Carolina University, reveals that baskets hold much more than food and clothing. Woven with the stories of those who produce and use them, these masterpieces remain a powerful testament to creativity and imagination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book that will teach you Lonning's art
This book is extremely well written, and if the reader carefully follows Ms. Lonning's instructions, which are accompanied by wonderful color photos, he or she can also produce lovely baskets like these. Some of Lonning's baskets sell for thousands of dollars and yet she generously explains how we can make them as well. In the book she also gives info on where to purchase the requisite materials. If you are unfamiliar with her exquisite baskets, her website, [...], has a gallery of her work along with their prices.

Following her basket-making instructions are "bio-sketches" of 23 artists along with photos of their work. Some of the artists also detail how their baskets are constructed in case the reader also wants to try making them.

I highly, highly recommend this wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basketry as Art
If this review were being written for a tabloid publication, I might title it "Kari Lonning Reveals All"; all, that is, of the unique techniques that she uses to create the signature wicker baskets by which she is recognized world-wide.

Most basketry books, written by well-knownartists, give very good basic techniques but stop short of givinginstructions in the way the work was made to be distinctive. Not so withThe Art of Basketry.

Beginning with the basics, she soon follows withclearly written instructions, illustrated with color photographstep-by-step sequences of her distinctive styles: her double wall coneshaped pieces, her "hairy" baskets, her grid bases and herbeautifulcolor patterning. For example, her spiralpatterns look verydifferent from the wicker spirals I have been taught. How does she do it? By using 4,5, even 6 rod waling- that's how.

All illustrations are donewith color photographs, not diagrams. Many full color photographs of herwork are included.

The remainder of the book explores the work of 23other recognized baskets artists such as Leon Niehues, Dona Look and theMcColleys. They each give their artist's statement, their motivation, andsome "hints" at how their items are created.Again full colorphotographs of their work make each page interesting and beautiful.

Thisbook is a "must have" for anyone wanting to expand their wickerbasketry skill to "beyond the ordinary". It is also for anyoneinterested in a collection of photographs of artistic baskets and foranyone who works with design through color combinations.

I would highlyrecommend it. ... Read more

This book really inspired me to look in my garden for new things to make baskets with.I was already using pine needles, but now have expanded. Last fall I gathered iris leaves, iris stems, cattails, rushes andhoneysuckle.Made a few small baskets, and found it is fun (and cheaper)to gather and prepare your own materials. This year, I am adding dandelionstems, daisy and coreopsis stems, paperwhite and lily leaves, yucca leaves(green and already dried),pine roots...what fun! Some of the plantsdescribed in this book are not available in the US, but the myriad ofbeautiful baskets made from dried bulb leaves alone is enough start my headbuzzing with new ideas.Love this book! ... Product Description
Baskets made by the people of the mid-Columbia River are among the finest examples of Indian textile art in North America, and they are included in the collections of most major museums. The traditional designs and techniques of construction reveal a great artistic heritage that links modern basketmakers to their ancestors, Yet baskets are also everyday objects of a utilitarian nature that reveal much about mid-Columbia culture---a flat twined bag has greatest value when it is plump with dried roots, a coiled basket when full of huckleberries.

In Columbia River Basketry, Mary Schlick writes about the weavers who at the time of European contact lived along the Columbia River from just above its confluence with the Yakima River westward to the vicinity of present-day Portland, Oregon, and Indian groups living along the river, she presents the baskets in the context of the lives of the people who created and used them. She also writes about the descendants of the early basket weavers, to whom either basketry skills have been passed and from whom she herself learned to make baskets. Schlick blends mythology, personal reminiscences, materials, and basketry techniques.

Written with deep understanding and appreciatoin of the artists and their work, Columbia River Basketry will be an inspirational sourcebook for basket weavers and other craftspeople. It will also serve as an invaluable reference for scholars, curators, and collectors in identifying, dating, and interpreting examples of Columbia River basketry. ... Read more

Her book finally puts a face and name on the creators of the baskets and sees them as individual artists. I can't believe this book has been allowed to go out of print--get it while you can. ...
