5-0 out of 5 stars a classic kids story
no library would be complete with out a few of the classic eric carl books.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Follow-Up to Brown Bear Brown Bear
This is a pleasant follow-up to Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, What Do You See?, with the rhythmic refrain changed by one word. This volume focuses on animals found in the zoo and the sounds they make: Polar bear, lion, hippo, flamingo, zebra, boa constrictor, elephant, leopard, peacock, walrus, finishing with the zookeeper and children, who playfully imitate the animals. It's characterized by pleasant, predictable repetition and Eric Carle's wonderfully playful collage illustrations.

Like Brown Bear, this book is well suited to the preschool crowd and could make a confidence-building practice reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Developing Vocabulary Through Repetition
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? continues the joy that young children develop as they read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?The relationship between the words and pictures with repetition increases the vocabulary so important in childhood development.Dr. Martin should have known that snakes have no ears and cannot hear but Eric Carle's beautiful boa does make up for the misstep. This is a book that will be brought out for many years as the young reader becomes a parent and returns to this treasure in the future. They will relive the fun of making the animal sounds.

Product Description

Praise for the second edition:

"Norbert's gift as a photographer is his great curiosity about the natural world. His magic is displayed in photographs that weave light, color and action into a tapestry that tells volumes about life in the Far North."-- National Geographic Magazine

"Highly recommended."-- Library Journal (starred review)

The polar bear is the largest terrestrial carnivore in the world, uniquely adapted to thrive in the harsh environment of the Far North. In The World of the Polar Bear, renowned nature photographer Norbert Rosing follows the polar bear through each season of the year.

This timely third edition has been fully updated and features more than 20 terrific new photographs. With its thorough and engaging text and spectacular photography, The World of the Polar Bear includes:

  • A season-by-season account of the life of the polar bear, including feeding, mating and rearing of cubs
  • A new chapter featuring the polar bears of Svalbard, Norway
  • An intimate look at the animals that share the polar bear's environment, including seals, arctic foxes, walruses and muskoxen
  • A section on such northern sky phenomena as sun dogs and northern lights
  • Many anecdotes and insights about the polar bear -- at once a loving parent, a fierce predator and a natural jester

Polar bears are seriously threatened by global warming, and this book continues to explore this critical issue.

The World of the Polar Bear is quite simply the best book ever published on the polar bear.

Norbert Rosing visits Churchill, Manitoba, the very best place in the world to photograph polar bears, frequently. He has received many awards for his work and is a long-standing contributor to National Geographic magazine.

Ian Stirling is a scientist emeritus with the Canadian Wildlife Service and an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta. He is one of the world's top authorities on polar bears.

Bought this for my son who loves polar bears. He carries this book everywhere he goes.It has great pictures.Would recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
I gave this to a friend as a gift and she loved it!She raved about the photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning photos of magnificent bears
The photographs are amazing and the narrative that explains how he got some of the shots makes you appreciate them even more. Polar bears are magnificent creatures and we are destroying their world. Buy this book, study the photos, read about their world and then make a donation to support polar bear conservation. The clock is ticking.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World of the Polar Bear
Ours is essentially a tragic age, what about Global Warming? The polar bear is relevant. Scientists believe the polar bear will be the first to be threatened with extinction due to climate change in the North.

The World of the Polar Bear by Norbert Rosing merits close study.

The possible fate of the polar bear places the reality of climate change as a very serious matter to be considered by all of us!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest Polar Bear Book
Since others have issued several reviews, I will just skip the same point with them.
I really love this book, along with Thorsten Milese's "Little Polar Bears", they are two my most-love polar bear books.
What are the in common with two? They are both "large" books, compared with other books. While we spend a little bit more, we get lots back. They are hardcover books, with ~200 pages inside, much more beautiful pictures and words description aside. They seem to be living in arctic area for long time, maybe one whole year, to capture precious photos like mother and cubbies in the den, hunting seals ... etc.
In this book ( Norbert Rosing ) you can find several famous pictures from National Geographic. I've found 1 for mouse pad, 3 for Desktop pictures.
If 30 dollars is not a heavy burden for you, I will strongly recommend to get this book rather than smaller and cheaper book. ... Read more

My four year old son is in love with this chapter series! A friend suggested it to us since he seemed ready for a more advanced reading material at bedtime. My husband reads him a chapter every night...sometimes more because they don't want to stop. It's become a great tradition for them, and something they both look forward to. We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number 1 and just continue. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE!
I am not a child.I did not read this book to a child.I am a senior citizen who thoroughly enjoyed, even loved, this delicate wonder of an Inuit tale retold with great and simple skill by Lydia Dabcovich.I am even more impressed with this talented author when I note that she also is the book's illustrator. The fascinating illustrations of a world unknown to many of us who live in warmer climes are in muted pastels, most effective in capturing a world of sea and ice.

The story is also very moving because it is about an old lady with no family who lives alone.Until she comes across a polar bear orphan, she struggles to survive and can only do so by at times having to accept food offerings from her fellow villagers. She herself lives on the village outskirts in a small hut.

I do not want to give away the contents of the story, so spoiling the surprise element, but I will state that the denouement is a happy one.So when threatening events are described from time to time, don't fret! All goes well.

I read this book on the heels of reading another wonderful tale for children and adult-children, "Lemon the Duck," also beautifully illustrated. When I finished that book, I felt that I would never find an equal in quality and true enjoyment. But I certainly have in this delightful, lovely rendition of a timeless tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Polar Bear Son
This outstanding book was well received by my preschool class. The illustrations are wonderful and the story was easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure to become a classic
I rate childrens books on how much I enjoy reading them the 2nd, 12th, and 500th time. Based on this criteria, this book is a winner! The story is simple and universally appealing. It touches on the themes of the stupidity of violence and anger, and the transcendence of love and loyalty, and provided a good starting point for discussions about these themes with my 5 year old.The resolution of the story is very reassuring, even inspirational, so it also rates high in my comfort book collection (along with classics such as the Runaway Bunny, Goodnight Moon, I Love You This Much, and the Little Bear Books.)

What really makes this book a pleasure to come back to again and again is the illustrations. They are simple but suggestive, rich in emotion, and just plain beautiful. I pored over each picture for a long time, soaking in their atmosphere and emotions which are conveyed sweetly, gently, and strongly. The book gives one a flavor for this distinctive culture while being universally appealing.

Get a copy of this book and snuggle up with a favorite child!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and touching
This is a stunning book. The story is simple and universally appealing, dealing with themes of love, loyalty, and mothering that any young child/caregiver will identify with. The pictures are absolutely beautiful - they are simple, yet convey strong, and universal emotions. As I read the book the first time, I savored every page of evocative illustrations, and couldn't wait to start reading it again. This is an incredibly appealing bookthat , while rich in ethnic/local flavor, could appeal to anyone who experiences basic human emotions. I read the book over immediately, and will enjoy reading it over and over again.

A sure winner - buy it and read it and re-read it with your favorite child! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely story with wonderful illustrations
I love reading The Little Polar Bear ~~ it's a darling story about a little polar bear who gets separated from his dad while learning how to hunt. And Lars ends up traveling halfway around the world before he landed on a tropical beach.

For the first time in his life, he sees something different from his icy homeland ~~ trees, different animals and even a chamelon. He makes friends with Henry, the hippomatous. And through Henry, he finds his way home.

The illustrations are among the best. I just love looking at the pictures (so do my babies!) and the story is fun to read. It's a true adventure story guaranteed to get your kid's attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty artwork
This is of the sort of picture book I call "dreamy" - no real storyline, very calming, perfect for bedtime. (Most "dreamy" books ARE bedtime books, in fact.)

The polar bear leaves his mom, sees that all sorts of animals are sleeping, sees the northern lights, and goes back home. Not much of a story, but you don't read these sorts of books for the story, you read them for the illustrations (which are very nice) and for the calming effect and homey feelings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kids Polar Bear Book!
Okay, I know it sounds stupid."Best Kids Polar Bear Book!"But really, it is.And believe me, I spent way too long in way too many bookstores flipping thru children's polar bear books.Cute touching story, and innovative artwork.Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Please don't hate me for this....
Please don't hate me for this, I swear I'm really not a bad person who secretly hates fuzzy little bears and loving bear mommas. It's just that this book left me kind of cold, and it's not the effect of the snow. The story is nice, some of the phrases are downright lyrical. However, the total look of Polar Bear Night (New York Times Best Illustrated Books) is not enthralling to its intended audience looking for a sweet, pleasant, pretty book to lull them off to dreamland.

There was little to no interest paid by the child who saw this book, and this is a child who loves every book she sees, sometimes carrying them around the house all day.

I'm sorry, but.... ehhhh. This purchase, based on other great reviews, was a mistake. Live and learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book

3-0 out of 5 stars An Okay Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book even for two year olds!
I loved reading this book with my son. I found this book in our library after reading a list at www.bloggermoms.com, and he took to it right away. It gently introduces the concept of how animals are caught to bring them to the zoo, and makes the children sympathize with their plight. Also has some new words such as 'lumbered' 'arctic circle' etc for two year olds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Darling book
My boys love this book ~~ they both grin everytime I show them a page. Right now, my husband and I are on a polar bear kick since the boys both showed an interest in the polar bear at the local zoo.

Lars, a little polar bear, wants nothing more than to have a friend. He soon learns he has to be careful of what he wishes for! He gets kidnapped to be taken to a zoo and along the way, he meets a Walrus and Bea, a little brown bear. They escape to go home and Bea comes home with Lars.

It's a lovely little story with great detailed pictures. It's great to keep the kids' interest while reading ~~ and someday when my boys are older, it'll be a great book for them to learn how to read.

It's a cute addition for any library!
