A shared experience for anyone who loves the outdoors
I rarely take time to read a novel preferring to use my time to find out how to grow something or understand a complex tool or program.I was encouraged to read the Blue Bear because it might relate to some of my background and interests.Lynn Schooler has an incredible and unique ability to describe his world and experiences.The rich use of vocabulary and perception literally paints the landscape on your mind.I had to have a copy of this book on my shelf to remind me of the Alaska I know and I have pre-ordered his new book based on his writing and introspective skills.I suspect his lonely life style gave him time to see a rich complex life that most of us rush by ignoring the relevance in our own heritage. There is something for every mind in this book.

Disappointing, given how many people have raved to me about it.
This book comes very highly recommended, and I will concede that the author's descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness are vivid and moving, and his knowledge seems quite extensive. But I found the story itself rather dull, his writing style other than his descriptions being competent but unmoving, and I found no sense of connection with either the author or with his friend, Michio, which it seems to me was the entire point of the story: to create a sense in the reader of connection to the two men and a feeling for their friendship.

In fact, I felt so little connection to Michio that in the chapter describing his death, rather than feeling saddened or upset at his death, I couldn't help but think what an idiot he had been, that he'd gotten what was coming to him and that he deserved a mention in the next "Darwin Awards" book. After all, here is a man who had been a wildlife photographer for years; he's in an area that has bears in it, one of which has been demonstrating an aggressive curiosity for several days. The bears are hungry, as their food source (salmon) are late arriving. There is a cabin available; everyone else sleeps either in the cabin or on the roof of the cabin, yet Michio doesn't like sleeping indoors when the opportunity for sleeping under the open stars presents itself, so he sleeps in a tent. And the author relates all of this, but seems oblivious to the fact that his friend brought his own death on himself by deliberate, stupid carelessness. I am, honestly, more saddened by the fact that the bear was hunted down and killed afterward since it was now a "known killer" than I am by the fact that a man who should have known better didn't have the sense to come in out of the rain. He was only slightly less stupid than people who try to pose their kids with bears, or offer them food and try to pet them, and as a professional wildlife photog, he had no excuse for being so stupid.

Given that this is decidedly NOT the impression that I believe that the author was attempting to convey, I have to say that the book failed in one of its key aims. Given that it is competently written and edited, and that it does have more than its share of vivid descriptions of the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, as well as some interesting history of the area, I certainly can't rate it at just one star; I will confess that it is much closer to three stars than to one. But I can't bring myself to rate it as highly as mediocre.

Well-written Alaskan narrative
The Blue Bear was not exactly what I expected.It was more. Written by a man who had a hard start as a child and teenage, he is a remarkable wordsmith, painting pictures on every page.The progression of the story is gradual and unencumbered by the unnecessary. I was interested and involved from beginning to end.

I LOVED this book!!
This book was probably the best book I have read in a long long time. It takes a LOT for me to say "I couldn't put it down" but I COULDN'T!!! It was written so well and so compellingly interesting, it was over before I knew it, and I wanted more. I do hope that Lynn Schooler writes again about ANYTHING ALASKA. A terrific find.

Friendship & Tragedy
I have been reading a lot of non-fiction Northern Frontier/Alaskan books and this was one of the better ones. It was a familiar sight at Yellowstone National Park: traffic backed up for miles as visitors fed bears from their cars. It may have been against the rules, but park officials were willing to turn a blind eye if it kept the public happy. But bear feeding eventually became too widespread and dangerous to everyone-including the bears-for the National Park Service (NPS) to allow it any longer.

As one of the park's most beloved and enduring symbols, the Yellowstone bears have long been a flashpoint for controversy. Alice Wondrak Biel traces the evolution of their complex relationship with humans-from the creation of the first staged wildlife viewing areas to the present-and situates that relationship within the broader context of American cultural history. Early on, park bears were largely thought of as performers or surrogate pets and were routinely fed handouts from cars, as well as hotel garbage dumped at park-sanctioned "lunch counters for bears." But as these activities led to ever-greater numbers of tourist injuries, and of bears killed as a result, and as ideas about conservation and the NPS mission changed, the agency refashioned the bear's image from cute circus performer to dangerous wild animal and, eventually, to keystone inhabitant of a fragile ecosystem.

judge book by its cover
Yeap, I bought the book because of the adorable cover, and I am not at all sorry. The book is brief, readable and informative. It covers bear policy at Yellowstone, but not simplistically. Rather, it uses bear management policy to talk about our own ideas about nature, wilderness, and how those ideas have changed over the past 100 years. It is largely jargon free--or at least always explains it--and I found the book a delight.

Please DON'T feed the bears!!
I bought this book about a year ago.I feel this book is easy to read, well written and told the story of the history of the black and grizzly bears of Yellowstone National Park.I highly commend the author for not glossing over some of the ugly past issues of bear policy.I laughed and cried at the ineptness of park managers when learning to deal with bears and the public. I did not know a lot about the past bear management in Yellowstone and found it heartbreaking to learn how the bears have been mismanaged in the park, from feeding platforms to letting visitors hand feed bears by the roadside.I was shocked to learn the numbers of bears that have been destroyed because of these issues!! I am glad that the park has gone full circle and now cherishes the natural bear and are working to do all they can to preserve bears and relocate them rather than destroy them.When you see a bear, please don't feed it. ... Now that Bear Bones Books is part of Steve Berman's Lethe Press, we will not lose any of the wonderful books for and about bears. Here is a collection of "bearotica" that you do not want to miss. It is a collection of some of the hottest short fiction on the market today and I predict if you are not a bear, you may very well become a bear hunter after reading these stories. There is something about the masculine desire of the members of our community that call themselves bears and in this anthology which is wonderfully edited by R. Jackson, you will find bears of all kind doing what bears do and having great fun. Sixteen stories make up the collection with chapters by such writers as Simon Sheppard, Jerry Wheeler, S. Bear Bergman and Jeff Mann and twelve others.
These are some of the hottest stories I have ever read and they are well constructed as well. Come into the forest with the bears and enjoy your time there. I am sure that once you do, you will come back again and again.

Great for Expanding Vocabulary
My 4 year old son loves this book and asks us to read it over and over again. The pictures are beautiful. The story is simple, but engaging. My son has integrated several new words into his vocabulary from this book including drowsy, lumber (as in walk), plod, den, and pace.
