5-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
I'm only about 1/2 way through, but so far, this book has been a valuable resource for me in learning how to deal with my daughter who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. The book is easy to read and I would recommend it for any parent who is struggling with raising a child with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST EFFECTIVE ADHD TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY TO DATE!!!
There is a reason that the A.P.A. sought the publication of this book.It is cutting-edge, thought-provoking, and at times, counter-intuitive, but will deliver unprecedented results for any open-minded reader. It is a very different but highly proven model for ADHD which, unfortunately, is still new to many professionals. The plain truth is that this book represents the most effective ADHD treatment philosophy to date, just as the A.P.A.'s response, and the author's national and international awards suggest.

A MUST-READ for any parent or teacher of an ADHD child. The text book by the same author is a MUST-READ for any mental-health professional.

This book will change the way your home sounds every night. You will wear out every page, as many grateful parents have before you.It is the parent's "play book" that will bring the grades up and restore the peace!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent information for parents and school professionals
This book is easy to read and provides excellent up to date information for parents and/or school professionals who work with students who are diagnosed with ADHD. This book is a great reference for development of behavior programs both at home and at school to use as part of a treatment plan. The book addresses the importance of diet.It can be especially helpful to parents in understanding medication options and getting the help that their child is eligible for and needs in school. As a practicing school psychologist, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a relief!
I have two sons with add/ADHD and was frustrated that the doctors didn't seem to answer all my concerns. This book has helped me understand more and feel more comfortable in the treatment course we have taken. We have changed our kids diet and are implementing some stratagies already. This book is a must have!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
There were many things I didn't know that I thought I did.Especially, how to go about the process of helping your child, in school, when you can't be there.Super informative book. This was recommended by my son's counselor.I read it in a day! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Our school handed out copies of this book at then end of last year, then brought Bob in to speak to us before this year starts. The book is great, and Bob himself is wonderful.I was inspired and motivated as were others on our staff. If you're willing to make some changes for the better, definitely give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating Classrooms Where Teachers Love to Teach and Students Love to Learn
This book should required for every teacher to read.It has great techniques to get students on your side.I keep it on my desk at school as a handbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gives me a vision of the teacher I can be!
This book gives me a vision of the teacher I can be.It inspires me to reach the most difficult students! It also outlines the SKILLS I need to become that teacher and HOW to reach the most difficult students! It helps me understand that teaching is more than just presenting information, but it is building relationships with students who are sometimes very lost in life and teaching through those interactions as much as through the textbook.Think about it, do you fondly remember the teachers who presented the most information or do you fondly remember the teachers who cared about you, and believed in you? Those that believed in me and cared about me so clearly that I noticed it are in my teacher hall of fame. Those that could care less about me, but taught a lot of valuable stuff, are forgotten and/or despised.I encourage all teachers to read this book and to study love and logic. You will have less anger, hostility and frustration. It will change your career!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and Logic Down Under
This is a very readable "How to" book written in a narrative style as it follows the experiences of a small, dedicated group of teachers who are attempting to apply the principles of "Love and Logic" teaching. The key to the success of these methods is in developing and expressing genuine empathy for the students in the teacher's care. The book describes the nine essential skills for the love and logic teacher:
1. Neutralising student arguing
2. Using delayed consequences
3. Using empathy
4. Using the recovery process
5. Developing positive teacher-student relationships
6. Setting limits with enforceable statements
7. Using choices to prevent power struggles
8. Using quick and easy classroom interventions
9. Guidingstudents to solve their own problems

There are suggestions of ways teachers can learn these skills to implement in the classroom.Having read the book I find myself wanting to go out and apply my learning in the classroom and to share what I have read with others. This review is an attempt to do so.

To me the book's appeal is to that picture of the kind of teacher I would want to be and then offers some suggestions as to how I might move closer to becoming such a teacher. It's worth the read. Not sure whether it's available in Australia but definitely through amazon.com ... Read more

I love this book.It gives you great ideas of consequences for kids according to what age they are. Some of the consequences make me laugh and I could see how they will be affective.I have been to parenting classes and have read through a lot of parenting material but this has been favorite so far and the most affective.I have seen a lot of changes with my two girls and I (7 yr, and 12yr old) since I have implemented some of the stuff in this book.It would make a great present for parents.I am going to buy all my sisters one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Averyusefulbook
for most parents. It goes into the why and the how of house rules, consequences, and follow through; very important. The use of natural and logical consequences is explained too. Gives specific examples of misbehaviors and different ways to deal with each. Ways that will TEACH the children why rules are fair or important. Ways that will reinforce your expectations when they decide to test your rules without having to resort to the sad, "Because I Said So." Children sometimes need to be reminded who is in control but the parent needn't be a dictator. If you want to teach your children, this is a good resource. If you like to tell your kids what to do, you probably wouldn't like this book.

Secondary schools are teeming with teens whose attitudes and actions can sometimes be unpredictable, uncalled-for, and unproductive - bullying, cheating, teasing, whining, sleeping in class, shoving, fighting, touching, talking out of turn, showing up late, and failing to do assignments. These familiar problems too frequently disrupt classroom instruction, jeopardize student success, and undermine school cohesion. But it doesn't have to be that way.How can educators expand their sphere of influence to protect students physically and emotionally? By combining proper supervision with proactive teaching strategies and people skills. This book introduces techniques and strategies to counteract students' disrespect, apathy and aggression.True-to-life stories explain how teachers, administrators and support staff can create collaborative and cooperative learning communities. Product Description
As a respected child psychologist and mom with more than twenty years' experience, Dr. Ruth Peters knows how quickly children-even those younger than two-can gain the upper hand in the parent-child relationship. Even in the earliest interactions with their children, parents can inadvertently encourage bad patterns of behavior and set the stage for future problems. Dr. Peters outlines a behavior management system with clear, consistent, and fair rules that are connected to solid consequences and meaningful rewards. The book features: * A smiley-face chart to help kids know what is expected of them* Tips for using the system to handle socially inappropriate behavior (such as aggression, bossiness, and tantrums) and developmental issues (such as sleep problems and toilet training) * A chapter on attention deficit disorder* Specific advice for single parents and stepfamilies. This parent-friendly, practical guide is the first step toward bringing order to every home.Amazon.com Review
Discipline has been given a bad rap, according to author and clinicalpsychologist Dr. Ruth Peters. In the purest sense, discipline means"teaching," using a combination of explanation, reasoning, and action tohelp children understand acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, explainsPeters in It's Never Too Soon to Discipline. Too many parents equatediscipline with harsh reprimands, spankings, and criticism. As a result, parents who are striving to create an intimate and child-sensitivehousehold often shy away from disciplining children. We've all seen theupshot--resentful, out-of-control children and frustrated, overwhelmedparents.

The straightforward, "low-stress" program outlined here teaches parents howthe fundamentals of discipline can be applied to every stage ofdevelopment, starting with defiant 1-year-olds. For babies and toddlers,Peters recommends, the most realistic tactics are to ignore the behavior, distract the child, and change the scenery. Six-year-olds respond well tonegotiation, bargaining, and clear consequences. Other chapters include"Challenging Kids" (with an excellent discussion on "How Parents LoseControl"), "Outmanipulating the Manipulator," "The Smiley Face System forAges Three Through Six," and "Single Parents and Stepfamilies." Peters'swriting style is anecdote-driven and advice-laden, which can sometimes seemformulaic. Parents who are looking for deeper conversations about guidingchildren's behavior may also want to read Robert Coles's The Moral Intelligence ofChildren: How to Raise a Moral Child.--Gail Hudson ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Only has standard information
If you have read other books about discipline this one will bring nothing new to you. I ordered it because with a title like this I thought perhaps it would give some information that I could use for my baby so we can try to curtail things early on, but the advice it gave for the first year was to simply push their hand away from what they shouldn't do and distract them. Hmmm...my baby is a little advanced for that not to mention it was quite obvious. I quickly read over the rest of the book and set it aside. It has nothing new.

Here are some examples of what you will find:
Page 34: Cardinal Rules for Parenting
1. Be consistant.
2. Take a cool, calm, and almost nonchalant attitude when giving out consequenses.
Her negative consequenses include:
1. taking away
2. time-out
3. Setting (in which she actually discusses the time a child should be in time out)
4. keeping the child in time-out
5. use of the timer
I don't think that section was titled properly.
She deals with types of parenting styles, types of children, her view of behavior management, her smilely face system for ages 3-6, sleep problems, meal time wars, and potty training. Then gives advice for dealing with specific types of inappropriate behavior and children with ADD/AHDD (only 10 pages for that) and some ideas for single parents.

The only real definite plus was that I really enjoyed quizzes that she gives quite often to see if a particular topic applies to you. They were quite fun.

Really, she just runs throught major issues and, I think, states the obvious. If you haven't read about disciplining (teaching not just punishing) children this is a standard book. I didn't see anything objectionable in it. But if you've read and read and are looking for something insightful look elsewhere.

I give it three starts since it isn't bad advice, just nothing truly original.

I'd recommend "The Blessing of the Skinned Knee" or "To Kindle a Soul".

5-0 out of 5 stars To Anonymous - where were you in math class?
I have not read this book, I was just looking through reviews. Anonymous seems not to understand the grammatical and mathematical terms first, second, third, etc. If s/he thinks that the fifth year means we are talking about a five-year-old, than what does s/he think about the first year? A one-year-old? Then how do you refer to a 0-12-month-old baby? The 0th year? Anonymous: the first year means from birth to 12 months, the second year means from 12-24 months (one-year-old), the third year means 24-36 months (two-year-old) and so on. Therefore the book phrased the age categories absolutely correctly. Thought you should know... Now I am interested in reading the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Begin
This book clearly outlines a plan of discipline that will surely make your "out of control children" sit up and take notice.Dr. Peters details many of the basic principles of good, effective discipline and that is extremely helpful though not terribly directive for parents who don't know HOW to discipline. However, continuing on into the book, you find a step by step approach to follow.I think the approach could be very effective on "out of control" children, but not so suitable for children who are generally well behaved but have a few select issues that need stronger discipline.I found no direction in tailoring the program to your specific child.I also found the use of charts and daily rewards a bit too cumbersome, and a parent would need to be very disciplined himself to follow the program perfectly... something I think many parents of undisciplined children struggle with in the first place.I question the use of daily rewards as incentive to behave.I want my children to "choose" proper behaviour because it is the right thing to do, not because they get a toy from the "grab bag".I would prefer to use a more balanced style that doesn't teach the children to expect rewards for proper behaviour.I did enjoy the book and the way Dr. Peters believes in parents taking charge of their children. It was a worthy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I guess I'm at that stage in life
I bought this book because my older brother and his wife had a baby a few years back, and I wanted to know how to treat him in a way that would benefit him. I would always just spoil him, and I noticed that he would throw temper tantrums when he couldn't get what he wanted. Of course, when other people were around, the parents usually gave in to the wants of the toddler. This book educated me in how to deal with my nephew during temper tantrums (and other times when he didn't listen to his parents), and I am very excited when I see my nephew and understand how to take care of him in a way that benefits him the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Read!
