Editorial Review

Product Description
The surface of Tuymans' small paintings are monochromatic and frail, as if recuperating from a long illness. In the traditions of Flemish and Spanish still-life genre painting, they represent domestic scenes or commonplace objects. They resonate, however, with a sense of the uncanny. Hovering beneath the surface of Tuymans' quiet paintings are deep-seated anxieties that rise to the surface in his depictions of faces or parts of the body. Though modest in scale and sensitive in execution, the work's power lies in conveying a sense of violence or a haunting evocation of lost lives and repressed histories. The interview with Aliaga traces the psychology and sources of Tuymans' work. Loock looks at his paintings through a series of exhibitions and the effect their installation has on our readings of them. Spector chooses "Pillows" to explore the narratives of lost loves and sleepless nights. Tuymans chooses Platonov's "Chevengur" and complements it with his essay "Disenchantment", to reveal his motives and methods. The book is part of a series of studies of important artists of the late-20th century. Each title offers a comprehensive survey of the artist's work, providing analyses and multiple perspectives on contemporary art and its inspiration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Psychoanalytical Illuminations of Luc Tuymans
This book on Luc Tuymans is an excellent introduction to the strange world of this internationally reknowned Belgian Painter. What is it that stirs up the bizarre fascination of cognoscenti for this artist? At the veryleast, it is attributable to the deeply psychological expression that thisartist conjures from his sometimes murky palatte, as well as his subjectmatter. He addresses these ideas in relation to living as an artist inthis modern world and a Freudian psychoanalysis of history that seems allto prevalent in this information age; including, everything from the NewYork art world as evidenced in his painting "Heritage", whichalludes to Jasper Johns flag painting and the Holocaust in paintings like"Our New Quarters".This artist also takes these issues tosubjects like the body, which through his investigation and isolation ofits various parts he formulates the queerness that follows a banalrendition of the functions of that space. In addtion, as apsychoanalytical historian this artist attempts to fuse the mundanity ofthe conscious world with the fanatsy of the world of dream, which alwaysseems to be off center, and could be related to the work of Alex Katz andRobert Gober. At any rate, this book provides an excellent insight intothe world created by Luc Tuymans, and comes highly recommneded by artlovers and aficianados alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY USEFUL.
The illustrations in the book are very fine. The interview with the artist gives more insight into his work than any of the writings in the book including his own. There is a good deal of critical double talk and bullshit, but biographical information, and useful details seem to slip through as well. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

Popularizing the Nation examines the intersection of national identity and the popular press in nineteenth-century Germany. Central to Kirsten Belgum’s study is the Gartenlaube, a magazine that first appeared in 1853 and became, by the 1870s, the most widely read magazine in Germany. In the midst of the magazine’s varied fare was a host of writings that touched on the themes of the German nation and national identity.

In countless articles on culture, politics, landscape, industry, history, and other topics, the Gartenlaube played an influential role in nineteenth-century Germany’s larger effort to forge a national identity for itself. In fact, Belgum argues that the search for, and development of, national identity in Germany was inextricably linked to the writings of the Gartenlaube and other popular magazines. Such publications served both as a public repository of mythic memory for the nation and as a source of new national images for a self-consciously modern Germany.

In its careful attention to the issue of national identity formation during a crucial period of German history, Popularizing the Nation is an important contribution to modern German intellectual, political, and publishing history. But the book has a larger significance as well. Belgum’s examination of the Gartenlaube’s often contradictory images of the German nation—tradition-bound and modernizing, liberal and fervently nationalistic, enlightened and sentimental—provides crucial insights into the complex problems and processes of constructing national identity. Popularizing the Nation is a revelatory account of modern nationalism and its close relationship to mainstream journalism.

Product Description
The Netherlands is a thriving transportation hub for Europe, and a booming center for banking and energy sectors, and other innovative industries. Thousands of expatriate executives and their families are transferred to Holland annually; and hundreds of thousands of visitors come on business.

People from all corners of the globe come into contact with Dutch colleagues and contacts, both in the Netherlands and in their own countries. They all have to "deal with the Dutch," and although the Dutch are becoming more and more cosmopolitan, aspects of their character and behavior still surprise many people.

For instance, the directness of the Dutch, their critical attitudes, and sometimes slow decision-making processes are some of the characteristics that foreigners notice immediately, and may find frustrating. While the Dutch may drive a hard bargain, once agreement has been reached, their word is their bond. They are also noted for their thoroughness, and their energy and ingenuity in discovering and exploiting new business opportunities.

Expatriates working in the Netherlands point out that it is the underlying values and norms of the Dutch that puzzle them most and sometimes irritate them.

For anyone traveling to the Netherlands on business, to live and work in the country, or for anyone who may have regular contact with the Dutch abroad, this unique book - written by a Dutch author - will ensure more effective and enjoyable business and social relations.

This new edition both follows the first in covering Dutch values and norms, and presents an up-dated picture of the latest economic, social and cultural changes in the country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a mirror for Dutch abroad
Most books on cultural stereotypes try to be funny. Often jokes work only for those already in the know, or worse, they are misleading to those who aren't.
Aimed at expats and others working with the Dutch, Mr Vossestein has written a serious book. The goal is to inform, not to get cheap laughs (though many of the anecdotes from foreigners interacting with the Dutch are quite entertaining).
Perhaps the greatest value of this book is as a mirror for Dutch travelling abroad. After all, understanding other people's culture starts with understanding your own. This book should be compulsory reading for all Dutch expats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please reprint this excellent book
This is the best introduction to Dutch business culture available. It isuncluttered, and makes connections between different aspects of Dutchbehaviour to develop a broad picture suitable for business people from anybackground.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bridge connecting two cultures
As a Dutch-American cross-cultural trainer I have read the gamut of literature dealing with this subject. Mr. Vossestein's 'Dealing with the Dutch' is the most concise, clearly written book on the subject. The book'snon-judgemental approach gives future immigrants to the Netherlands athorough understanding of and a simple guide line to life in thisfascinating land by the sea. ... Read more
