Product Description
Nearly 60 years after the end of the Second World War, the name "Degrelle" remains controversial in Belgium and abroad. Was he a traitor to his nation, or a hero for anti-Communism? Until recently, the only information available on the man and his political movement came from Degrelle's own memoirs, or from works heavily slanted for or against him.

Eddy De Bruyne, specialist in WWII Walloon Military Collaboration, has devoted over 20 years to intensively studying the available documentation, as well as interviewing the surviving collaborators of that era, including Degrelle himself. De Bruyne's findings, set down in several French language publications, represent the most detailed studies of Walloon political and military collaboration yet assembled. Now, with the aid of American Waffen-SS researcher Marc Rikmenspoel, De Bruyne has combined his works into a single English language book.

The greatest portion of the book is devoted to the most comprehensive account of the campaigns of the Legion Wallonie and its successor SS-Sturmbrigade/Division Wallonien (28th SS Panzergrenadier Division) yet seen in English.

The text is supported by approximately 400 period photos, complemented by many maps and illustrations of contemporary posters and other ephemera, completing a package that will be a must-have for military historians, afficianados of rare photos, and collectors of materials on the SS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an accurate book about the belgian collaboration during WWII...
Eddy de Bruyne is considered as to be the best specialist about Leon Degrelle and the Walloon collaboration during world war II.

For Rex and For Belgium is a complete study about political and military collaboration from Rex and other political formations. It is a fair and honest analysis about that subject.

Eddy de Bruyne doesn't hide the military exploits of the walloon soldiers. Leon Degrelle wasn't, technically speaking, a military genius but he displayed a real physical courage when facing the ennemy, except for the last days of the war... (many of his companions never forgave him his flee/departure in spain while they were still facing the red army). The military achievements of the rexists members serving in the "legion wallonie" (heer) and in the "28 SS division" (Waffen SS) are listed too but are not overexagerated. The controversial methods of recruitment are also discussed (some walloon were forced to serve in the end of the war).

Many myths are broken : it was not Degrelle who originated the idea of the belgian military collaboration with nazi germany. Moreover, by joining the eastern front, he was interested in gaining some prestige in order to become a credible belgian leader in a german dominated europe... Finally, we have, with that book, the most accurate telling about a highly controversial and fascinating man...

Product Description
The Jedburghs tells the story of a pioneering Special Forces unit, uniquely made up of American, British, and French volunteers. They parachuted behind the German lines to assist with the recapture of France in 1944. Dropped in teams of three, the Jeds would rally local opposition to the Germans and conduct guerrilla warfare-sabotage, ambush, and intelligence gathering-ahead of the advancing Allied armies. Through enormous endurance, cunning, and strength of will, they contributed to the Allied breakout from the Normandy bridgehead and to the rapid advance to the German border.

Will Irwin, who served in the modern U.S. Army Special Forces himself, has selected seven of the Jedburgh teams and told their stories as gripping personal narratives, offering a new perspective on the D-Day landings. The result is a vivid drama of the battle for France from deep behind enemy lines. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Jedburghs: The Secret History of the Allied Special Forces, France 1944
I bought the book to read more about the operational jumps of the Jedburghs in the Netherlands. It answered a lot of myquestions. The additional information on Market-Garden was very welcome. The author has tried to describe thethe Dutch situation during the second world war. In a reprint it would be good to have the Dutch part corrected by Dutch military historians.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Jedburghs
[[ASIN:1586484621 The Jedburghs: The Secret History of the Allied Special Forces, France 1944]

The Jedburghs is a well written and informative history of a little known Allied special operations force in World War II. Their mission was the direct per-cursor to the U.S.Army Special Forces (The Green Berets); to organize, arm, train, and lead in battle, a guerilla force behind enemy lines.

A good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a pleasant and surprising read!Well done!
A pleasant record of a small bit of history often ignored by traditional historians. And, it is written by one of their own - a former special forces officer. The author presents this piece of history by breaking it down and describing the feats off only a few Jedburgh teams (out of hundreds).Additionally, the author adds specific historical aspects and backgrounds to give context to the story. An essential piece for anyone with an interest in special forces/operations.This book, after all, tells the birth of modern special forces.Simply put, a great read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author should find other work
Absolutely the worst written military history book I have ever read. No maps so that you can't tell where the teams were located without using another source. Same story over and over for each of the Jedburgh teams covered. Biographies of people selected, they train, they drop into France, train the French resistance, move around, always short of arms, wait for resupply drops, lose radios, hide radios, occasionally get caught, then either get information back to the allies or are overrun by the advancing armies. Absolutely no chronology. Jumping back and forth in time. With no satisfactory endings to the story of each team. No redeeming features in this book at all. Should have been a very interesting story of early special forces but was horrible. Fortunately I picked up the book at a book fair and didn't pay very much for it. A complete waste of time. Would give it 0 stars if it were possible. Save your money.

The Jedburghs: The Secret History of the Allied Special Forces, France 1944
A really superior book which details one of the little-known stories of WWII and the Normandy Invasion. It allows us to see how many Frenchmen aided the Allies in the liberation of France. My only drawback to the book, is that the author, like many who write war books, seems to assume that we are familiar with the cities or territories. A few maps please! ... Read more

In this study of the working women of Belgium Patricia Penn Hilden argues that the success of Belgium's industrial revolution was uniquely dependent on female labor. She examines the widespread participation of Belgian women in the labor market, and explores their role in the emergent politics of Belgium's working class, making a valuable contribution to our understanding of socialism and feminism, labor history, and the history of Belgium. ... They also point to the most important research topics as well as indicating the most important lacunae in the field of rural history during the last decades. Product Description
The duchy of Brabant was one of the most powerful principalities of the Low Countries. The second half of the 14th century saw a particularly dramatic period in its history: the house of Leuven was on the point of disappearance, the duchy was coveted by Philip the Bold of Burgundy, and, by a network of alliances, Brabant was drawn into the Hundred Years' War. In this exciting context, various aspects of medieval warfare will be studied for the first time.

The successive conflicts which troubled the duchy between 1356 and 1406 are review. The different authorities which influenced the course of military operations - the duchess and the duke, their officers, and the Estates of Brabant - are presented. The combatants, above all the nobility and the urban militias, are described. Then, all the practical aspects of warfare will be considered in detail. Finally, the military obligations and contracts which bound the men at arms to the duke are analyzed. ... Read more

THE SPANISH RULE. The next event in the history of the Netherlands placed them in the power of the Hapsburgs, the imperial family of Austria. The Duchess Mary married the Archduke Maximilian, Aug. 18, 1477, and not long afterward was killed by a fall from her horse. Her husband, as guardian of her son Philip, a boy of four years, succeeded to the government, though the province of Flanders held out bravely against him for some time. He proved to be a hard ruler, and destroyed the liberties he had sworn to protect.By the death of his father in 1493, Maximilian became Emperor of Germany. The Netherlands accepted as their sovereign his son Philip, called the Fair, abandoning their Great Privilege, and other charters of liberty which had cost them so much blood and money to obtain. Philip soon married a Spanish princess, a daughter of the noted Ferdinand and Isabella, who four years afterward, in the year 1500, gave birth to a son. This infant became the famous Emperor Charles V., who brought so much suffering to the Netherlands by uniting them with his Spanish dominions. Under his rule these provinces, full of commercial energy and spirit, and attached to civil and religious liberty, were held in subjection to the haughty, warlike, and persecuting Spaniards. The two nations were so unlike that they soon learned to hate each other. The way in which Charles V. treated the city of Ghent shows what sort of a ruler of the Netherlands... ... Read more
