Excerpt: FC Steaua (pronounced ) Bucureti is a Romanian professional football club based in Bucharest. They are the most successful Romanian football team in European competitions as well in the Romanian Liga I (23 championship wins). They became the first Eastern European team to win the UEFA Champions League being victorious in the 1986 European Cup final. The club is historically known as the Romanian Army sports club. The football department separated, however, in 1998. At the moment, its only direct link to the Army is their home ground, Stadionul Ghencea, property of the Ministry of National Defence. Steaua was founded on 7 June 1947, at the initiative of several officers of the Romanian Royal House. The establishment took place following a decree signed by General Mihail Lascr, High Commander of the Romanian Royal Army. Excerpt: The 1998 Austrian Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at the A1-Ring on July 26, 1998. A mixed-up grid resulted from a wet/dry qualifying session, with Giancarlo Fisichella taking his first pole position. Mika Häkkinen won the race. Coulthard was a lap down on lap 2 having been involved in two collisions but finished 2nd just behind his team mate. It was an unusual grid due to a wet qualifying which dried out towards the end, with Fisichella taking his first ever pole with Alesi alongside him in the Sauber. At the start Häkkinen got a brilliant getaway to led into the first corner but behind them was carnage when several cars collided at the first corner with Takagi's car ending up stranded, Olivier Panis in the Prost didn't even get off the line with clutch failure. At the second corner another accident happened with both Arrows drivers colliding, swiping David Coulthard in the progress knocking off his wing after the Scot had qualified a lowly 14th. Coulthard pitted for a new nose but luckily for him a safety car was deployed due to clean up all the debris from the collisions and Coulthard was able to catch up to the back of the field. At the restart Häkkinen led away again with Schumacher right up behind him, Schumacher attempted to pass Häkkinen but ran wide allowing Fisichella in the Benetton through and almost Rubens Barrichello in the Stewart. Unfortunately for Barrichello he was to drop out soon ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1123333 ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (1987 WJHC) was the 11th edition of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and was held in Pieany, Trenín, Nitra, and Topoany, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia). Finland captured its first World Junior gold medal. Czechoslovakia captured the silver, and Sweden the bronze. The tournament though is most remembered, however, for how Sweden ended up with the bronze (and Canada ended up with no medal); see the next section for more details. With 6:07 left in second period of the final game of the tournament between Canada and the Soviet Union, Pavel Kostichkin took a two-handed slash at Theoren Fleury, sparking a fight between the two; the USSR's Evgeny Davydov left the bench to assist Kostichkin in the fight, sparking one of the most infamous bench-clearing brawls in international hockey history. The officials, unable to break up the fight, walked off the ice and eventually tried shutting off the arena lights, but the brawl lasted for 20 minutes before the International Ice Hockey Federation declared the contest null and void. An emergency meeting was held following the brawl that ended with the delegates voting 7-1 to eject both teams from the tournament, with the sole dissenter being Canadian Dennis McDonald. The Canadian team, disgusted at what they perceived to be a conspiracy against them, chose to leave rather than stay for the end-of-tournament dinner, from which the Soviet team were banned. While the Soviets were out of medal contention, C...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10064548 ... Read more

Excerpt: Bjørge Lillelien (29 March 1927 26 October 1987) was a Norwegian sports journalist and commentator. A commentator for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation from 1957 until just before his death from cancer in 1987, he commentated on many sports, but concentrated on winter sports and football. Lillelien was a popular and engaged commentator. It was not unusual for people to turn off the sound on the TV and listen to him on the radio instead. Lillelien quoted by a colleague: "We shouldn't necessarily make a boring radio program even if it is a boring football match. We should make a sports show that excites people". As a person he was often introvert and quiet, the opposite of his on air persona. Most famously, he commentated on Norway's 2-1 victory against England in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo on 9 September 1981. At the end of the match, alternating between English and Norwegian, he proclaimed (in Norwegian) "We are best in the world! We have beaten England! England, birthplace of giants", before taunting a roll call of famous English people, usually quoted in an edited, English-only form as follows: "Lord Nelson, Lord Beaverbrook, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Anthony Eden, Clement Attlee, Henry Cooper, Lady Diana, vi har slått dem alle sammen, vi har slått dem alle samm...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2067515 ... Excerpt: The 200607 Biathlon World Cup (BWC) was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the International Biathlon Union. The season lasted from 29 November 2006 to 18 March 2007. This article contains the top ten result listings and concise summary comments for each of the season's twenty-seven individual races and five relays for both genders, arranged by World Cup meet 1 through 9 (denoted WC 19), accompanied by the top ten Total Cup rankings after each of the meets plus the 2007 World Championships (held between WC 6 and 7, and in the usual way counted as a World Cup meet towards the accumulated scores). Retired after the previous season: Changing surname due to marriage: Changing nation since the previous season: Passing over this season due to pregnancy: Planning to make this season their last: Yellow and red bib markings for the first races indicate the final standings (overall and of each race format) from the previous season. Standings from the previous WC season shown in parentheses. Individual biathletes: Standings from the previous WC meet shown in brackets. Relay teams: Standings from the previous WC season shown in brackets. This WC meet was moved to Hochfilzen due to warm weather and lack of snow in Osrblie. For the same reason, the men's Individual competition was changed to a Sprint, which could be arranged on the smaller 3.3 km loop. Despite the move, all events were arranged by the Osrblie staff. World Cup leader Ole Einar Bjørndalen did not take part, instead competing in the cross-country skiing World Cup. Also absent was Linda Grubben, who before the WC 3 races ranked no. 2 in the women's World Cup. Individual biathletes: Standings from ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7853820 ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Lahti (Swedish: ) is a city and municipality in Finland. Lahti is the capital of the Päijänne Tavastia region. It is situated on a bay at the southern end of lake Vesijärvi about 100 kilometres (60 mi) north-east of the capital Helsinki. In English, the Finnish word Lahti literally means bay and Vesijärvi means water lake. The symbol of the city depicts a train wheel surrounded by sparkling flames. Lahti was first mentioned in documents in 1445. The village belonged to the parish of Hollola and was located at the medieval trade route of Ylinen Viipurintie, which linked the towns of Hämeenlinna and Vyborg. Lahti town plan from 1878 by Alfred Caween. A map of Lahti made by Nils Westermark in 1750-1752.The completion of the Riihimäki - St. Petersburg railway line in 1870 and the Vesijärvi canal in 1871 turned Lahti into a lively station, and industrial installations began to spring up around it. For a long time, the railway station at Vesijärvi Harbour was the second busiest station in Finland. Craftsmen, merchants, a few civil servants and a lot of industrial workers soon mixed in with the existing agricultural peasantry. On 19 June 1877, almost the entire village was burned to the ground. However, the accident proved to be a stroke of luck for the development of the place, as it led to the authorities resuming their deliberations about establishing a town in Lahti. The village was granted ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more
