Product Description
With the advent of sophisticated general programming environments like Mathematica, the task of developing new models of metabolism and visualizing their responses has become accessible to students of biochemistry and the life sciences in general. Modelling Metabolism with Mathematica presents the approaches, methods, tools, and algorithms for modelling the chemical-dynamics of metabolic pathways. The authors explain the concepts underpinning the deterministic theory of chemical and enzyme kinetics, present a graded series of computer models of metabolic pathways leading up to that of the human erythrocyte, and document a consistent set of rate equations and associated kinetic parameters. The experimental and theoretical study of metabolism in mammalian cells has a long and fruitful history, but our understanding of cellular metabolism at the molecular level is far from complete. This book enables its readers to formulate their own models of time-dependent metabolic systems and aids them in the quest for the many fundamental and clinically relevant discoveries that remain to be made. ... Product Description

Spanning biological, mathematical, computational, and engineering sciences, computational biofluiddynamics addresses a diverse family of problems involving fluid flow inside and around living organisms, organs, tissue, biological cells, and other biological materials. Computational Hydrodynamics of Capsules and Biological Cells provides a comprehensive, rigorous, and current introduction to the fundamental concepts, mathematical formulation, alternative approaches, and predictions of this evolving field.

In the first several chapters on boundary-element, boundary-integral, and immersed-boundary methods, the book covers the flow-induced deformation of idealized two-dimensional red blood cells in Stokes flow, capsules with spherical unstressed shapes based on direct and variational formulations, and cellular flow in domains with complex geometry. It also presents simulations of microscopic hemodynamics and hemorheology as well as results on the deformation of capsules and cells in dilute and dense suspensions. The book then describes a discrete membrane model where a surface network of viscoelastic links emulates the spectrin network of the cytoskeleton, before presenting a novel two-dimensional model of red and white blood cell motion. The final chapter discusses the numerical simulation of platelet motion near a wall representing injured tissue.

This volume provides a roadmap to the current state of the art in computational cellular mechanics and biofluiddynamics. It also indicates areas for further work on mathematical formulation and numerical implementation and identifies physiological problems that need to be addressed in future research. MATLAB® code and other data are available at http://dehesa.freeshell.org/CC2 ... Product Description
In 1957 two young scientists, Matthew Meselson and Frank Stahl, produced a landmark experiment confirming that DNA replicates as predicted by thedouble helix structure Watson and Crick had recently proposed. It also gained immediaterenown as a "most beautiful" experiment whose beauty was tied to its simplicity. Yet theinvestigative path that led to the experiment was anything but simple, Frederic L. Holmesshows in this masterful account of Meselson and Stahl's quest. This book vividlyreconstructs the complex route that led to the Meselson-Stahl experiment and provides aninside view of day-to-day scientific research--its unpredictability, excitement, intellectual challenge, and serendipitous windfalls, as well as its frustrations, unexpecteddiversions away from original plans, and chronic uncertainty. Holmes uses research logs, experimental films, correspondence, and interviews with the participants to record thehistory of Meselson and Stahl's research, from their first thinking about the problemthrough the publication of their dramatic results. Holmes also reviews the scientificcommunity's reception of the experiment, the experiment's influence on laterinvestigations, and the reasons for its reputation as an exceptionally beautiful experiment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful history of a beautiful experiment
This is a quite remarkable history.Holmes spent decades doing the research for this book.Even though I know both principals quite well and lived through their careers following the publication of the famous work, I did not know the full story of the work leading up to the "beautiful experiment".Holmes does a fantastic job capturing the thoughts and feelings of the principals and the supporting cast of Max Delbruck, Jim Watson, Cy Leventhal and others. Holmes thinks deeply about the philosophy of science and does a good job of explaining, with retroactive interviews, the thought processes of Meselson and Stahl as they circled around and finally hit on the right way to do the big experiment. The only small element I thought missing was a speculation about the possible reasons the Nobel committee has failed for more than 50 years to recognize the significance of the experiment.

4-0 out of 5 stars How real science is done
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in knowing how real science is done. Real science is not the clean, simple, easy process described in the media. It is tedious, untidy, difficult and it takes patience, determination and passion. This book conveys an intimate and close view of how real scientific biological reaearch is conducted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE book for in situ methodologies
With the rapid and on-going development of In Situ hybridisation, a new edition of this book was needed. In Professor Darby the publishers found a very capable editor. He has gathered articles which, while conveying allthe protocols you would need to reproduce the techniques in your ownlaboratory, are surprisingly readable.

Even for the experiencedpractitioner, there are methods in here that will catch you by surprise. The wealth of illustrations add to the enjoyment, as you gain a very clearidea of what to expect. It is a shame, however, that most are in black andwhite. The supplement of colour photos (and the page in the professor's ownarticle) demonstrate the results most clearly.

As the summary says, ifyou are interested in hybridisation - whether of protein, chromosomes oreven whole embryos - this is an indispensable manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what's needed
I have been teaching informatics for many years and found myself having to create lectures to provide deeper thinking skills about the contents of the field, without an organized text to support those topics. Every topic that informatics students should know is discussed in this text, examined from a deep perspective, and even accompanied by programming code that implements the idea. The programming language is Lisp. This is a language that is not used in most medical informatics production environments (like EHR vendors), but in fact represents the thought underlying most informatics applications. Read the book to be smarter. If you're a boundary-spanning informatician, you'll figure out how to communicate with folks who don't think the Lisp way. ... Read more

Product Description
This is essentially a work on marker substances useful for characterizing neurons and endocrine cells which incorporates the latest data on the molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology of these marker molecules and explains how these molecules are employed clinically. It is also an attempt to bridge the gap between fundamental research and clinical practice. The clinical aspects on which the book concentrates principally concern abnormalities of the nervous and endocrine systems. Apart from the developmental relationships reviewed in the first chapter, neurons and endocrine cells share many common proteins which may in part constitute elements of the secretory machinery. Chapters 2 and 3 concentrate on clear synaptic vesicles and secretory granules, respectively, and focus attention in particular on either membrane constituents or proteins contained within granules. A class of molecule which profoundly affects both developmental events and pathological processes - the NCAM family - dealt with in Chapter 4, is representative of cell surface membrane constituents common to neural and endocrine cells.Chapter 5 discusses one of the first marker proteins used for identifying neurons and endocrine cells - the cytosolic enzyme neuron-specific enolase (NSE) - which was also one of the first to attain the status of a clinically useful diagnostic tool. Secretory proteins contained in granules, such as chromogranin A, and the marker substance synaptophysin are addressed in Chapters 6 and 7. The value of general cell markers, including intermediate filament proteins, and specific peptide hormone markers are also examined. ... Read more
