2-0 out of 5 stars Nice try - but try again
This was required for my graduate level stats class.I honestly say I found it no use.Explainations were unclear, examples few, and it assumes you are more of a statisics major than biology. It has been sitting on my shelf for 6 years now and I get no use out of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
This was the main text for a Graduate Experimental Design class. I found the book very good especially for agriculture. It is not strictly a recipe book on how to do statistics. If you want that get the Gomez and Gomez book or Little and Hills. This book covers many topics well and has problem sets.

2-0 out of 5 stars not useful for me
I bought the book because it was required in class. I just check it few times for some required exercises, but when the class was finished I sold the book almost new.
The fact is that I don't like the way they explain the topics, it's not very useful for me. I find better stuff on line than in that book. ... Read more

Product Description
As molecular and cellular biologists move toward nano techniques for performing experiments on single molecules rather than on populations of molecules, a comprehensive manual on how (and why) to carry out such experiments is needed. Single-Molecule Techniques: A Laboratory Manual fills this requirement--it is the first to take researchers who know nothing about single molecule analyses to the point where they can successfully design and execute appropriate experiments. Geared toward research scientists in structural and molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics, the manual will be useful to all who are interested in observing, manipulating, and elucidating the molecular mechanisms and discrete properties of macromolecules. Techniques range from in vivo and in vitro fluorescent based methods to the use of atomic force microscopy, optical and magnetic tweezers, and nanopores. The book is edited by Paul R. Selvin and Taekjip Ha, two pioneers in the field of experimental biophysics who have made significant contributions to the development and application of single molecule technologies. 2-0 out of 5 stars good content but.....
The content of this book is good, but come on, it is smaller than a typical novel - and not even printed/covered as nicely as a hard back novel - and it sells for $110.00 - buy the paperback it is actually printed and covered in higher quality at 1/3 the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Book to Bench-Cell Culturing Made Easy
Whether a first year college student or a seasoned researcher, General Techniques of Cell Culture is a must.GTCC simplifies the complicated world of cell culturing without insulting. The authors, Maureen A. Harrisonand Ian F. Rae, make no assumptions about their readers, and take the taskof explaining large amounts of scientific information in an organized andeasy to read format. This handbook goes beyond general lab techniques andprovides not only the "how-to", but also gives the developing labthe where at, as it rounds out each section with a directory of servicesand researchable references. By providing time honored techniques, GeneralTechniques of Cell Culture also takes some of the trial and error out ofpropagating healthy cells in the lab. This alone should make the transitionfrom book to bench less tedius and more productive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review
This is a very good review on the main techniques of biochemistry and molecular biology. Excellent for filling up those gaps that bad teachers left behind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Info
It was more than I needed or could use. I tried to contact the seller to see if I could return it, but got no response.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok as an intro, but rather irksome
I had purchased this book as part of the required books for a molecular biology techniques class in college. While I did skim through most of it at that time, I hadn't given it my full attention.

Two years later, I've sat down and read the entire book (spare 2 chapters). My reason for doing this was to brush up on what I (hopefully) already knew, expand on my knowledge, and to catch some things I'd surely completely missed.

I do not like how the chapters are written by different authors.I suppose it makes sense in light of certain folks being experts in their respective fields... but isn't this book an intro book?Shouldn't the stuff in this book be "the basics"?I noticed that the style of writing (somewhat organization of thoughts, but mostly the tone/way of talking) varied.I also found more than one topic to be repeated in detail.Oh no, not just "refer to section ___ for more info"... nope... totally repeated.

I hate the organization of the book.I feel like the chapters are out of order. The chapters also, I feel, could have been focused differently to better tackle material.

Also, while a great deal of theory is helpful, I sure wished I'd seen some basic info included for actual benchwork.I wanted to see more of typical concentrations, troubleshooting, controls, etc.Because now I just look at this book and think, hmm... the info in that book I can get for free on the internet, probably faster and more detailed.I don't want to lug that thing around to work, etc.No way.Good for class though, I suppose. At least at the end of each chapter there is a recommendations section for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lab books available
I was blown away by this book. That's how good it is.

I'm a microbiology grad student working on my Ph.D. and I have referred to this book on multiple occasions. It covers almost every single type of procedure that a student would do in a life science or biochemistry laboratory. From molecular biology to PCR; from Southern blots to western blots; from electrophoresis to mass spectrometry; from cell culture to microscopy.....this book literally covers it all.Additionally, it covers all of these topics in pretty good detail. Each procedure is not only discussed in terms of how to do it, but also why it works.

Fantastic.Every life science, biochemistry, or health science student should have this as a reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good with an adjunct
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysicaland biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommendedto allbiology students. ... Product Description
Free radical species are generally short-lived due to their high reactivity and thus direct measurement and identification are often impossible. ESR is the only technique which has the potential for direct detection of radicals but in biological systems even these must be trapped by a spin-trapping agent. Thus most investigations involve recognition of indicators of the presence of radicals in vivo or "FOOTPRINTS" of radical-mediated damage.

Techniques in Free Radical Research assembles and critically assesses the most relevant and reliable experimental approaches used towards the measurement of radicals and radical-mediated damage in chemical systems, in cells and in tissues under the following six headings: a) Footprints of DNA damage, b) Footprints of protein damage, c) Footprints of lipid peroxidation, d) Footprints of antioxidant consumption, e) Footprints via indirect radical assays, and f) Footprints via the availability of transition metal complexes.

Product Description
The techniques described in this book provide an alternative method to understanding cellular biological structures and processes. Molecular genetic methods mainly analyse single molecules or very small cellular parts, which does not necessarily enhance our understanding of the fundamental cellular processes. However, using techniques such as atomic force or infrared microscopy, neutron reflection, stopped-flow cytometry, laser microscopy, or biosensoric-based electronics, it is possible to study cells and biological systems in their entirety. Physiological processes of cells, such as movement, development, plasticity, regeneration and communication, can be visualized using the high precision biophysical techniques described here. ...
