Product Description
Texas possesses an incredibly rich and diverse natural heritage. Its natural assets include 181 species of mammals, 247 species of freshwater fish, and 576 species of birds, living in mountains, deserts, forests, prairies, wetlands, and coastal beaches. While state and federal agencies can provide technical guidance in managing these natural resources, the survival of ecosystems and species will depend on informed Texans who care about and want to help protect the unique natural diversity found only in Texas. This book describes all the mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and invertebrates in Texas that are listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Following a description of each animal and its habitat and life history, the author covers the threats to the animal, the reasons for its decline, recovery efforts in its behalf, and resources for more information and public involvement. As the state agency responsible for the stewardship of the state's wildlife resources, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), through the Endangered Species Program of the Resource Protection Division, seeks to provide current, accurate, and useful information to landowners and managers, educators, and the public concerning endangered and threatened species. This book is an important part of that ongoing effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only the Beautiful Ones
Sure, everybody is concerned about the endangered status of whooping cranes, ocelots, and bald eagles -- and so is Linda Campbell. But her book --Endangered and Threatened Animals of Texas -- deals with many morespecies than those high-profile ones with which the public has alreadybecome familiar. Toads, bats, snakes, even cave-dwelling spiders are everybit as important to the great web of life as are their more celebratedfellow creatures; and Linda Campbell is quick to point this out. Her book,in addition to its beautiful photography and well-researched zoologicaldata, contains workable management plans for the conservation of ALL of theLone Star State's threatened species -- even the less cuddly ones. Anyonewho truly wants to know what animals are in danger, and what they can do tohelp preserve them, should read this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Ranging from the unfamiliar to the famous--from the inconspicuous, plankton-sucking Elktoe Mussel to the majestic, soaring Bald Eagle--endangered or threatened plants and animals of Kansas continue to play a vital, although diminished, role in the state's ecology.

Providing, for the first time, easily accessible information for the professional naturalist and amateur nature lover alike, this guide highlights the habits and habitats of sixty plants and animals currently listed as endangered or threatened in Kansas and protected by state or federal law. The authors illuminate not only the common bond of these species--their precarious status--but also their widely varying routines, idiosyncrasies, and circumstances. All known Lake Scott Riffle Beetles in the world, they show, spend their lives in one spring area of Western Kansas while the nomadic Whooping Cranes alight only a night or two in the state's central and eastern swamplands during migration.

For each species--three plants, three mammals, nine birds, eight reptiles, ten amphibians, fourteen fishes, and thirteen invertebrates--the guide features a full-color photograph, standard common and current scientific name, range map, threatened or endangered species status, and information on appearance, size, breeding, habits, surroundings, food preference, and natural history. The authors also list possible causes of species reduction, from loss of habitat through land use change, water diversion, and pollution, to hunting and fishing practices and natural selection.

Richly illustrated and informative, this unique guide will be indispensable to anyone wanting to preserve the state's irreplaceable biological diversity.

This book is part of the Kansas Nature Guides series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable tome of reference
Basics: hardcover, 2000, 852pp., 1,186 species with color illustration, detailed map, and concise text; another 500 lower risk birds with brief paragraph of status; useful list of birds by status and country

Of the several books to focus on rare, endangered, or extinct birds, this is easily the best one. This is a wonderful tome in terms of information and illustrations. The core of this large book is its coverage of 1,186 threatended species across the globe.

Each bird receives a half-page which includes an illustration, a map, and data-packed and descriptive information. The maps are customized to accurately display even the smallest or fragmented ranges of some of these very restricted species. The illustrations, all in color of the adult male, are of very good quality. The text is the most impressive aspect of the book.

The textual account for each bird consists of an overview of its status and population along with its range, ecology, threats, and related conservation efforts. This information proves to be very concise as well as potent.Another nifty inclusion is the "Target" information. This gives pointed tips on what should be done to more accurately identify the bird's status and distribution along with further conservation efforts that should be adopted. These efforts include specific localities in need of protection.

Another 500 birds are included at the end as lower risk or near threatened species. For these birds, a single paragraph is provided to cover the bird's distribution, habitat, and population status.A section listing and summarizing all extinct species has also been provided.

An excellent tool found at the end of the book is a presentation of every country with a listing of its associated threatened birds.I especially like this feature, having looked for this without success in the past.

The first 30 pages of the book introduce the reader to the pertinent issues of our threatened species. It covers the causal problems, solutions, what and where we should focus conservation efforts, and the categorization of the various threat statuses.

Without a doubt, this is an exceptional book that would be of interest to nearly every birder and naturalist with conservation at heart. This is definitely the best compendium available on our threatened birds.
