5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Complete Manual for Beginners
When we rescued an escaped Parakeet from certain death (she'd spent several nights in sub-zero temps) we knew that we could not keep her.We have 7 cats!My husband's parents agreed to keep her, but knew only about caring for cockatiels.Since they are in their 80's, we wanted to make certain that they knew the ins and outs of parakeet care. This book, while short, is packed full of all the information you may need to know about parakeet care - from the basics of feeding and cage care, to breeding and creating your own flock. It is obvious that the author is quite smitten by parakeets, and tends to refer to them at times almost as if they are people.Yes, each and every animal has their own personality and endearing charms, and birds are certainly in this category. What we found most interesting was her insight into the flock mentality, and how important it is to either BE the bird's flock, or have more than one bird.To leave a parakeet alone for many hours during the day, with contact from no one, is to condemn the bird to misery.Once reading this, we ran out and bought our rescued bird a mate.Since introducing them to each other, they are inseparable. Our parents read the book thoroughly, and changed or adapted the cage, the feeding and the socializing of their birds accordingly.Since they don't care to allow the birds to fly through the house, finger taming isn't going well! The book recommends that all parakeets be allowed to fly and to explore their environments. The book gives exact instructions for "bird-proofing" the home so that the naturally curious birds do not fall into things, eat things, or generally hurt themselves. The author has thought of everything. We highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of having parakeets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parakeets (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
I had thought that I knew a lot about the care and feeding of parakeets, this book showed me much more.

2-0 out of 5 stars informative but not complete
Some of the information is great, but it still left me with questions. So the title "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" is misleading.
It does have good information on diet and health and exercise.
But it seems like an overview. But I was looking for more than an overview. The title should be "Parakeets, an overview for the new owner" More details please!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parakeets A Complete Pet Owner's Manual
I LOVE this BOOK! It is quite informative.I do wish to obtain additional books on parakeets.

I wish these books had been around when I was growing up!i LOVE these animals.Their so cretive and unique in their own little ways thought they really are n ot small at all!
Thanak you.

3-0 out of 5 stars An educational manual
Authored by Annette Wolter, this manual on parakeets was published in 1999.There are 87 pages.Eight chapters are contained.Numerous color photos and black-and-white drawings are provided. Also, an index is included. The anecdotes the author supplies are informative.Examples of topics covered are tips on purchasing, bathing, care, toys, diet, health, breeding, cages, taming, teaching the parakeet how to talk, intelligence, and behavior.I find the chapter focusing on behavior to be instructive and fascinating. In addition, two tables are displayed; one deals with dangers to the parakeet, while the other deals with health problems. The color photos of the parakeets are pleasing. As for the black-and-white drawings, they are impressive and educational.I recommend this manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything a new parakeet owner needs to know, and easy to read
As a new parakeet owner, I wanted to make sure I had all the essential information, so I browsed a lot of books, including the same author's "Parakeets for Dummies".

While there are a lot of other excellent informative books out there, I wanted a book that would be appealing to read and clearly and concisely written, so that I'd actually read it all and absorb the information.

That's where this book wins. The design is beautiful and modern, with full color throughout and photographs on almost every page. In spite of being as many pages as most other books on the subject, it felt like an effortless read.

All the basics are covered--choosing and positioning a cage, nutrition, selecting a bird, taming, daily care, looking out for illness, safe and dangerous foods, and so on. This isn't the book for a serious budgerigar breeder, but if you think you might want a pet parakeet, buy this and read on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Intelligent, User Friendly
Knowing next to nothing about birds of any variety, much less Parakeets, I picked up this book as a precursor to purchasing my avian friend. I found all of the content very comprehensive, the author outlined all of the preliminary basics to owning and caring for a bird. This book I feel is safe for all age levels as it gives easy to use and find information. The images and lay out of the book are lively and fun (if you have a short attention span). I felt all of my questions were answered, I had a great understanding of what is required in the diet of a parakeet as well as all of the do's and dont's of a parakeet owner.

I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for advanced information such as how to breed your bird, in-depth medical references, etc. I feel also the author has a slight habit towards redundancy but in most cases it is on/over safety information (which is to say it is good things to know).

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful updated info
Its hard to find a book out there on budgies these days that isnt outdated, this one is definitely more with the times, mentions a varied diet and examples of how to go about it, setting up your keet home before you bring it in and most importantly mentions common signs of illness to watch out for.All in all, a great read and I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, especially for beginners
I was thinking about getting a parakeet so I bought this book and it taught me everything I ever wanted to know about what having a parakeet would entail.I did notice there was nothing about breeding parakeets, but as a new parakeet owner that is far from my top concern at this point.Everything in the book was pertinent to what I needed to know. There was a great chapter on setting up your home for the parakeet and everything you would need to get and how to make your home safe, as well as a chapter about all the different things you can feed your parakeet (including several easy recipes that your parakeet is guaranteed to enjoy!)There are too many parakeet owners out there who neglect their birds, and this book teaches you how to be a great owner instead.I know that when my hand-fed baby parakeet comes home with me in a few weeks the knowledge I gained from this book will make me a great budgie owner!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Complicated!
My Mom bought this book for me and my sister. It's too complicated!!! It's ridiculous. Maybe it does have some good information; maybe not. If your under 12 years old, don't get it. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is an easy-to-follow guide for anyone thinking about purchasing a baby budgie, taming it to be at home when out of its cage, and teaching it to be an excellent talker. Writing from first hand personal experience the author's affection for his pet budgie Lucky is clearly visible. This is the only publication that goes into detail on how to bond with and gain the trust of your bird from day one, the security precautions needed around the home for a pet budgie that looks forward to coming out of its cage to fly around for exercise and play, and the special technique of how to teach it to be an excellent talker. Lucky doesn't just say a word here or there but phrases in crystal clear English. This kind of talking can only come about by having a fully bonded bird that flies to and clearly wants to be with its owner. This is exactly what this book will help the reader achieve. ...
