Peterson's guides are usually exceptionally helpful, but this one has distinct limitations. It presents brief narrative data (usually one short paragraph) on 178 boarding schools and 78 summer programs in the U.S. and Canada. Each school has the narrative data repeated in English, Spanish,French, Japanese, and Chinese, all on one page, and followed up by 19graphical icons to give additional data (dress code?; student-computerratio?;boys:girls?; percentage of international students?).The icons haveto be memorized, or the reading is very slow going.Clearly designed forforeign readers, it is less useful to US readers than other boarding schoolguides. ... Product Description
In developed nations around the world, residential schools for deaf students are giving way to the trend of inclusion in regular classrooms. Nonetheless, deaf education  continues to lag as the students struggle to communicate. In the Bua School in Thailand, however, 400 residential deaf students ranging in age from 6 to 19 have met with great success in teaching each other Thai Sign Language (TSL) and a world of knowledge once thought to be lost to them. The Rising of Lotus Flowers: Self-Education by Deaf Children in Thai Boarding Schools reveals how their institutionalization allowed them to foster a unique incubator of communication and education.

Charles B. Reilly, a teacher of deaf students in Thailand for eight years, collaborated with Nipapon Reilly, a Deaf Thai citizen, to study the students in the Bua School for 14 years, with periodic follow-ups to the present date. They found that the students learned little from their formal instructors, but that they were able to educate each other in time spent away from the classroom. Students who had learned TSL from their deaf parents successfully passed it on to six-year-olds who had virtually no language at all. The Reillys’ study uncovers an elaborate hierarchy of education among these students, with each group using games and other activities to teach and bring other classmates up to their level. Named for the much admired aquatic plant that blooms in Thailand’s bogs, the Bua School epitomizes the ideal of The Rise of Lotus Flowers, which also offers analytical evidence of the continuing value of residential schools in deaf education. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rising of Lotus Flowers-by author
From the author:

The Rising of Lotus Flowers: Self-Education by Deaf Children in Thai Boarding Schools is an ethnography about the daily lives of 400 deaf children who are intensively learning from each other in the dorms & playgrounds of their residential school.

The authors uncover a rich variety of language, activities, and social structure created by the Thai children themselves, and show how it elevates their minds above their conditions to knowledge of societal and Deaf ways. This seminal book reveals a hidden role of residential schooling in aiding human development, transmission of a sign language, and the formation of a Deaf community.

Full of images & real-life examples, The Rising of Lotus Flowers is a window on deaf children's never-ending pursuit of meaning and normalcy.

It took us 14 years to write this book, based on a doctoral dissertation.Of value to education policymakers, sociolinguists, educators, and anyone interested in children and the generative power of the isolated mind.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save me from bad stories
this book was just plain awful....i'm not into stories about spankings, but this wasn't even that....the few scenes that dealt with spanking didn't bring anything to the story...there was no plot...no focus...just a few jumpy scenes....there was no tension, no eroticism....nothing was gained from the spankings....and it was just too long and boring....
DON'T BUY THIS...IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD TIME, BEAT YOURSELF INSTEAD....

Product Description
Practicing Virtues is about learning to be good in the distinct moral worlds of Quaker and military boarding schools. Both types of schools bind their communities with shared codes of conduct, the military schools' conservative tradition emphasizing discipline and hard work, the Quaker schools' liberal tradition favoring tolerance and togetherness. At the heart of this contrast are two sets of virtues: pride, loyalty, and leadership among the cadets; simplicity, equality, and concern among the students at Quaker schools.During the course of a year Kim Hays lived in six schools, attending classes and staff meetings, sharing meals and informal conversation, and participating in the nonacademic side of boarding-school life.Despite the outward contrast between the Quaker and military settings, Hays found surprising similarities. Both systems cherish individualism while encouraging group identification and service to the school community. Hays shows that orderliness, obedience, and harmony do not in themselves create a vital moral environment. To reach that goal, teachers, students, and administrators need to disagree, question rules, and fight for change. This book has much to say about the role of education in developing moral responsibility. Every educator, student, and parent who cares about the future of American schooling will find valuable lessons here. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Curious Juxtapositions
While I know very little about Quaker boarding schools, I have been studying the traditional boys private boarding military school (middle and high school level) in the U.S. for the past ten years. Very few of myfindings or conclusions agree with anything I find in this book.I believethe author probably understands Quaker schools far better than militaryschools.A curious study, but not recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweetie Awo Goes to Boarding School
AUTHOR: Flora A. Trebi-Ollennu

Sweetie Awo is having a hay-time in school. Mr. Odiko's captivating stories that always end-upkeeping the class in anticipation of what would happen next; the "We Five" club comprising of four other friends; scoring almost perfectly in her spelling test; and, in-class color competition, are some of the events that usually illuminate and electrify her school experience. At home, the interaction and bond with various members of the family and extended family usually give her the courage and security she needs to know she is not alone even though her parents may not be home. This cohesive relationship among family members is one of the determinants of the African culture.

Living in a compound-like setting breeds values that can be good or bad.Sweetie Awo is lucky. She is growing in the midst of family members who uphold good values and morality. These values are practiced among family members and transferred to the younger generation. In most cases, the younger generation learns by observation. As for Sweetie Awo, some of the values learned at this young age are: respect for elders - not to call older people names for example; patience; keeping promises; obedience; honesty; knowing the significance of education such as: paying attention in class, participating in class/school activities, and to be prepared for school always.

Sweetie Awo thinks all the fun she enjoys in school and home will soon evaporate when she heard that she will be transferred to a boarding school and her father will also be transferred to another city. What should she do?Should she go to the boarding school and make new friends or, live with her auntie or grandmother and attend her old school hence, keeping her old friends, or should she move with her father to another city and make new friends all over again? It was a difficult choice to make. Finally, one of her friends made it easier for her to choose - she is also being transferred to the same boarding school. Now, Sweetie Awo is happy; she won't be lonely in boarding school.

The author highlights some traits that constitute the pillars of education in Africa, which are: living in a compound and attending a boarding school.Living in a compound enhances closer ties with each family and non family member. This happened when the older and more experienced unconsciously become role models, mentors, surrogate parents and disciplinarians of the young just as the adage affirms, "It takes a village to raise a child." Another area cited by the author that fosters closer relationship within compound living is sharing - especially of food and other household amenities. This type of relationship breaks down the walls of individualism and fosters collectivism, i.e., "I am my brother's keeper."

Boarding school in my opinion is the most preferred system of education to those that can afford it.In Africa, it is the most respected. In boarding school, character is formed, live-time friends are made, skills are formulated, structure is followed, discipline is maintained, study and/or play groups are made, visits by family members and/or holidays are more appreciated, and lastly and not the least, education is not taken for granted - the opportunity is taken seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars The big decision
It was hard for Awo Marley to decide whether to go to the
Lorgorligi city or go to the boarding school her parents had
told her about. That was a very big decision to make.Well one
day when Awo Marley went to school and told her 'we five'
club then she figured out that one of her best friends which
is dede is going to the same boarding school as her so now she
knew what to tell her mom and dad about her decision.

If i were Awo i would go to the lorgorligi city with them
because they are the ones ilove.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as sweet the second time
I really enjoyed reading Sweetie Awo goes to Boarding School, the second book in the Sunbeamy Kids series. The author captured my attention within moments of reading the first page.Sweetie Awo's school activities were shared as adventures including class competitions not unlike our team houseleagues, Independence Day celebrations and projects like the Virtual Zoo.Sweetie's family relationships were further developed from the first book in this series as the heroine grows in confidence and independence. Many emotions are evoked in the idea of attending a boarding school. The author includes everyday routines such as chores, homework and meal preparation to help the reader identify with Sweetie.I liked touring the Gonpaw Botanical Gardens with Sweetie and her family. This would be a great opportunity to explore more deeply the geography of the book's setting.Teachers could use this book and its Word Bank to study about Ghana including its customs and culture. An enjoyable read for children and adults alike, I look forward to reading more of Sweetie Awo's adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Awo Goes To Boarding School
Sweet Awo Goes To Boarding School is an excellent book, it is easy to read and so exciting that once I started reading it I did not want to stop until I finished reading the book. The story is simply fascinating and insightful for all children and youth who sometimes wonder about family life, school life and social life for children growing up in a typical African culture; How they interact with their parents, siblings, elders, teachers and each other.

I particularly liked the extended family setting that Awo grew up in.The family was a source of support for Sweet Awo, her brother and her parents. The story clearly illustrates the "African" philosophy that "it takes a village to raise a child."

Flora, I commend you and pray that you will continue to give our children something to be proud of and something to hold on to as they struggle growing up in multiple cultures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coolest Book I've read by far
This is the second time I've read a book about Awo Marley. This book is interesting because it shows the way black people live in other places of the world. The book shows a lot of character building skills. I liked the 2nd book better than the first one even though they are both really interesting. I never thought about boarding school so much, how scary and exciting it is. I've read about boarding schools before, but they are different to the one Awo went to. I hope I will get to read more "Sunbeamy Kids" books and that the author continues to write. ... Read more
