5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Bonds
The author was a bond analyst for Chase Manhanttan Bank has a Ph.D and has taught in Columbia University MBA program, so she is very knowledgeable. She is also an excellent writer, meaning no ambiguity, no struggling for comprehension. She writes concisely and makes understanding the material as easy as possible. That said, the book is not an easy read. This is not a book you will read in a week and understand everything in the book. The first part of the book lays the foundation for the 2nd half - covering bond math, yields, reading the financial pages, talking to a broker. One plus, the book (every chapter) highlights the dangers of investing in bonds (generically) and most types of bonds and bond mutual funds. One example, for a bond mutual fund, if the SEC yield differs from the distribution yield by more than 20 basis points, a red flag should go up.The fund could be stacked with premium bonds ie. high coupons but capital losses when the premium bonds are redeemed at par.Chapters on specific bonds (corporate...) have a summary of questions that you should ask yourself or ask your broker before deciding to purchase the bond. Her advice and cautions are timeless - they apply to the bond market in 2010.Following her advice, should prevent an investor from making a poor investment in bonds.Lastly, the author is finishing an updated version of this book (2010?) so I would probably wait and purchase that book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This book is fantastic!

After reading general websites and academic topics on the matter, I was actually looking for a book that would not just focus on the math and tackle real life bond trading. This book will teach you how bonds really work, what drives their prices and what to look for when speculating or investing on them.

Overall great read.

Thanks to the Author for providing us with such a precious gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bond Book
It is exceptional good book for bond. I recommend it for any body who will be interested on bond.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction
+ A good introduction to understanding the bond market and how to invest in it. Clear, succinct and more readable than some more technical books on the subject. However, The Bond Book is a bit dated, the second and latest edition is from 2000, it's in need of an update. Overall this is a good first choice as a primer if you're not too concerned about the latest developments in bond derivatives.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid introduction
A great introduction to bonds and there place in a portfolio. The perfect place for the individual to start if they are considering purchasing individual bonds for their portfolio.

However, anyone looking for more in-depth information and strategies will likely be disappointed. Relatively little information about Zeros, TIPS and other products that are likely to be of interest. Start here, and then increase your knowledge with a title specific to your interests (i.e. municipal bonds, etc.). ... Read more

Product Description
People wanting basic advice about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, retirement planning, and tax strategies are often frustrated by information overload. Picking the right book seems as daunting as deciding what to do with their savings and investments.

Investing 101: Updated and Expanded removes both roadblocks, putting people on a path that they can understand and stick with. Kristof is renowned for taking the mystery and anxiety out of investing by keeping choices manageable.

Kristof walks readers through the entire investment cycle and the way they think of their financial lives, rather than presenting stand-alone concepts like stocks and real estate. This expanded edition has new information about 529 college savings plans, annuities, Roth IRAs, reverse mortgages, and why declining markets can be good for you. It includes a cautionary look at home mortgages as investments. There's even a portfolio for the lazy investor.

Kristof's loyal readership and the success of this book's first edition demonstrate that she understands what's on the minds of investors as intimately as she knows what’s happening in financial markets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great start to planning your financial future
I am a newbie when it comes to investing.Prior to reading this book, I had read The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing (great book!).I was under the impression that stocks were the main investment vehicle for those trying to maximize returns.Gee was I wrong!Investing 101 gives you a much broader view of the investing game. For those who want to know the many investment vehicles out there, this is the book to read.It covers stocks, bonds, and various types of funds (social funds, REITs, international funds, and tax-favored).

It also offers goal-oriented investing strategies. The author does a great job of explaining how to allocate assets based on your goals and the time you have to achieve them. She seperates types of goals into short, medium, and long term. She also explains types of investments to consider based on those goals: cash, income, and growth.

The book lacks in-depth discussion of each investment vehicle, but I don't think it was the author's intention to do so.Use it as an eye-opener to the several options you can put your money into.Give it a go!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps the Amateur to Re-Consider the Investment Conundrum
I found this book like I always find the better books on investment- by browsing the shelves at my local library. When I found this book, I recalled the author from my many days reading the LA Times business section, in which she writes a very useful column, and on that basis, even though I am well beyond the basics, decided to give her book a quick read.

Well, as luck would have it, a 'quick read' turned into three days of note-taking, with heavy emphasis on the first few chapters.Although I am far from a beginning investor, and still consider myself to be an amateur at The Grand Game, I found that this book, while pitched at the novice, actually assisted me tremendously in re-considering the investment conundrum.Kristof is right when she says that one's investments should match one's stated goals for the future.Everything begins and ends with the goals that you have for yourself, and these goals should in turn determine what sort of investments that you should consider pursuing.

Kristof is also on the money when she says that emotional spending more often than not leads to indebtedness.I believe that her best advice in the book is non-financial in that she advocates the beginner taking control over his or her future, and by extension, actively investing is one of the means by which he or she can obtain this.

That said, I did not agree with everything that she said in the book. For example, I regard her advice on diversification to be useful only to those that have a lot of money and truly do not know what they are doing.I don't think that you have to have a hand in every little thing that's out there, from stocks to bonds to real estate to commodities (like gold).Granted, I have come to this realization after having tried, as a beginning investor, to have a hand in just about everything that's out there.(Personally, I believe that most investors would do just fine with a bank account or two for liquidity and perhaps no more than a couple of dozen carefully selected stocks or in a pinch for those that are both lazy and bored by investing, a few low-cost stock and bond index funds).Still, there's much of value for the beginning investor in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Investing
This book is designed for beginners. It offers a broad introduction to investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. To my surprise, it also covered socially responsible and tax-favored investing. I really liked that the author spend some time explaining to readers how to read financial statements. This is not the only book that investors should read, but it is an excellent start.

- Mariusz Skonieczny, author of Why Are We So Clueless about the Stock Market? Learn how to invest your money, how to pick stocks, and how to make money in the stock market

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book for starters
It is a book for starters. And the objective has been reached completely. The book explains in a very "down to earth" style the different investing instruments and the risk associated with them. Obviusly it will be up to you if you invest or not, but even if you don't go with the stock market at least you will end up knowing what was the meaning of all those "strange" terms that you read in the papers and TV. I would recommend it hands down.If you are starting, or thinking about doing it, this is a "must read", it will be a good start for your "financial education".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners
An excellent starting point for anyone with questions about the basics of investing. Kristof starts off with a chapter on finding the money to invest and how to change attitudes toward saving and investing. She includes tips for addressing universal problems as well as guidance on gender specific money problems ("emotional spending" for women and "competing with strangers" for men). One of the most informative parts of the book was the section in chapter 8 about "How to Read a Financial Statement." Even after years of reading those closely printed statements they can be overwhelming. Kristof tells you which sections to look at and what to look for to determine if the company is worth investing in. Chapter 14 - "The Lazy Investor's Portfolio Planner" shows you how to put all the lessons together to determine your goals and how to reach them. Simply a well written and accessable guide to taking those first steps into investing and what to do once you get there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Verygood primer on bond investing
This is a very good introductory book on BOND investing.
Very well written with a lot of good section in each chapter (advantages, disadvantages, ecc...).

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled
Don't be fooled by the "fully reviewed" "2009" version of this book. The newest fact I could find in this book was from May, 2007. Unfortunately, this before the recent economic turmoil.

Don't be fooled by the "bond mutual fund" noted in the title--there is about 1 page on bond mutual funds.

I bought this book because I wanted to understand bonds and bond mutual funds at a deeper level, and in light of the recent economic turmoil I wanted to understand the bond portion of my portfolio better. This book did not help.

The author and the publisher mislead us by releasing this not-very-revised "fully revised" version. I would return it just on priciple except that I underlined a couple of sentences.

Don't buy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book Deal and More
My husband was looking for this book and we found the best deal on Amazon.com using one of their vendors. We saved nearly half the price for a new book!We got excellent service and had a question promptly answered by the vendor via email during the transaction. I also recently ordered through my workplace a and received a wooden train set for my school classroom. It too was an unbelievable value. We will always check with Amazon.com first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Excellent read. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in bond investing/trading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Bond Markets
I just started reading the book and it lays the groundwork for understanding the bond markets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boring, but useful
Reading this book was so boring it was like... Well it was like reading a book on strategic bond investing. That being said it had a wealth of information. The price I got it for used was well worth the Fed speak chapter, and the detailed explanation of the various monthly economic data (employment, housing starts etc). Also each chapter has a summary that is helpful if you are just scanning the book. For non bond investors it is quite good to have for reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hands-on, practical guide for a middle-aged amateur investor
This book is a broad introduction to the concept of investing. It is broken into five major sections:

1. Getting Started, which talks about goals, credit card debt, budgets, and basic investment vehicles
2. Doing the Research, which discusses retirement plans and ways to find information you need to invest
3. Mutual Funds, Stocks, and Bonds, which finally dives into the details on those investment vehicles
4. Making Choices, which introduces various investment strategies
5. Working Toward a Goal, which wraps things up with portfolio examples, the level of participation in your investments, and retirement

First off, I want to note the author's tone and his style of writing - Little presents information in a very easy-to-understand manner, with simple examples and witty jokes. The book does not feel tedious, and you can fly through it quickly.

Each of the five sections consists of multiple chapters, which Little calls "Hours." The idea is that you can, of course, learn about investing in 24 hours - so there are 24 chapters. At the end of each chapter is a hands-on workshop and a quiz. While the quizzes are basically a joke (the answer choices are beyond obvious), the workshops are a great practical way to get your hands dirty and start looking at the wealth of information available to investors. Little provides multiple websites (although some are, of course, outdated) and other ways to get the information you need. I suggest you follow through some of the book's workshops - i.e. look over some annual reports, think of investment goals, etc.

A big plus for this book is that it provides very practical information. It describes (although very briefly) the financial documents that a company publishes (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) and some ways that companies can be evaluated using some basic ratios - EPS, P/E, PEG, P/S, etc. Unfortunately Little does not spend a lot of time on how to use these values to help determine the financial strength of a company. He just instructs the reader to compare the values to those of other companies in the same sector/industry.

In Hour 6, the diagrams used to demonstrate how to read stock/fund price changes are unfortunately botched in a major way. The columns are not wide enough, and values are truncated or carried over to the next line. This is very confusing. In addition, some of the columns referenced in the text don't seem to exist at all in the diagrams. This is a huge miss by the editors - very disappointing.

While Little attempts to target a very broad audience by demonstrating investment strategies, goal planning, and risk management for various age groups, the overall feel of this book is that of one written for a very specific group of people: individuals who are suddenly realizing that retirement is not so far off - and that it's time to start planning for it.

Little constantly reinforces the notion of tax-protected accounts (i.e. the 401k and the IRA family) - yes, we get it, it's nice to have tax-deferred and even tax-free growth, but some of us would like to use the money we make before retirement. Little furthermore explicitly recommends moderate-risk investment strategies (even though he describes aggressive strategies, as well), spending many pages on why mutual funds are great. He also has a section on how to get rid of credit card debt and find money in your budget to begin investing. Finally, Little targets "retirement" as the example of every long-term goal he discusses.

Don't get me wrong - Little does an excellent job making the reader comfortable with the notion of investing. He stresses again and again that you don't have time to lose - and you need to start NOW. But it always feels like he's addressing the middle-aged individual who needs to get his/her finances in order and start thinking about retirement.

I wish Little would spend more time on stocks rather than concentrating so much on mutual funds. He groups stocks into 3 very broad categories - value, growth, and income. While this might be the way that some mutual funds label their holdings, I feel that this classification of stocks is a gross oversimplification. Peter Lynch does a much better job of this in his One Up on Wall Street. But then again, Little's goal is not to teach the reader everything about stocks - but rather get him/her familiar with the basics. His ultimate advice is to go with stock index funds rather than individual stocks.

Finally, I wish Little would spend a bit more time on advanced topics such as options, futures, and shorting. He defines each concept, but he dismisses these vehicles as overly risky - yet he doesn't describe the risks very well. He also mentions that options can be a good hedge to protect your investments, but he stops there. I feel that Little could have spent more time describing HOW to use these vehicles, and WHY they can be so risky. Simply saying that, in options trading, you could lose all of your investment (meaning the premium) is not enough.

In conclusion, I have mixed feelings about the book. I was very skeptical half-way through, but the book picked up in the middle and taught me some things I didn't already know - so I am glad I finished it. It got me to look at a balance sheet for Goldman Sachs and try to figure what's going on. However, keep in mind that, unless you have absolutely no knowledge of investment vehicles and their markets, this book will not teach you a lot. It will get you started - perhaps you will muster up the guts to invest into an S&P 500 index fund via your 401k plan... but to do anything else, you will need more. Nevertheless, if you are new to investing and are realizing that retirement is not far away, this is a great book to get you started.

Pros:
+ easy and quick read, lots of examples, witty jokes
+ practical information - financial docs, stock ratios, general tid-bits of advice, examples of portfolios
+ useful workshops that make you try things on your own

Cons:
- diagram errors in Hour 6
- some things are repeated many times
- could spend a lot more time on stocks and on advanced topics (options, futures)
- feels like it's targeted for a very specific audience

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 On Investing
One of the best books. The best book I ever read on Investing. You will LOVE this book. You will learn a LOT! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally organized, easy to follow and read. A joy of a book!
Congratulations to Mr. Little for having written a fantastic easy-to-get-through primer on the investing world. All essentials are explained and explained WELL, and no relevant terms are left out. For an investing manual, this read went by fast!

The author didn't make you feel like a dummy, even though the subject matter could've easily led to a condescending approach. Ken Little's tone was like that of a friend. Examples: "Don't get too hung up on being precise with these terms, because their definitions are very fluid. Toward the end of this hour we will introduce you to a widely accepted way of classifying mutual funds that is not arbitrary." (page 163); "The lesson here is that you shouldn't get tripped up over broad terms such as 'growth' when considering stocks. If you want an objective determination, use one of the several systems available, such as Morningstar.com. This will help you compared like stocks and avoid ridiculous questions such as, 'Should I buy AT&T or Amazon.com."

The book was divided into 24 chapters, with each chapter organized to take up one hour of time for the average reader to get through. And because this book is sincere in trying to get the reader to learn and be serious about what he has just read, every chapter/hour has a short multiple-choice quiz to test the reader's understanding and retention of the material for that chapter. That's a nice touch.

This book takes a proactive stance in getting the amateur investor up and running. For beginners who are intimidated about getting their feet wet and those who don't know where to start, the book frequently offers lists of "5 things you can do today."

This book is a great instruction manual for novices, a good reference guide, and is very well-crafted. Bravo. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An example of how NOT to write a book
I picked up this book at the library hoping to learn a little more about bonds. Unfortunately, this book is poorly organized and doesn't spend enough time introducing the basics of bonds. It has some helpful pictures, but I couldn't make it past the first 50 pages before I gave up. I borrowed "All About Bonds, Bond Mutual Funds, and Bond ETFs, 3rd Edition" and this is much clearer to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good, clear bond guide
I have a great deal of experience in financial markets now. After the mandatory stints with stocks, futures and options, I became interested in bonds. They are a great investment for the middle-class joe with security and low-maintenance appeal.I have read many of the basic and intermediate bond books out there. This little guide is probably one of the best in this class out there! Many of the points made by other bond books: re-investment risk, buy-ask spreads and liquidity issues, the yield curve, the bipolar dynamic etc are made in this book more clearly and more memorably. If I had read about buy-ask spreads, premium bonds and liquidity in this book before I started trading bonds, I probably would have saved myself about 5-10 thousand dollars. Her husband peppers the book with little cartoons, and she peppers the book with a fun, light-hearted attitude. The author seems very knowledgable but very human and approachable (like when she explains trying to fudge her understanding of the yield-price relationship on a new job.:)There is nothing remarkable here, just brief, basic, clear and expeditious. But in a world of get-rich-quick schemes and Nostradamus-like financial prophesies, this book stands as a refreshing guide to bond basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting started in bonds
The book is very thorough and easy to understand. I gave it to someone interested in learning about the subject and he found it the perfect introduction to the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good basi bond book
The book is an easy read and full of useful information.
A great place to begin to understand bonds.
The book is wrriten by someone with "Big Bank" experience selling bonds, not just someone with a CFP (like the Bonds for Dummies book).

By the way the author of the Bonds for Dummies books states the CFP and the CFA designations as similar...wrong. The CFP does not cover investing anywhere near the level of a CFA...when an author makes such uninformed statement I have no confidence in his book.

Anyway, this is not a book about duration, convextiy or OAS, but you will learn enough to make basic Bond investing decesions.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so
This book contains some good information, but could have been better organized. Technical terms, for instance, are used before they are defined. While not terrible, it's certainly not great either. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Islamic Bonds Your Guide to Issuing, Structuring and Investing in Sukuk
A good material for the readers who have the basic knowledge about Islamic law and Islamic finance. It may be a little difficult for the novices of Islamic finance.
The book comprehensively covers all types of the islamic bonds (a/k/a "Sukuk").With respect to some issues discussed in the book, the explanations about the legal theory do not go to depth.Consequently, while I was reading the book, I needed to refer to some other materials to understand the explanations. ...
