Excerpt: Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena -The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena was opened on July 4, 1959 by then U.S. Vice President Richard M. Nixon. Its first event followed four days later, a Bantamweight title fight between Jose Becerra and Alphonse Halimi on July 8, 1959. The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena became a sister facility to the adjacent Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and home court to the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA from 19601967, the Los Angeles Clippers also of the NBA from 19841999, the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL for their inaugural 1967 season, the USC Trojans basketball team of the NCAA from 19592006, the UCLA Bruins Basketball team of the NCAA from 1959-1964, the Los Angeles Cobras of the AFL in 1988, and the original Los Angeles Stars of the ABA from 19681970. Since the Clippers and Trojans left, the arena has taken on a lower profile. However, the Lingerie Football League's Los Angeles Temptation play their home games here. The arena also still holds high school basketball championships and the occasional concert and convention, though most of these events are of a lesser scale, considering the popularity of other venues in the area, including the Staples Center and Galen Center. Since its opening day, the arena has hosted the 1960 Democratic National Convention, the 1968 and 1972 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four, the 1992 NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four, the 1963 NBA All-Star Game, and the Boxing competitions during the 1984 Summer Olympics. 3-0 out of 5 stars Need to include more on women judoka
I am a novice female Judo competitor. I choose this book for inspiration. This book is well written in story telling form for inspiring the novice. There was some very well written stories about several male Judoka. However, there no stories about the women. The only mention of the women was a brief statement that the Women's competition was so intense when it was introduced in 1988. I can take inspiration from both the men and the women, however in the next edition, it might be nice if the author applied his excellent story telling ability to the women as well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 3+ stars - not quite a 4.
I've read the book, and there are more pictures regarding the warmup exercises rather than the technical aspects of the boxing - more pictures for footwork and up-jabs would've been welcome rather than a picture of a paticular muscle stretch if space was an issue. That would be my only critique. The information included in the book has some nice tips on how to sit down on your punches, adding feints to your game, and using angles on a heavy bag work out.The book also has a good shadow boxing routine, but like most routines you get out of it what you put into it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I Guess that You Have to Have it
It has some good information in it, but not great. If you are going to coach amateur boxing, it is a must have I guess.

4-0 out of 5 stars good info on coaching, not so good on techniques
I found the book to contain great information on coaching boxing (I am a usa coach). Actually, the book would be valuable for a coach of any sport.
However, when the book explained boxing techniques and drills it was so, so. Some of them were hard to follow. Some of them explained things conventionally, but showed a southpaw performing them backwards.
All in all a worthwhile book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference for every boxing coach

5-0 out of 5 stars MY SON LOVES THIS BOOK
I was excited to find a book that is endorsed by both the USA Wrestling Federation and the US Olympic Committee. This book is wonderful for giving an overview of the sport of wrestling. I wanted my son to know the historyof the sport along with the basic rules & terminology. He loveswatching WWF on TV but this book is actually about the real sport ofwrestling & he just loves it. I highly recommend this book for parentsthat want to learn how to get their child into the sport as well as for thekid that wants to learn about Olympic athletes that have excelled in thesport. Thanks AMAZON for carrying this great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to wrestling as an organized sport
This book covers alot of territory: wrestling hisotry, types of wrestling, basic skills, match rules, governing bodies and associations, and tips forparticipants, parents, coaches, and spectators.

As a broadbrushintroduction, the book is very good. If, however, you were looking fordetail in any one of those areas, with the possible exception of matchrules and etiquette, you'll need supplementary books.I would venture thatthe best audience for the book might be parents or interested spectators. Participants and coaches will need much more detail on skills and onsuccessful development of a program. ... Read more

Most extant sources about ancient Greek boxing are fragmentary or legendary, making it difficult to reconstruct the rules, customs and history surrounding this activity in great detail. Still, it is clear that gloved boxing bouts were a significant part of ancient Greek athletic culture throughout the early classical period. Origins Minoan youths boxing (1500 BC), Knossos fresco. Earliest evidence for use of gloves. There is archeological and artistic evidence of ancient Greek boxing ( - pux or - pugme in ncient Greek ) as early as the Minoan and Mycenaean periods. There are numerous legends about the origins of boxing in Greece . One legend holds that the heroic ruler Theseus invented a form of boxing in which two men sat face to face and beat each other with their fists until one of them was killed. In time, the boxers began to fight while standing and wearing gloves (with spikes) and wrappings on their arms below the elbows, although otherwise they competed naked. According to the Iliad , Mycenaean warriors included boxing among their competitions honoring the fallen, though it is possible that the Homeric epics reflect later Greek culture. Boxing was among the contests held in memorial of Achilles ' slain friend Patroclus, toward the end of the Trojan war. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding a Balance
Beneath the Armor of an Athlete was a very enjoyable, quick read. Please don't be misled by the word "quick," though; some readers associate that with fluffiness of content. This book's content is anything but. In fact, it occurred to me that this book might be useful in school curricula in the areas of sociology, psychology, and even writing adaptation. Its significant social issues and the author's cinematic style of storytelling make it a good candidate for many academic outlets.

A friendly word of warning: some of the lessons divulged and issues raised might make you angry. They did me! I threw the book across the room a few times. Isn't it funny how easy it is to see what we would change in others, and how difficult it is to change things in ourselves, even when we want to?

And that's part of the beauty of this book: the themes running throughout it are universal and timeless. For example, the fear of "not being good enough" and how that fear can become a pattern of behavior causing us to forget who we really are and how we want to be takes on a character all its own in this book.

The search for peace and for what makes each of us truly happy is a path each person must experience for her-/himself. The author seems well on her way to discovering her own peace through this effort. I enjoyed Beneath the Armor of an Athlete and plan to read it again in a few years just to see how timeless it really is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not (necessarily) about wrestling
I am not a wrestling fan - in fact, I know nothing about the sport.Never-the-less, I found Lisa Whitsett's book amusing, well written and entertaining. Within a few pages I was drawn into her easy to read narrative, and was impressed by the honesty and emotional intensity with which she tells her story.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable and easy way to fill their time - whether they are a fan of wrestling or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Hi, I am Marc Anderson and I have enjoyed the development of women's amateur wrestling for years now. I have recently read the book BENEATH THE ARMOR OF AN ATHLETE Real Strength on the Wrestling Mat by Lisa Whitsett. Lisa is an accomplished amateur wrestler and has made her mark on the sport. Her book details her life in the sport she loves and it shows that she fears no one except herself and the possibility of failure. It shows how she battles her inner demons to become the best wrestler she can be and is an honest and frank appraisal of her efforts. I highly recommend this book to any young person who is interested in becoming a wrestler, especially females. It is my hope that Ms. Whitsett will write a second book about her life in the sport that will bring the reader up to date on her current efforts to advance women's amateur wrestling.

4-0 out of 5 stars The many faces of "Courage"
All too often we hope to catch a glimpse of something worth our attention, and this is definitely one of those times.

This original and revealing book certainly packs an astounding punch, especially in the descriptive style for which the author takes.

In allowing us into HER mind (and the unique world of many amateur wrestlers), Lisa Whitsett transforms herself into an "educator extrodinaire", by ultimately giving us a first hand lesson on what it's like to face ourselves, and the inner demons that forever attempt to cripple us from within.

Tremendous introspective to the very "soul" of a grappler!

This book is for kids, little kids. The volume is too short to support more than a cursory amount of information on the many martial and combative arts that are Olympic events. Not to say it isn't a nice volume to carry around if you happen to attend one of these Olympic events and have no idea what's going on, but then again, why would you go to an event you know nothing about? Excerpt: Oryx Quest was the name of the first round-the-world yacht race to start and finish in the Middle East and was held in 2005 in Qatar. The race, organised by British sailor Tracy Edwards, was regarded as a follow-up to The Race of 2000 and was designed to compliment existing Multihull races. It was hoped that the size of the prize and the potential speed of the participating boats would make it the most-exciting round-the-world race to date. The record prize money was donated by the government of Qatar, which hoped to gain publicity as a tourism destination. On 5 February four multihulled yachts began the route, off Doha. The participants were: Geronimo was the first elimination on 2 March, as a result of hull damage following a collision with flotsam. de Kersauson returned to Australia to have the boat repaired, and to break the record for the circumnavigation of the continent in July. A week later the mast of Cheyenne broke just after the boat had rounded Cape Horn. With two remaining boats, Doha 2006 won the race, finishing with an overall time of 62 days, 21 hours and 1 minute. The more-than-20-year-old Daedalus crossed the finishing line some 13 days later. Media coverage in the Middle East, Far East and Asia (Qatar's key target markets) was valued at $46million dollars and the weekly race programmes made by APP were seen in 600 million homes, making it the most widely watched race in yachting history.
