3-0 out of 5 stars Good "must read and know" information for beginners.
Danna Scott's book has good information for those that are interested in starting to train in boxing. The sections on gym equipment, wrapping of the hands, movement basics, and the common orthodox stance are all "must read and know" information for beginners. The images were well done and are of a high quality, better than the images in most books on boxing.
It is only in the advanced techniques that I would offer a variance of opinion. In discussing basic punches, the author lists the left jab, right cross, left hook, right hook, left uppercut, and right uppercut. I have always had a problem with identifying the right hook as a basic punch. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a right hook. Yes, there is such a thing as an overhand right and also in ring work there is such a thing as a hooking right, but I never teach a right hook to my students as a basic punch. There are one or two other advanced techniques that I believe may have been presented better in a more comprehensive text for experienced boxers.
The basic beginner information was good and the images were outstanding. From my conceptual framework as a college professor (and boxing coach), I must commend the author on the excellent index. It makes things easy to find.As a basic text, I give this publication four stars.

By Al Gotay, Ed.D., author of "Boxing Basics" and "Self Defense Basics".

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but should be longer
Boxing is a forgotten art, cross-train and learn boxing now. Any part of your fighting game you're not training is the part where you're going to be beaten. Be a complete fighter with this book's help. Anyone interested in improving his/her stand-up skills with western boxing will benefit from this book. The pictures are clear, well set out and easy to put into a working personal system.Although I found this book helpful,it seemed to have left out some important strategic and endurance techniquest that I have found in other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's good if you are a beginner.
This is not a bad book if you are totally new to boxing, but if you aren't a beginner it presents information that you already know. I've been taking a boxing class twice a week for the past year, so all the information in the book was repetitious. Other than that it's a quick read with good illustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Primer on boxing
I've been wanting to get into boxing for a little while but haven't done so due to it's technical nature. I hate to get into things I don't have at least some idea about. Danna Scott has explained the technicalities involved with getting started with boxing. She does a great job of explaining the technical jargon related to equipment and technique. This book won't make you the next Ali/Tyson but it will help understand/evaluate what to expect when you walk into a gym. Furthermore, the section on combinations is also pretty useful if you want to just punch your punching bag at home. Although, that section does leave me wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Fetal Positions!
Before I was introduced to the techniques in this book, I used to get pushed around and beat down by preschoolers in the playground.I am 44 years old.My usual technique was to curl up in a fetal position and cry.No more!I now have developed a kitty kat punch for anyone who wants to pick on me.Great Book!Buy one, buy two, give it to your friends and neighbors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you love boxing and are interested in their workout routines, YOU MUST GET THIS BOOK.
I fully admit to loving boxing and learning what kind of physical fitness routines champions followed. Though it is true this book does not cover specific techniques and tactics of each boxer, but that was not the purpose of this great book. However, if you are into what kind of workout routine the champions followed, this is a must book for you.I cannot believe some of the critical reviews of this book.Even if you are not into boxing, but have an interest in how they train themselves, this book will have value for you.You may also wish to follow some of the routines presented to get fit.I followed some of these workout programs and found them to be very challenging. In conclusion, if you want insight into the kind of workout programs champion boxers follow, this is a must book for you.Rating: 5 stars.Joseph J. Truncale (author: Samurai Aerobics, The Monadnock Defensive Tactics (MDTS) System, Use of the Monadnock straight baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Techniques).

5-0 out of 5 stars great book on boxing champions
this is a great book on boxings greatest fighters. been looking for a book like this for a long time. geezer

2-0 out of 5 stars needs to go deeper
This book is basically asking the different boxers the same questions and finding out how many rounds to do the different exercises: shadow boxing, heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope etc... kind of repetitive stuff.

It would have been a bit more interesting to find out what they do when they shadow box, or heavy bag, and how do they change their workouts. It needed less boxers but more in depth info.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick read
As a boxing fan, I wanted to check this book out to see the workout ideas of the great boxers. To be honest, the glimpses into their training regimes are fairly short and repetitive. I would have liked a bit more on even just one boxer but the author did give his own training routine and some good tips.

The pictures were pretty good in the book. A quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well laid out - worhwhile

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Guide!
Author spread his interests too far with Baseball & other sports . Then couldnt come up with enough material to complete each catagory in this book..
Mainly all easy information that can be picked up from any boxing memorabilia dealers website

I found this book o be of very limited resource.
The book is called "COMPLETE" guide, but I found it to be "Incomplete"
Book published in 1995, but alot of catagories are only listed upto 1992.
All catagories : ie Program, tickets, posters etc only contain a selection of items.
Eg. 1985 "2 tickets listed" thats all!

Many missinformed or incorrect information,
Eg programs that dont exist, unless was talking about Botsheets, but was unclear!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get It If You Can!
For any real boxing memorabilia collector, Mark Allen Baker's "The Complete Guide to Boxing Collectibles" is the Holy Grail of price guides.

Pulled from distribution due to some legal problems with the material therein, this book is the be-all, end-all to help boxing collectors of all levels and financial means to identify, quantify and appreciate a bevy of boxing-related items, including posters, tickets, card sets, ring-worn equipment, autographed material and much more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Introduction
The techniques presented in Christopher Delp's book are correct and explained in a way that a beginner can easily understand but the presentation is boring and uninspiring. One can learn all the techniques presented in the book in a two hour class and have a better grasp on the biophysics. There are no interesting or creative moves that a reader can see in the book and then practice on his own.The book works as a reference and probably if one is teaching oneself Muay Thai. However as a supplement to a class on Muay Thai the book is next to worthless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter
This is a great primer for any of the kicking-hitting martial arts. Not too deep or technical yet it covers all the fighting basics (except grappling). We use it for tune-ups for when we are not in the dojo and for settling disagreements as to form and technique options. The way it is laid out, it serves as a great starter or supplement to the fight science student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Good Thecniques

4-0 out of 5 stars muay thaibasics
this book is very good for those who want an introduction to thai boxing training.

5-0 out of 5 stars many pictures and techniques

I needed a book to revise some basic techniques from classes I used to take. My requirements were a book that:
1. had a decent number of techniques
2. had clear pictures and explanations
3. was affordable

I was mainly after a book on technique, and not the history and culture of the art, there are other great books and videos available that focus on that.

This book had more techniques than what I where initially after, and so I learned some new ones I hadn't learned in class.
The techniques are neatly categorized according to "weapon of choice": knees, elbow, kicks etc. so it is easy to look them up.
The pictures are sequential so you can see the steps taken, there is also text that explains the technique, and even advice on how/when to use them.

Besides the techniques the book has information on warm-ups, stretching and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Coming from a wrestling background and martial arts I have to say that I really enjoyed the book
for ne I rather enjoyed the history and translations. I have a trip to Greece planned for next year and while I am there
I am definately foi g to train in Pankration while I am there.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
I bought this book as a guide to Jim's video series at the recommendation of Massad Ayoob. It is Pure gold. Pankration is not flashy, and is, at it's core, very similar to modern MMA. The addendum of Spartan options are for street defense. Arvantisis teaches everything: history, standing, grappling, and technique. The Spartan options, as mentioned earlier, are optional for a street encounter. If you have any boxing or wrestling experience in your past and wish to learn a viable martial art then pankration is just for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Million Dollar Question
The "Million Dollar Question," if you had to choose and master only 5, 10 or maybe even 20 techniques, and your life may depend on it...which ones would you choose?

I've spent a lot of time debating and arguing this question with my co-workers. Since we all have such diverse martial arts backgrounds, everyone has their opinion and thinks their art is the best, of course.

After carefully looking through this book, we all finally found something to agree upon. Pankration covers all the core essentials and provides these techniques. Just enough boxing, judo, wrestling, jiu-jistu and Muay Thai in the right proportions and straight to the point, for your all around fighting technique needs. This is the best catalog of "no-nonsense" techniques I've seen.

If you buy this book, you could probably pick the 5, 10 or 20 most effective techniques for yourself and develop your own workout around them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Well first of all when I saw this book I was a little if-ie about buying this book since so many others suck so I checked the reviews and they were surprizingly amazing so I took a chance and loved it, only problem I saw in the book was that the move on the cover of the book isnt show (its a spartan disarmment technique SHOWN ON HUMAN WEAPON ([...] then search human weapon) UNDER PANKRATION) but other than that he goes into amazing depth with the moves and combinations (amazing) with a brief chapter on the history of the sport (very basic) but he shows everything that a modern mma fighter does and wrestlers like me (judo sombo jujitsu) would do to make this review short I would say definitly get the book if you would like to learn the moves and training to go with it also!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentread!
This is definitely Grandmaster Arvanitis best work to date on his revised form of the ancient Greek martial arts. It is both thorough and clearly explained as is usual for this expert teacher and is a must for anyone interested in Pankration. In fact, it is such an excellent book I would recommend it to anyone as it could easily tempt someone to take up the art. The first section of the book deals with the history and evolution of the art and it's inclusion in the early olympics while the second half covers clearly the physical components involved in modern Pankration such as the ready position, mobility, strikes, upright grappling and ground fighting. This is definitely one of those books I will read again and again and as such can't recommend it highly enough! ... Read more

Boxing has a long and eventful history and its drama, excitement and humor are covered in this fascinating account of the noble—and sometimes ignoble—art all over the world. It covers the bare-knuckle days when the Duke of Cumberland callously abandoned his protégé Jack Broughton when the latter could no longer fight on because he was blind as well as the famous fight in 1964, when the charismatic Muhammad Ali knocked out Sonny Liston with a "phantom punch" that no one in the audience saw thrown. It also highlights the advent in the 21st century of the dreaded "Beast from the East," the 7-foot-tall Russian Nikolai Valuev who powered his inexorable way to the world heavyweight title. Product Description
Boxing fans love the upset, seeing the underdog surprise the heavy favorite and take the fight to him, winning over the fans and—perhaps even more important—the judges. Sylvester Stallone mined that emotion through his long series of Rocky films.

Rocky is fiction, however. The men in Rocky Lives! are real. David E. Finger, a writer for top boxing website FightNews.com, presents chronologically seventy-five heavyweight boxing upsets of the 1990s. Some involve boxers still fighting today; others contain a cautionary tale of once-great boxers chasing one last payday. There are also the early-round disasters of wannabes and athletes who switched to boxing in midstream.

From the Tyson-Douglas, Foreman-Moorer, and Lewis-McCall top-dollar fights to low-level curiosities like former New York Jet Mark Gastineau getting embarrassed or Eric "Butterbean" Esch taking to the ring, David Finger presents the best heavyweight upsets the 1990s have to offer. You’ll read about crooked promoters drugging opponents, a convicted felon hoping victory in the ring will win him leniency, and a forty-five-year-old preacher looking to exorcise a two-decade-old demon. Rocky Lives! brings all the knockouts and slugfests right into your home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An unknown but vital in the history of boxing
Even for the most die-hard boxing fan/historian, the Lonsdale name is virtually unknown. The only time we in America get to see anything with the Lonsdale name is when an HBO or Showtime boxing event is held in the UK (usually Manchester, England). This book goes into great detail about the rich history not only the of the Lonsdale Belt (the oldest and longest-running boxing prize in history) but into the cultural impact that Lonsdale name would have on the sport of boxing across the world. The Lonsdale name continues to have a long history in the world of boxing in the UK, high-quality equipment, and even clothing.I would highly recommend this book for any avid boxing fan and/or historian and take advantage of the opportunity to own this unique book.I would also recommend looking up [...] and see the new project to bring the Lonsdale name to the United States. ... Product Description
Professional sports in America offer numerous examples of equal opportunity and broken down racial barriers. These developments call for pride and celebration. Yet skin color continues to have an influence in how Americans experience sport. From Al Campanis’ statement about the under-representation of blacks in baseball front offices to the almost exclusively white ownership of professional teams, one sees that sports, though admirably more equitable than other societal institutions, are hardly a colorblind American pursuit.

Choosing the racially charged sport of boxing for investigation, the author has compiled dozens of statistics measuring whether or not America’s racial majority still yearns for a white champion—a Great White Hope. Drawing upon data from The Ring Magazine and its annual record books, this study endeavors to bolster or refute the popular perception in boxing circles that white fighters of lesser ability are helped along to their sports elite level, as a result of being promotional gold in the eyes of the public. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Two Gloves Up for Lindsay's book!
Boxing enthusiasts and general readers alike will appreciate the depth and scope of this volume. The author's introduction explains the extensive research which underlies his presentation.Lindsay's several years of library investigation is supplemented by peer research at otherwise inaccessible locations. The result:an impressive catalogue of statistics which trace professional boxers' records extending more than three decades. One can consult "Boxing in Black and White" as a reference book, locating a specific fighter's set of stats. One can, additionally, use the volume to compare trends.Of course, Lindsay delineates all these data to address the key issue:whether--and to what extent--racial identity was a factor in professional boxing.Don't miss the index; the entries show Lindsay's thorough work and make for easy cross-referencing.I am delighted to have a copy of this book in my personal library--and I am neither a boxing fan nor a statistician. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only!
Very short on the fundamentals of stance, movement and punches. Really limited on information for the reader, but a starting point before other books. My overall option is not to bother and go with Boxer's Start-Up : A Beginner's Guide to Boxing (Start-Up Sports, No 9).

The other thing I didn't like was that all the example pictures were of these two smiling idiots. Really took the meanness out of boxing.
