A Roller Coaster Ride With Brain Injury(For Loved Ones) has been written to assist those who are experiencing a similar tragedyto realize they are not alone. By reading my story it will help them adjust to themonumental changes in their life and that of their injured family member.

They will learn that it is sometimes two steps forward and onestep back. In the days ahead, they will learn not to take things personally if theirbrain injured loved one becomes angry or verbally abusive and they will discover theimportance of setting boundaries for themselves. As well, it is important not to feelguilty if they wish time for themselves or if they occasionally feel frustrated; theirlife has changed also.

Initially the most crucial things to doare ‘ask the right questions’; ’take control of thesituation’; ’be proactive’; ‘be their ownadvocate’ for their injured family member and realize the necessity of‘having support’. These are vital when battling cognitive andbehavioral problems, frustration and anger management difficulties, confusion andshort-term memory loss as well as other brain injury impairments.

Included with my story are sample cognitive exercises that we used at an early stage inLarry’s development which helped immensely in his progress towards recovery.

As time goes on they will learn that there are adaptations andadjustments that will be necessary to make. There will also be many ‘bumps inthe road’ but things really do get better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Terrifying
Caregivers Tale is a fascinating and terrifying account of how quickly and often life can go out of control once traumatic brain injury enters the picture. Marie Gass was meticulous in communicating with friends and family after her husband Don's injury. This and her own practice of writing out history as it happens allowed her to assemble an amazingly detailed account of what happened to her life when Don's recovery took it over. The story is well written and very personal. It will be a great help to anyone caring for a loved one under these circumstances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caregiving: Love, Friendship, Frustration, Laughter
I found it hard to put this book down. It's so well written that it just draws you right in.I think it would benefit anyone who's involved in care giving. It's told from the caregiver's point of view and you feel like you're there going through each crisis as it happens. It made me realize that a trauma changes not only the victim's life, but also the lives of the family. It made see things from a totally different perspective. The first part of the book concerns the accident and it's consequences. The author conveys a real sense of the couple's personalities. You come to know and care for them through the love and friendship they share. The second part of the book deals with the following years, and living with the results of the injury. The author has been caring for her husband for seven years. She's very honest about her frustration and feelings. I think it's most encouraging for other caregivers experiencing the same emotional roller coaster to know that they are not alone, and they are having normal reactions to extraordinary situations.Anyhow, I was so impressed I bought another copy to give to a friend of mine who's her Mother's caregiver, and have recommended this book to several others.

5-0 out of 5 stars back of the book endorsement
A "must read" for any caregiver. The detailed case study takes the reader inside the caregiver/spouse's head. Experience the confusion, the pathos, the exhaustion, the hopes and dashed hopes, and the tedium of a life completely changed by an unfortunate incident.

The excellent writing style, the clarity, the humor and pathos, and the very practical issues presented make this a very valuable book. Interspersed are original verses (one of which, Living With Brain Injury, was published in NorthwestCaregiver newsletter).

I laughed and cried and relived my own caregiving experiences.Marie created a protective dome to shield her from hurt. In my case, I called it the "frozen face". I could feel when my patience was stretched almost to the breaking point and my face would stop showing emotion and become a stoic mask.

This would also be a valuable read for those who are uncertain how to help or relate to couples going through "chronic crisis" situations. Her reaction to "canned consolations" is eye opening. Positive suggestions are given for how friends can help instead of withdrawing.

This caregiver's personal life with its art expression, the warm closeness of being a couple with her husband, the freedom to do what and when she wishes, and the joy of just "being" and not constantly "on duty, on call" was lost. I believe that one who hasn't experienced this reality first hand can't really understand or relate to the full-time caregiver role.Living Marie's experience through her perceptions, thoughts, and insights so clearly expressed is an invaluable teaching aid which should be required reading for nursing students, social work students, and all practitioners in the healthcare field.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dear Marie Therese Gass
I have fallen in love with your story!I find it hard not to pick up during the day, then I have a hard time putting it down.If I just say I'll read a paragraph more, next thing I have polished off 5 more pages and I'm late with something.I especially appreciate your sense of humor.I know in this crazy brain damaged world, it's important to not fall into the "poor us" abyss.

The similarities in our stories are the fall, complications as the body tries to survive, the outpouring of help in the beginning. The whole range of emotions from devastation to hope to Oh my God why me.

In all honesty I loved your book and yet there were times when I was scared of your book.Sometimes I needed to put it down for a few days, to give myself time to deal with the realization that my partner, although alive, may be lost to me forever. You hit the nail right on the head when you said, Progress is not always permanent.Your story made me laugh, cry, and hope for a better tomorrow.

I recommend your book--you have a wonderful way with words and it helps the rest of us to finally have the words to say what is going on inside.I want to most of all thank you for helping me heal by reading this book. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for that the most.

Product Description
This book is crafted around soldiers stories of their war experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan that culminate in life-altering injuries to the brain and psyche, along with the equally dramatic story of their recoveries. An irony of America s 21st century wars has been that while our combat medical and medevac capabilities have grown enormously (from a rough average of 4:1 wounded to dead in WWII to 8:1 today), the nature of many of our soldiers wounds has undergone a subtle change. Men and women who survive the thick of combat, including repeated concussions, increasingly present a difficult-to-detect kind of injury, no less debilitating then wounds from bullets or shrapnel.

This book documents the ever-increasing cases of physical or mental brain trauma among our vets that has risen as a direct result of more soldiers surviving their flesh wounds on the battlefield. The chapters are developed from interviews with troops and their family members, and bridged with essays by mental health professionals, veterans advocates, and members of the VA and DoD, all of whom are working in the front lines of what is quickly developing into a national crisis of unfathomable cost in both lives and money.

All royalties from this work will go directly to the front line of support for wounded warriors with PTSD and TBI, and their families. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational understanding
This book gives inspiration and incite into those whom have Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD problems.

First, let me say, everyone who deals with vets of OIF/OEF in the VA system and TBI patients should own a copy of this book. There is not much out there excet for the very technical books.

Some of this comes from a soldir's point of view and experiances as well as spouses and doctors/psychiatrists dealing with this issue.

This also should find its way into your library if you work at any of numerous military hospitals or command troops in the warzone, have troops in your unit from the warzone. This book will help you see some of the problems and your soldiers/marines might not even be aware of having some of the symptons of TBI or PTSD.

Also, this book should be owned by those who have been disgnosed with TBI.

The reasons why is because it shows you are not alone in your struggles and can see that those with serious TBI problems can live a normal life with some help. We are not so defective that we cannot have a normal life in the military and other civilian jobs.

In a sense, this book also helps dispell some of the myths of a TBI patient.

I say all this because I wrote the chapter on myself(23) and hope to inspire other TBI patients to realize our life does not have to be an abnormal life and unable to function in society or job vocations.

It takes work and sometimes can be hard, yet we determine the level of quality of life that we decide. TBI affects some people in many different ways. No TBI patient's experiance will ever be the same of another.

So I reccomemd this book to many who deal with TBI patients, TBI patients and anyone who commands troops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful true stories of our nation's most recent walking wounded and the valiant efforts of those who try to help them.
This is a most important book, timely and accurate yet full of sincere concern and compassion for those numerous servicemembers who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. As in the quote from Tracy Williams of the NEW ORLEANS PICAYUNE used in the Introduction "Every war has its signature wound. In World War I it was poison gas-damaged lungs. In World War II it was retaliation that caused cancer. In Vietnam it was Agent Orange that caused neurological damage and skin disorders, and for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts it is TBI." Chapter by chapter this book describes the struggles of many servicemembers and their families who having endured the horrors of war now having to face the challenges of readjustment to civilian life. A Navy Hospital Corpsman veteran myself I did not, however, serve during a wartime period. Now, however, reading the stories of what our newest warriors have to endure can only give one a source of renewed commitment to trying to be supportive today. It is shocking that so many servicemembers still have to endure the insensivity of a sensation driven media who on the one hand insists it supports our military but on the other, takes every opportunity it can to bash efforts taken for the military to "take care of their own." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very pleased
the book is very informative, a grat resource for writing papers on this topic and an excellent tool for understanding the current trends in this population

4-0 out of 5 stars Important, but not comforting....
This book, based on a recent (2007-08) RAND study is, so far, the best look we have into what we, as a nation, and what we as mental health providers are likely to be facing over the next half century.

The study lays out three "signature injuries" of the Iraq/Afghanistan war -- PTSD, depression, and TBI or traumatic brain injury (formerly known as closed head injury).Yes, the study has severe limitations, which to their credit, they acknowledge. As a mental health provider working regularly with soldiers from this war and working a lot with the families of soliders from this war, it's my strong guess that their phone interviews grossly underestimate the prevalance of all three injuries. And their prevalence rates -- 14% for PTSD; 14% for major depression, and scariest of all, 19% for TBI -- are truly sobering. This alone totals to over a third of a million young men & women.

The reasons I believe for underestimates are not only my work with "supposedly" non-PTSD, TBI & major depression soliders. It's also 1.knowing how difficult it is for soldiers to admit to these problems, because it so goes against the grain of their own self-perceptiions & hopes and of the necessary military culture, 2.because of the tragically lingering & sometimes horrendous prejudices still against soliders admitting to PTSD (I know, for example, of a solider who was shamed, this within the last few months (2008), by his commanding officer and in front of his fellow soliders), 3. lingering misperceptions on what PTSD, depression and TBI are & what they mean, 4.I have never seen a TBI that didn't go toward major depression & PTSD once it became clear to the person what the on-going deficits & limitations were, and 5. how common major depression becomes once PTSD has settled in for a longer run.Co-morbidity rates -- how common it is to find major depression with PTSD -- run, I believe, at about 60% -- many of us believe that depression is a common part of PTSD.Just as frightening, the comordity rates of PTSD & addictions or alcoholism with males run, as I recall, about 65%, around 2/3's, among vets about 75%.And addictions, while discussed in this study, wasn't given a prominent place. You have to read quite abit to find it.

The Army & Air Force (I haven't worked with the Navy & Marines) are making genuine & on-going efforts & good progress in changing their culture & systems around assessing, respecting & treating these combat injuries. They're also doing much better in educating soliders & their families, and in setting up programs and promoting access to those programs for treating these illnesses.Only those of us who've worked in the too-recent "bad old days" know how much improvement has been made. And there are now ways, once we know what's happening, to provide for official support & healing.

But:this study, the breadth of these injuries is enormously scary. As the Rand study points out, this will be very, very costly for a long time.(The study provides preliminary cost estimates.)It's also likely to overwhelm the VA, which is, I'm told, powering up in response.

We have, as a field, good techniques for treating PTSD & depression, with more appearing all the time. But our ignorance in assesing & treating TBI is truly vast.We have 60 years, since WWII, of clear evidence on what happens with combat PTSD over the lifetime. Our knowledge of TBI, especially in its less severe forms, over the lifespan is poor.I've worked with TBI's regularly for over a decade and my wife in the last few years sustained a serious TBI.(I've worked 20 years with PTSD & major depression.)At this stage with TBI, we don't even know what we don't know.

Again, this book has important information for all citizens. We're going to be voting monies to support our wounded vets, this in a time of severely limited budgets. We're going to be designing programs to meet these needs, needs which can have even greater costs if we don't treat these injuries.(This study makes clear and, generally, solid recommendations here, too.)Whatever we may think of this war, we must join together to support the men & women we, as a country, have asked to fight.Anything less is dishonorable. This book prepares us, in many ways, for our responsibilities:what that means, what we're facing, what it's going to cost.

The problem with this book is its not only its incompleteness, but just as much its completeness. Most of us, including mental health professionals, don't need this detail and can't even productively wade through it.I can only hope that a book half or a quarter of its 450 pages will ultimately be produced.Because not only mental health providers & policy planners need to know the scope and the recommendations on services. So do ordinary citizens. And unless you're willing to wade through a lot of words -- mercifully not as many technical words as could be -- you'll likely be overwhelmed.Note, too:this book is not about how to assess or treat any of these disorders.

But as a country, and as voters, we need to know what's here. ... Read more

Product Description
A man's character is revealed by his actions. Author Michael Little suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage, which left him unable to speak intelligibly, crippled, blind, and senseless. Michael refused to be defined by his injury, choosing instead to let his struggle and recovery speak for him. Stranger in the Mirror is the story of one man's journey through his dark night of soul to enlightenment. Michael shows us that our lives are full of choices and our limitations are often self-imposed. Facing tragedy with humor, grit and grace, Michael found redemption. In writing this remarkable book, he shows the way for all of us, to reassess and redirect our lives in a more positive meaningful direction. Stranger in the Mirror is a highly literate book that may send some readers scrambling for their dictionary. The author isn't showing off, but he is careful to use the words he means, and mean what he writes. This joyous book is a dazzling tour de force, filled with humor and wisdom. It is sure to inspire courage and bring hope to stroke and brain injured survivors and their families. Michael shows all of us we, too, can have the happy ending we deserve. This powerful book will lift you to new heights where the air is thinner. This is the owner's manual stroke and brain injury survivors need. Brain injury needn't be the end. It can be a beginning. More than half this wonderful book is of a medical nature; what families and survivors should know to help them move forward. The balance focuses on the author's struggles, his blunders, and his insights into a brain damaged world. "The author should be immensely proud. This book is good medicine. You'll laugh out loud!" said author Mark Twain. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very personal and a bit strange
I got this book to try to understand what my father was going through. This account was too personal and without some distance and insight from a biographer or Dr. it did not do much to aid me. Some might argue that it is exactly from being very personal that one could get a clear picture of this man's struggle.Maybe it did that but I did not find it helped me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Practical Book for Stroke Survivors

Allow me to open by saying that I am biased.I am biased because I still remember the morning that I got a call from Mike telling me that he was in the hospital after having suffered his stroke. This call took place several weeks after the event, not immediately after. His voice weak, his words slurred, and most of the things that he said had to be repeated at least one time.To say that I felt heartbroken for him is certainly an understatement. It was awkward for me to hear him in that condition, and I imagined that it was awkward for him to find himself in that state as well.
Then something happened; something I will never forget. He called one day and, sounding quite a bit better though not yet back to his former self, said that he had been encouraged to write a book about his experience. He envisioned a book that would help EVERY survivor, EVERY caretaker of the survivor, and EVERY family member of the survivor. Now there were undoubtably scores of books out there for the healthcare professional treating brain injured people, but were there many, if any, books out there that acted as a guide for the laymen, the average Joe?I didn't know, and I don't know if he did either. So, he gave it a shot.
The result has been more than I could have hoped for.I had envisioned a book that was simply an A to Z listing of "helpful" advice, but his vision had been greater.Had he listened to me I suppose we would have been stuck with what would have been little more than a list of dos and do nots. What he has created is not a list.He has created a journey, based on real experiences, that actually engages the reader and enables a level of understanding that I never thought I would attain with regard to a subject about which I had formerly known nothing.
It is a story; a real life story. There are parts that I personally find awkward because they take me back to the day of that first phone call, but to others, those same parts put the reader in the mind of the stroke survivor. That's uncommon to find and, for the survivor and their friends and family, very useful information.
He has done a fantastic job with this effort. He set out to create something that would help countless others and give them a head start on their road to recovery, while at the same time providing their friends and family an insight into what their loved one is truly experiencing. He has done all of that.He has done that in a big way.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I read this book!
I read this book on a suggestion of a friend,It gave to me a gift of Hope, humility and humor.Michael has shown that when something this bad happens;if one does not give up, chances of comming out the other side intact and a stronger person for it are much better. I GIVE THIS BOOK TWO THUMS UP!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book.A source of information and strength to all especially caregivers and stroke victims.
A friend recommended the book `Stranger in the Mirror' by Michael E Little to me.I am very glad and thankful to my friend. The book is absolutely brilliant. This is a gripping story of the author himself, of how he survived a massive stroke and brain hemorrhage with his sanity and sense of humor intact. The subject matter of the book relates to a `real life' occurrence, which both sounds and is some-what depressing. However this marvelous book is wonderful, is full of solutions and definitely not depressing. This little wonder was an absolute treat to read. After going through the first few pages, I could not put it down! The book is all about adjusting to the real time challenges of this new situation and life.It displays renewed hope, strength and character of a young man and I found no trace of self pity and remorse. In fact, the author seems determined to give his readers hope for their own future. This little gem is busting with humor and wisdom, unlike anything in my experience.

This book is so dead honest that parts of it made me squirm with embarrassment at the author's predicament and how to handle it.Delicious! This book surprised me and made me laugh out loud at times. The author's humor is sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle, but through this terrible experience he manages to keep his prospective and find humor in his life-shattering tragedy.I suspect his prospective is a product of his combat experience in Viet Nam, strength of character and his will to survive and make the most of `life's challenges.I can only hope I show the same grace and élan if tragedy ever befalls me.

Stranger in the Mirror surprised, delighted and inspired me!I absolutely loved it and recommend it to everyone, whether or not they are handicapped.I especially recommend for inclusion in public libraries and to friends and caregivers of family of stoke victims. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best FAS/FAE book on the market
Where do I start? When I first received this book, out of habit I started to highlight the important areas, as they related to me, and my family. After about 30 pages, I looked back to see that EVERYTHING was highlighted. No FAS book has been able to pin point my son to the T, as this book. While reading, I felt for the first time, that someone understood what it is really like. My family and I can now see into the future for our son. Befor this book arrived my days/and his were hopeless. No longer am I crying myself to sleep, or regreating our wonderful adoption. MY SON HAS FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME, AND I WILL SURVIVE!!!! Thank you Jodee for taking the time out to write such a perfect book. We will forever be grateful to you and your family.

5-0 out of 5 stars My go-to book!
I've had my spiral-bound copy many years, its well-worn much like the Velveteen Rabbit. My daughter with FAS is now almost 14, lower functioning than Liz. I learned a lot about the brain, practical teaching ideas, nutrition, sensory integration & emotional regulation techniques. They helped, and gave me hope, to weather the past crisises and craziness. I've avoided meds so far, for both of us:) Now, as a teen she is no longer hyper, has more language, can wait, agree to contingencies and we're very bonded... so for now things are good. I never found other books with so many suggestions and easy to understand practical info. Thanks for this bible of FASD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Journey
This is a great book. I would reccomend it to anyone whom lives with FASD.
Full of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars FAScinating Journey- a Guidebook
Jodee Kulp's book "Our FAScinating Journey" is a wonderful resource for every family that is touched by FASD.Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders has been around as long as alcohol has, but as an identified syndrome it is really in its infancy. There are not well worn paths that parents like me can follow and I appreciate the great lengths that Jodee went to in documenting the various therapies, strategies and teaching methods that they used in their home.

The second page of the books states, "Karl, Liz and I cannot give you answers for the person you love with prenatal brain injury.Every person is different. We can, however, share with you our journey."Their journey made a path where there was none and I am thankful for that.

This book should not be viewed as a "one time read" but rather as a resource manual that may be read in parts and reviewed as needed. It may be that a family implements only a few of the ideas in the book and I believe that, given the layout of the book, it was the author's intent to give the reader that choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Concerning, all over the place and disorganized
I immediately found the page design of this book disturbing. There are blurbs and comments all over the margins, and bits of story and anecdotes without any explanation. It is a real ADD kind of lay out, and made the book as a whole rather difficult to read. The book could have benefitted from a real editor.
Going forward, there were a wide assortment of assertions in the book which were plain old opinion- there is not a lot of support for some of the declarations about learning, supplements, and even what FAS is.It appeared that the author often attributed to FAS behaviors which have every appearance of actually being manifestations of BiPolar. The various interventions the family experiemented with seemed spur of the moment, and not terribly effective. It is also concerning that the family has encouraged the child to become a sort of poster child for FAS, with what impact on her privacy?
I can only hope that there are better resources out there for families who need solid, science based and effective interventions for kids with fetal alcohol effects. ... Read more

Product Description
Behavioral dyscontrol is arguably the most difficult issue to address when treating a person with brain injury. Contingency management, insight acquisition, and skill building are excellent methods, but these traditional approaches often fail to rehabilitate patients with severe behavioral problems. Are they destined for institutionalization, or is there a treatment that will let them resume their lives as active members of the community? Neuropsychosocial Intervention: The Practical Treatment of Severe Behavioral Dyscontrol after Acquired Brain Injury describes an innovative, clinically proven methodology based on over 20 years of clinical work with persons with brain injury. Neuropsychosocial treatment is an environmental intervention that focuses on the behavior of the people whom persons with brain injury encounter and the physical environment that they inhabit. It encourages therapists to create an environment for each patient after examining neurological, cognitive, adjustment, and environmental variables. This book outlines the nature and significance of behavioral dyscontrol, explains aggression, and details the neuropsychosocial treatment approach and the principles on which it is based. Providing numerous case vignettes, it demonstrates that even persons with brain injury who have severe behavioral problems can succeed with amazing results. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for the professional
This book is a great reference for professional staff who work on a brain injury treatment unit ... IF they have a position which allows some ability to impact on other staff. The behavior management suggestions are practical and helpful.Again, however, they require the ability to gain cooperation from all the staff, so this book will not be terribly helpful to a clinical staff person looking for practical suggestions for managing behaviors of specific individuals in their daily work. ...
