Product Description
The Association's 2004 conference focused mainly on the architecture and archaeology of the medieval diocese of Llandaff, comprising much of the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Contributors consider Roman and early medieval south-east Wales, including surviving Christian monuments and the early history of Cardiff. There is a detailed analysis of the c. 1200 wall-paintings at the priory church of Ewenny, where ambitious decorative work replaced a hitherto unknown Romanesque scheme. The early Gothic architecture of Llandaff Cathedral is shown to be related to some of the great contemporary ecclesiastical works in England and elsewhere, such as Glastonbury Abbey, and the unusual form of the cloister arcade at Tintern Abbey is analysed. Other papers cover the late Gothic architecture in south Wales, two 14th-century tomb monuments at Abergavenny, and a study of the magnificent carpentry of a number of late medieval rood-screens that survive in parish churches. The volume concludes with an account of the evidence for post-medieval work in churches in the diocese. ... Read more

Product Description
The Association's 2001 conference was held in Carlisle and concentrated on the Roman and medieval art, architecture and archaeology of the city and county. Under the Romans, and with its position on Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle had the distinction of being the most north-westerly centre of `Romanitas' in a vast empire. Later, the castle-building programme, initiated under William II, the establishment of the priory in 1123, followed by the See in 1133, marked Carlisle out as a key strategic bulwark against an ever-present threat from the Scots. The majority of papers at the conference and in this volume focus on the cathedral, various aspects of its architectural development, the wonderful east window and its stained glass, the fine medieval woodwork and extraordinary paintings on the backs of the choir stalls and the ceiling of the Prior's Tower. The castle and other important churches and monastic sites in Cumbria were also examined, along with the Bishop's residence at Rose Castle, and an appreciation of the work of that distinguished cleric, Dean Tait. This volume will go a long way towards providing future generations of scholars with a firm baseline for future research in this area. ... Read more

Product Description
This lavishly illustrated volume, the transactions of a conference held in the summer of 1999, reviews religious activity at St Albans from the Iron Age until the end of the Middle Ages. For most of the Roman period Verulamium was a major pagan sanctuary, but in Christian times the focus of cult shifted to the site of the later church where it was associated with a Romano-British martyr. New evidence considered here ranges from the Biddles' epoch-making excavation of the Roman cemetery on the abbey site to a sensational new reconstruction of the early 5th century Passion of Alban by Richard Sharpe. Many contributions review the fabric and fittings of the medieval abbey. Studies of the former include papers on the re-use of Roman building materials in the Middle Ages, the Romanesque sculpture of St Albans and its environs, the lost 13th century west front, the Gothic reconstruction of the nave and presbytery and the 14th century timber roof of the central tower. Essays on the fittings of the church include a detailed investigation of a Coptic cross depicted by Matthew Paris and papers on the 12th century Purbeck-marble shrine table, the 15th century chantry of Duke Humphrey, and the magnificent great screen of the abbey. The historical aspects of research into St Albans also receive attention and there are papers on subjects as diverse as the late Saxon belief that King Offa refounded the abbey and the attempts of the monks to promote the cult of St Alban in the late Middle Ages, attempts whose tangible results at a popular level are reflected by pilgrim badges of St Alban found at London and elsewhere. Future research into the protomartyr of Britain as well as many other aspects of St Albans' history, archaeology and art will have to start with this volume. ... Read more

Product Description
Project Paphlagonia was a multi-period, large-scale programme of regional survey in north-central Turkey, today the provinces of Cankiri and parts of Karabuk, previously a little explored region. In total, an area of almost 8,500km2 was surveyed between 1997 and 2001, using both extensive and intensive survey techniques. More than 330 sites of archaeological and historical significance were located and recorded. The sites range in date from early prehistoric to Ottoman, and include Palaeolithic camp-sites, Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age settlements and cemeteries, fortified defensive sites of the Hittite and other periods, Phrygian villages and burial tumuli, and a wealth of small towns, villages, farmsteads and hill-top refuges of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and early Turkish periods. This volume, to be used in conjunction with the Project Paphlagonia website, presents synthetic treatments of all these periods as well as studies of the geology, geomorphology and climatology of the region. Studies of long-term settlement, trends and patterns complete this publication of an important and productive programme of archaeological and historical survey. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Color Cover, B&W photos inside
It's a small (8" x 6.5"), thin (63 pps.) book; there's a 3 page glossary, an index and bibliography. The cover shows a color photo of a mosaic and I certainly expected the same inside. While there are plenty of photos of mosaics, every one of them is black & white. It's difficult to see details (since the photos are small to begin with).

It almost seems like someone's idea of a bad joke: to photograph gorgeous intricately colored mosaics in b&w.The accompanying text gives a brief history of mosaics in Britain as well as information about individual panels. However, the photos are all but worthless as far as I'm concerned. Terribly disappointing, obviously.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Than the Sum of Its Parts
The most famous Roman mosaics are probably those of Pompeii and Herculaneum; in the Roman Empire at large, the mosaics of the Byzantine Empire and Near East (e.g., modern-day Syria) come to mind. However, the the artistic and cultural influences of Rome and the Near East extend to the western reaches of the Empire as well. In fact, the cover photograph of the magnificent Orpheus Mosaic at Littlecote Park (Wiltshire) well illustrates these Near Eastern influences.

As with other titles in the venerable Shire Archaeology series, this book offers the general reader a short but reasonably detailed introduction to the many beautiful mosaics that have been found and preserved in England.Author Peter Johnson starts out with the design and construction of mosaics, as well as the materials used.Subsequent chapters discuss the First Century beginnings, Second Century expansion, Third Century collapse, and Fourth Century revival (when many villas were decorated with beautifully crafted mosaics), followed by a listing of important collections of or individual mosaics throughout Britain.

As an introduction to the subject of Romano-British mosaics, Dr. Johnson does a remarkable job in just highly readable 64 pages.Anyone wishing to find further information might wish to consult one of the more detailed books on the subject, most notably "Roman Mosaics in Britain" by David S. Neal Roman Mosaics in Britain, or the works of Patricia Witts Mosaics in Roman Britain: Stories in Stone (Revealing History), Margaret Rule Floor Mosaics in Roman Britain, or Anne Rainey Mosaics in Roman Britain. ... Product Description

This book analyses British action in the Southern hemisphere in the late 18th century, examining two Royal Navy ships, one off the Argentinean coast and one off the Southeast Australian coast. The author goes beyond a descriptive analysis of wrecks by treating them and their cargoes as embodiments of 18th century social relations. The book challenges traditional approaches, providing a perspective that emphasises the richness, diversity and complexity of British action.

Product Description
The fourteen papers collected in this volume explore the medieval art, architecture and archaeology of Kings Lynn and the Fens. They arise out of the Associations 2005 conference, and reflect its concern to engage with a broad range of monuments and themes, rather than focusing on a single major building. Within Kings Lynn contributors consider the superb 14th-century enamelled drinking vessel popularly known as King Johns Cup, the former Hanseatic Steelyard, the Red Mount Chapel, and the oak furnishings of the chapel of St Nicholas, while the pine standard chest from St Margarets church is assessed in terms of the importation and distribution of similar chest across England as a whole. Outside Kings Lynn there are articles on the historical manipulation of landscapes and buildings at Kirkstead, the 13th-century architecture and sculpture of Croyland Abbey, the 14th-century parish church of St Mary at Snettisham, the tomb of Sir Humphrey de Littlebury at All Saints, Holbeach, the overlooked medieval wall paintings in the Priors Chapel at Castle Acre, and the late medieval stained glass at Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalen. Finally, there are three papers that look at particular aspects of the ways in which parish churches were financed, embellished and used across the region in terms of late-12th and early-13th-century patronage, their 12th-century deployment of architectural sculpture, and the types and arrangements of choir stalls that appeared at a parochial level during the later Middle Ages. ...
