Good quality product and delivered promptly. We had to order the access code separately for full "online" usage, which added another $20 to the total cost.Whether or not this "key" was included was not clear in the original posting so I knew I was taking a chance.Still, that was not difficult, and even with the additional expense, still a good deal compared to university bookstore prices.

Product Description
The Longman Anthology of British Literature, Compact Edition is a concise and thoughtfully arranged survey of British literature for the one-semester course. Within its pages, canonical authors mingle with newly visible writers; English accents are heard next to Anglo-Norman, Welsh, Gaelic, and Scottish ones; female and male voices are set in dialogue; literature from the British Isles is integrated with post-colonial writing; and major works are illumined by clusters of shorter texts that bring literary, social, and historical issues vividly to life. The Second Edition builds on the pioneering features of its predecessor, retaining a strong core of frequently taught works while continuing to lead the way in responding to the shifting interests of the discipline. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent anthology with many uses
This is an excellent anthology, with generous selections, lively introductions, and beautifully reproduced color plates.Though published on "bible paper," there is very little bleed-through.It is an splendid alternative to the Norton Anthology, not only for its ample contexts sections and for its loving attention to both canonical and new writers (especially women writers of the Renaissance), but also for its favoring of complete works--More's Utopia, Sidney's Apology, etc.I've been using IB this semester, and though there are, as the (I think excessively) negative reviewer notes below, occasional errors, these are not unusual in massive endeavors. An old game in the 1950s used to be to send grad students in search of errors and typos in the standard literary critical books of the day. I'm sure these will be cleaned up.For now the book works especially well for "survey" courses and for upper-level, specialized courses, when supplemented by another paperback or two, or course packets. ... Responding to major shifts in literary studies over the past thirty years, The Longman Anthology of British LIterature was the first collection to pay sustained attention to the contexts within which literature is produced, even as it broadened the scope of that literature to embrace the full cultural diversity of the British Isles. Volume 2B focuses on the literature of the Victorian Age. ... The Longman Anthology of British Literature - 2B / 0-321-10669-5

Anthologies are usually either purchased because they are required reading for school or because the purchaser would like to round out a private library with worthwhile literary selections. This review is written predominantly to help the latter in their purchasing decision.

This anthology belongs to the three-volume set of The Longman Anthology of British Literature (Volumes 2A, 2B, 2C). Each volume contains gorgeous color plates of contemporary artwork and portraits. The authors are arranged not only by the dates they represent, but also by the causes that they provide perspective on. This arrangement makes the literary selections more meaningful when read as a group, and provides a great deal of insight on pertinent issues which influenced the authors' writings. This arrangement does mean, however, that many selections are scattered throughout the work, so if you wish to read all the selections by, say, Charles Dickens, you will have to wade through the index to find all the places his writings are located. All in all, the organization is a good one, unless you specifically prefer having all the writings of an author located in the same place, in which case another anthology might be best - perhaps the Norton anthologies.

The authors represented in this volume are:
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson
- Arnold, Matthew
- Ashford, Daisy
- Beerbohm, Max
- Beeton, Isabella
- Belloc, Hilaire
- Bird, Isabella
- Bronte, Anne
- Bronte, Charlotte

Product Description
In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations throughout, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, offering additional perspectives both on individual texts and on larger social and cultural developments. Innovative, authoritative, and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature embodies a consistently fresh approach to the study of literature and literary history. The six individual bound volumes are also available in any combination at special package prices.

Highlights of Volume 2: The Renaissance and the Early Seventeenth Century include: a new approach to King Lear (the anthology presents not only the full Folio version but also three key scenes in parallel-column format, allowing students to understand how the textual issues involving Quarto and Folio versions may substantially affect larger issues of meaning). ... A fresh approach to the study of Romantic Literature edited by scholars in the field.  This volume presents extensive selections from a wide range of underrepresented female writers like Mary Wollstonecraft, Dorothy Wordsworth, and Mary Robinson.  “Perspectives” sections shed light on the period as a whole.  Examples include a “Perspectives” section on “The Wollstonecraft Controversy and the Rights of Women” and on “Popular Prose and the Problems of Authorship”

4-0 out of 5 stars Great anthology
The Longman Anthology of Romantic Literature is an excellent resource for anyone studying Romantic Lit authors, themes and influences. With its short biographies of each author, it provides a manageable sampling of each author's writings and style. It also features helpful articles in a topical arrangement, surrounding popular works such as Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman."

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid anthology, overkill on footnotes
I teach from the Norton and the Longman; I've even toyed with using the Broadview.I respect the Longman's inclusion of non-canonical texts, and I find their introductions useful and interesting.I can say the same of the other major anthology producers, however.I switched to the Longman a few years ago because Longman British v2(C) included Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine, which is a great, if somewhat controversial, text to teach in the second British survey. Then they dropped it, but I stuck with it because, well, my notes were in it.

One thing that has bothered me over the years, however, is that the footnotes go beyond historical context and veer annoyingly toward interpretation. I prefer to do the interpretation with my students.Frankly, this move toward interpretive footnotes has infected some of the Norton Critical Editions, too, but I haven't noticed it as much with the anthology.

The other annoying thing about the Longman is the frequency with which they update. This would seem like a strength, but we all know it's to force students to buy new editions rather than used. They review and revise twice as frequently as the Norton.Worth considering when you have to copy all those notes from one book to another every three years instead of every six....

I got this book for an English Romanticism class, and apart from assigned readings by the teacher, the book also has biographies of the poets and writers -- really interesting read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great anthology!
I'm using the Longman Anthology of the Romantics and their Contemporaries (3d edition) for the first time in my 3d-year Romantics course (enrolment 88 and counting!) -- I would like to thank the editors for doing a fantastic job -- the introductory essay (pp. 3-29) is truly unparallelled for clarity, scope, and intelligence -- absolutely filled to the brim with great, challenging ideas. The headnotes provide a meaningful, detailed historical background. Excellent, well annotated selections -- the notes are great too -- not condescending, not entirely ruled by the editors' obsessions, finely articulated. What a sane, sensible, well balanced, erudite anthology!Congratulations andthank you ! ... Product Description

This trenchant book argues that the cultural attempt to erase class during the period from Margaret Thatcher to Tony Blair has only generated its return as a troubling subterranean element in British literature and theory. Driscoll critiques the way postmodern theory idealizes contemporary British literature as a space of fluid, flexible decentered subjects, arguing that beneath this ideology are clear evasions of class. Offering critical readings of canonized middle-class authors from Martin Amis to Graham Swift, Driscoll makes the compelling argument that the contemporary British novel, assisted by "class blind" postmodern literary theory consistently works to control the problem of class.
