Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A web feed (or news feed) is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an aggregator. A web feed is also sometimes referred to as a syndicated feed.A typical scenario of web feed use is: a content provider publishes a feed link on their site which end users can register with an aggregator program (also called a feed reader or a news reader) running on their own machines; doing this is usually as simple as dragging the link from the web browser to the aggregator. When instructed, the aggregator asks all the servers in its feed list if they have new content; if so, the aggregator either makes a note of the new content or downloads it. Aggregators can be scheduled to check for new content periodically. Web feeds are an example of pull technology, although they may appear to push content to the user. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great potential!
I would give this book 5 stars, but the material needs to be updated. I have used this book twice for teaching our third year undergraduate course on Web technologies. I like the philosophy of the book, which is 1) to present a single coherent stream of technologies, rather than presenting a large collection of technologies that are more or less equivalent, and 2)to present the fundamental concepts of the Web so that students are well equipped to understand future technologies. The book presents Java-based server-side technologies, which suites our curriculum very well since we are using Java for most of our programming courses, and it also has a good coverage of XML technologies. The author provides numerous references to the relevant RFCs and authoritative documents. The book could be improved by adding more elements of design so that the students better understand the role of these technologies in developing large real-world Web applications. But most importantly, the book needs to be updated to cover the current Web standards. In particular, the Java-based Web services have evolved substantially since the publication of the book. HTML5 is evolving in interesting directions, and should be covered in the textbook. A chapter of JavaServer Faces would be a nice addition. Finally, although most of the textbook presents clear explanations of the concepts, some sections would benefit from the polishing that a second edition would bring. For me, the book is reaching its end of life, but unfortunately, I am not aware of any other textbook with "a computer science perspective" of Web technologies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whirlwind Tour with Case Study (blog), Code Examples and Relevant References
I used this book in my web applications class. This is a great introductory book for those who are tired of design-centric, saccharine, "let's make pretty pages" category of HTML books. If you are an aspiring developer, you need to know more than a mark-up language. This book gives you a working definition of XHTML, and then moves on to the real meat of the web: the technologies that drive real-world web pages; that is, JavaScript, XML, JSP, etc. Of course there are analogs to those listed above. PHP, for one. The author does not argue for "one true technology set." He presents the material so that, if you were to learn PHP instead of JavaScript, it would be a smooth integration to what you already learned.

There is also an appendix explaining how to set up a server, etc. All in all, one of the best dev-centric books on web programming - not just a book of tags! - that I've seen. :) ... Read more

Cravens and James have written this book for the relativebeginner who needs to produce a Web site on the fly. It guides thereader though the strategy and execution of Web-site creation usingNetscape tools, with a major emphasis on NetObjects Fusion PE. Thissoftware is designed to be a Web-site creation and maintenance toolrather than a tool for individual pages. It's an approach the authorsheartily approve of, and they encourage readers to think in broadterms, considering their entire site as a unit rather than as just acollection of various pages.

Since the book has beginners in mind,it opens with a section on getting started with the Netscape programs, including installation and understanding the Net. The five chapters ofpart 2 introduce the components of Netscape Communicator 4. Part 3 isdevoted to getting the reader up to speed on NetObjects Fusion PE,with discussions on planning a site, creating content, and simplifyingsite management by automating processes with Fusion tools. Part 4provides a concise course in adding interactivity to a site. Thecompanion CD-ROM offers a variety of sample Web sites, utilities, andtools. --Elizabeth Lewis ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can what you like of the enclosed review, Ruth Mountaing
[NDN Logo] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hybrid HTML Design by Jean Warner and Kevin Ready New Riders Publishing, 1996, 412 pages, paperback, $35.00 by Ruth Mountaingrove You've just put your web page on Netscape and it looks beautiful. But have you checked it out on America on Line or Compuserve? Yeech! What has happened to your beautiful design? Where have the buttons gone? Why is everything on the left side or in a straight line with no breaks? Why has the picture you put in changed to that size? Where are the frames? The answers to these questions and the solutions, as much as is possible, are in the book Hybrid HTML Design. Here you will learn what tags to use to accommodate not only Netscape which is probably the most complex and developed browser but you will also be able to make it possible for aol'ers and other more primitive browsers to enjoy your work. HTML is the abbreviation for HyperTextMarkup Language. A feature I like very much is the step by step explanations with photographs of browsers showing you what each browser will do to your web page. The HTML document behind each page is printed out. Tags are explained. Browsers that don't recognize HTML tags are illustrated with photographs showing what that looks like. Not pretty. The browsers dealt with are Netscape Navigator 2 and 3, Internet Explorer 2, Oracle Power Browser 1, Hot Java Alpha 1, NCSA Mosaic 2, Compuserve Spry Mosaic, America On-line 2.4, Prodigy, Cyberdog, PointCast, the Lynx browser and others. While you may be tempted, as I was, to buy PageMill 1, I realized as soon as I got it that I still needed to learn some HTML because PageMill is limited, They admit this in their user guide which accompanies the disk. The book also deals with server issues assuming of course you want to be your own server. This implies that you are doing a lot of web work and need your own space on the net. Accompanying the book is a Hybrid HTML Design CD-ROM with Gif Builder, Debabelizer lite, Plug-ins including Shockwave for Freehand, and Director, Crescendo, Future Splash, Photo Bubbles. There is also Microsoft Internet Explorer. Also included are demos of the Oracle Power Browser, Micromedia Director 5, and Shockwave. Shareware of BBedit, BBedit lite, World Wide Web Weaver, Adobe PageMill 1 and HTML Assistant Pro 2. Demos, meaning you can play but not save. In addition there are Adobe PhotoShop 3.05, Illustrator 6, Fetch 1.2, Premier 4.0.1, PageMaker 6 and much more, like conversion programs, and lots more information on Hybrid HTML Design. The book and CD-Rom are an excellent combination. The demos make it possible to have hands-on experience before buying expensive software. Janine Warner and Kevin Reading have created a well thought out tool for the webster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ruth Mountaingrove is an avid computer user, teacher of Senior Citzens, writer for Senior News and creator of her own web site: Web Page of a 74 Year Old Woman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Digital News Update * Redwood Country Update * Battling Scientology: Interview with Grady Ward * Back Issues ... Hacks is a highly recommended book to anyone who uses Yahoo or wants to know how to really master it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get The Most Out Of Your Yahoo! Experience!
When Yahoo! was created in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo it was the simplest of web sites.Just a collection of web pages laid out in a simple unordered list, the entire Yahoo! web site was only a handful of pages with only a single, simple use: to list sites on the web separated out by the content they provided.Probably when someone today thinks of Yahoo! the first thing they think of is that it is a search engine.Well the 1st generation of the Yahoo! web site didn't even have that. There wasn't even a form field present, the only thing being a bunch of hyperlinks which navigated to more hyperlinks for the few sites that were in existence back in the day.

My what changes a decade brings.

When you think of the Internet today, probably the first couple of web sites that come to mind are eBay, Google, amazon and Yahoo!.It is safe to say that with thousands of employees and millions upon millions of revenue that Yahoo! is one of the greatest success stories on the web, and to think that only 10+ years ago this site was just a simple list that grew into so much more.Yahoo! has evolved to not only provide a way of searching the Internet, but it is now a portal site that provides News, Weather, Sports, Games... basically if you can think of something that you can find on the Internet then Yahoo! is a great place to go to start your web experience. There is so much to do and so many places to go when you use Yahoo! that it can become mind-boggling and that is where "Yahoo! Hacks" can be used to make your net experience the best it can be.

Providing 100 tips and tricks of how to best use Yahoo! to your advantage, Paul Bausch pulls no punches and doesn't skimp on the details. From learning how to use and customize 'My Yahoo!' to setting up and controlling your mail to setting your own personal TV listings, you can learn how to do this with this guide. From tracking your investments to created advanced searches that remember personalized settings to installing Yahoo! Messenger, you will learn the ins and outs with this book. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to discussing all that Yahoo! Hacks has to offer.RSS, blogging, Calendar, sharing photos... the list goes on and on.

After reading Yahoo! Hacks you will soon feel like there is so much to offer from Yahoo! that you could do everything you needed to at one web site and never have to go anywhere else! Now with this guide you can get the most out of your Yahoo! experience and have fun while doing it.

This is what Hack books are supposed to be about!!For all Yahoo! enthusiasts out there who want to learn how to use Yahoo! to the fullest, this is the book for you!!

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not dead yet!
"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."That quote might apply to Yahoo when you look at all the mindshare that Google has garnered of late. It's almost as if Yahoo is irrelevant and Google owns the search world. Not quite, and Paul Bausch's new book Yahoo! Hacks - Tips & Tools for Living on the Web Frontier reminded me of all the good and incredibly valuable things you can do with Yahoo...

Contents:Search; Services; Communicating; Web Services; Applications; Webmastering; Index

Like all Hacks titles, you have a number of cool tips and tricks that you can do using Yahoo as your technology starting point. In this case, there's 100 of them that cover a wide range of topics. For instance, tip #39 - Monitor Your Commute shows how Yahoo can provide updated traffic conditions overlaying a map of your driving commute.Even better, those traffic updates can be formatted in RSS and put on your My Yahoo page.I did that one right away.Tip #83 - Randomize Your Windows Desktop Background shows how, using Yahoo's web services API and some VBA code, you can create a random Windows wallpaper each day.Just hope you don't choose a search term that isn't "work safe".:)The whole Web Services chapter shows how you can access Yahoo's API using a variety of languages such as Perl, PHP, Python and a few others.Once you get the basic core structure down, you open up a whole universe of possibilities in terms of programmatic integration of Yahoo into your applications. This is really cool stuff...

I've been just as guilty as the next person of getting all "Google"-y eye'd at other search engines and forgetting the site that opened up a whole world of internet realities. Many of the things we take for granted now were ground-breaking ideas that Yahoo was pushing in the early days.Having two strong competitors in the search arena will lead to even more innovative thinking as they play off of each other.I can see how the Yahoo! Hacks title could go into multiple editions without even trying...

Excellent read with lots of code you can use immediately. If you've wandered away from Yahoo for other pastures, perhaps it's time to wander back and see what other options are out there.Yahoo Hacks will expand your thinking as to what you can do with search engines... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Rip-off!It's just Wikipedia printed on paper.
From what I've seen on amazon, these editors seem to specialize in just printing out Wikipedia sections and charging high prices for them, while concealing the fact that the "book" is just Wikipedia articles.Click on any of the "editors" names to search for all the "books" they've edited that are available here, and you'll see what I mean.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning
Alphascript Publishing has a big published about 40 000 "books" that are nothing more than a collection of Wikipedia articles. The books retail for between $40 and $100. This is a big price for something that is available for free. Shame on Amazon for stocking them. Often the cover picture does not even match the subject.

This book provides in depth coverage of browser components, threading, garbage collection, memory model etc. And thus facilitates the process of replacing legacy presentation-tier on server with client-tier(JavaScript) in browser. This boook covers css parsing, html parsing, rendering, layout, javascript interaction etc.

This book can be used while creating Rich Internet Applications which pull coarse grained data with services in cloud[-computing]. Although, there are various sections with low level details which I skipped and may be good read for somebody trying to embed/develop browsers.

This book has concise and crisp coverage of inner workings of Firefox components of gecko, spidermonkey, tracemonkey etc. For example how DOM Objects as scriptable XPCOM objects interacts with Javascript using XPConnect. This book details Chrome and Safari's Webkit components of WebCore, JavaScriptCore, V8. This book provides insight into how IE 9 Javascript compiler (Chakra) compiles JavaScript source code into high-quality native machine code etc.

Product Description
Browser wars is a metaphorical term that refers to competitions for dominance in the web browser marketplace. The term is often used to denote two specific rivalries: the competition that saw Microsoft's Internet Explorer replace Netscape's Navigator as the dominant browser during the late 1990s and the erosion of Internet Explorer's market share since 2003 by a collection of emerging browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, and Opera. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Epiphany is a web browser for the GNOME graphical computing desktop. The browser is a descendant of Galeon, and was created after disagreements about Galeon's target audience.Epiphany was developed from Galeon by Marco Pesenti Gritti, who was also the initiator of Galeon, with the aim of making a web browser that would be fully compliant with the GNOME human interface guidelines and that would have a very simple user experience. As a result, Epiphany does not have its own theme settings - it uses GNOME's settings, which are specified in the GNOME Control Center. ... Read more

Product Description
K-Meleon is a web browser for the Microsoft Windows platform. Based on the same Gecko layout engine as Mozilla Firefox, K-Meleon uses native Windows API to create the user interface, and as a result, is tightly integrated into the look and feel of the Windows desktop; this approach is similar to that of Galeon and Epiphany, and Camino. This also makes K-Meleon less resource-intensive and more responsive to user input. ... Read more
