5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate book on the Buffalo Soldiers 1866-1917
This is the first complete and historical complimation on the services of the black soldiers from 1866 to 1917 and the officers who lead them. It records their deeds, names and honor. It pulls no punches about racisim and the occasional soldier who did wrong. Unlike many works on the subject it has detailed sources that are provided allowing even deeper research when needed.

I would have liked to see more detailed documentation and explanations on the attempts to disband black units from 1910 to 1917 lead by the Progressive parties in America. These "policies" from President Wilson downward forced many black soldiers as manual laborers and other black fighting units to be excluded from fighting with other American units in 1918.

I would have liked to see this work extended into 1920 dealing with the two black regiments who served under the French and those few black soldiers who went to Russia in 1918-1920.

This is the ultimate book on the Buffalo Soldiers for the time period covered.

Hopefully there will be a 1917-1956 work covering World War 1, the interm years, World War 2 and Korea. Too many know little about the black soldiers who served with the French, the World War 2 paratroopers who became the first "smokejumpers" fighting against the Japanese ballon bombs, and the efforts to intergrate blacks starting in 1946 that took ten years to complete.

The only drawback is its cost limiting it as a reference book and in special collections. ... Read more

Product Description
African-American soldiers played a decisive role in the US Army on the western frontier during the Plains Wars. First authorised by Congress in July 1866, they were organised into two cavalry and four infantry regiments, which were commanded by white officers. All were quickly nicknamed the 'Buffalo Soldiers' by their Cheyenne and Comanche enemies. These brave soldiers fought many native tribes over the years, including the warriors of Sitting Bull and Geronimo. This book tells the story of these buffalo soldiers who, until the early 1890s, constituted 20 per cent of all active forces on duty in the American West. ... Read more

Product Description
On the American frontier, African American units of the U.S. Army--nicknamed "Buffalo Soldiers" by their Indian opponents--were renowned for their fortitude, courage, and ability to handle difficult assignments.Despite such respect in the military, by the end of the nineteenth century Black civilians were still being subjected to Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and continuous discrimination. At this same time newspapers were reporting glowing accounts of the heroism of four Black regiments during the Spanish-American War.

In an effort to bolster Black pride and stem the increasing racism of the age, Dr. T.G. Steward (1843-1924), chaplain of the U.S. Army's Twenty-fifth Infantry, requested and received permission from the army to publish this fascinating account of the Black soldier's military service in Cuba. After summarizing the African American contribution to all of the wars and conflicts leading up to the Spanish-American War, Steward concentrates on the war in Cuba.Among the intriguing episodes recounted are the rescue of the Rough Riders led by Theodore Roosevelt, the capture of the stone fort at El Caney, the service of the Black infantrymen as volunteer nurses in the yellow fever camps, and long excerpts from the diary of Medal of Honor winner E.L. Baker of the Tenth Cavalry.

Enhanced by an extensive foreword from Frank N. Schubert, former chief of Joint Operational History for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and an expert on the Buffalo Soldiers, this work remains a model of careful narrative history and still the single best source of information on the role of the Black soldiers in the war against Spain. ... Product Description
While countless works have been written on the role of the US Army in the Old West, only recently has attention been focused on the role of African-American soldiers who made up nearly one-fifth of the cavalry and one-tenth of the total US Army in the West during the last quarter of the 19th century. These soldiers served in four regiments: the Ninth and Tenth cavalry and the twenty-forth and twenty-fifth infantry. In a uniques move, Congress assigned a chaplin to each balck regiment primarily to serve as teacher for the mostly illiterate new recruits. Alan Lamm explores the contributions of these chaplains in the context of the regiments in which they served. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting look at a overlooked subject.
Lamm's work covers an overlooked area of history and black religion. His style is clear, lively, in-depth, informative, and easy to read. This book will appeal to both historians and nonprofessionals interested in the 19thcentury U.S. Army, African American history, and Black church history. Lamm helps bring to life the story of five black clergymen, four of whomwere former slaves, who rose up from slavery and oppression to becomeofficers and gentlemen in the nation's armed forces. He demonstrates notonly their on personal struggle with prejudice and racism, but also theirstruggle to fight for the rights of blacks in Jim Crow America. Each manwas unique, yet Lamm ties all five together in a way that brings cohesionto the book. This work fills a void that has long been overlooked byhistorians and is a worthy addition to anyone's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How the west was really won
This was required reading for a graduate course in the history of American military affairs. The activities of the frontier army were indeed vast, and the types of people that lived on the frontier forts were just as diverse. This essay will now shift its focus to the diverse range of people that lived on the nineteenth-century frontier, and it will analyze some of the literature that focuses on the lives of these people.Frank Schubert's Buffalo Soldiers, Braves, and the Brass:The Story of Fort Robinson, Nebraska offers a unique glimpse into the social configuration of the American West.Schubert uses Fort Robinson as an example of an average fort community, and he argues there were three separate components within this community.According to Schubert, the fort community included "officers with their wives and children, married enlisted men and their families, and the single men in the barracks."His work explores the lives of each group, giving the reader an understanding of the experiences of all classes of frontier soldiers.Schubert also points out that Fort Robinson was unique because it was home to many enlisted African-American men; therefore, "race relations formed a significant part of the post's history."He maintains that African-American enlisted men and their families faced struggles on the frontier their white counterparts did not, namely discrimination.Schubert's work is useful because it introduces the reader to the experiences of different kinds of people on the nineteenth-century frontier.
Schubert explores the experiences of women during westward expansion, and discusses some of the issues that specifically touched the lives of frontier women. For example, he maintains that women formed "small, tightly knit societies" on the frontier, and he explains they used "feminine tasks....-cooking, sewing, visiting, and talking-to pass most of the hours, weeks, and even years."He also spends some time discussing childbirth, courting, and childrearing, all of which were relevant to women's lives on the frontier. He surveys the lives of women ranging from officers' wives to laundresses, which presents an all encompassing view of nineteenth-century frontier women.

Recommended reading for anyone interested in military history, and American history.

They were U.S. Army soldiers. Just a few years earlier, some had been slaves. Several thousand African Americans served as soldiers in the Indian Wars and in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish-American War in the latter part of the 19th century. They were known as buffalo soldiers, believed to have been named by Indians who had seen a similarity between the coarse hair and dark skin of the soldiers and the coats of the buffalo. Twenty-three of these men won the nation's highest award for personal bravery, the Medal of Honor. Black Valor brings the lives of these soldiers into sharp focus. Their remarkable stories are told in the collected biography. Derived from extensive historical research, Black Valor will enrich and inspire readers with its tales of trials and courage. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Buffalo Best
Many works have been penned on the Buffalo Soldiers, however, few reach the quality of Dr. Schubert's.Frank tells the story of the Buffalo Soldier Medal of Honor winners from 1870-1898.He tells the story as onewould tell a family story. He has a knowledge of the Buffalo Soldiers thathas not been seen since Bill Lecke. The narrative is mostinteresting. His style is extremely readable. The reader finds himselfsaying "just one more page before I put it down."Thisbook is a must read for a student of the Buffalo Soldiers of militaryhistory of the period. The causal reader will find this work packed fullof knowledge and very readable.Dr Schubert has done another bang-up job

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in the Old West.
This is an extremely moving and thought-provoking book. For modern Americans, living in our more cynical age, it seems impossible to believe and a hopelessly naive thing that former slaves and long-oppressed menwould have volunteered to fight for this nation--but they did, in largenumbers (enough to field four all-black Regular Army regiments) and withremarkable heroism .Dr. Schubert captures the spirit of the BuffaloSoldiers' incredible bravery and the harshness of their lives--anddeaths--in a remarkable manner. Although it is a "must-read" foranyone interested in the Old West and the lives of soldiers on thefrontier, this book is also a must-read for anyone interested inAfrican-American history, general U.S. history or anyone who loves a taleof adventure and character: it encompasses some incredible (and verywell-told ) tales of suffering and bravery in a manner that will move thereader alternatively to anger, to tears, to pride and to amazement. One canalso read this book as a cautionary tale on the wages of heroism: many ofthe Buffalo Soldiers who won the Medal of Honor had lives afterwards thatcould only be called tragic in the extreme.Although our nation hasfinally begun to awake to the sacrifices of these men over a century ago,in their own time, they were often the "forgotten soldiers." Dr.Schubert's book, however, now helps to give the Buffalo Soldiers the creditthey have long been overdue. It is a marvelous book.

Product Description

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, African American men were seldom permitted to join the United States armed forces. There had been times in early U.S. history when black and white men fought alongside one another; it was not uncommon for integrated units to take to battle in the Revolutionary War. But by the War of 1812, the United States had come to maintain what one writer called “a whitewashed army.” Yet despite that opposition, during the early 1800s, militia units made up of free black soldiers came together to aid the official military troops in combat.
Many black Americans continued to serve in times of military need. Nearly 180,000 African Americans served in units of the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War, and others, from states such as Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Missouri, and Kansas, participated in state militias organized to protect local populations from threats of Confederate invasion. As such, the Civil War was a turning point in the acceptance of black soldiers for national defense. By 1900, twenty-two states and the District of Columbia had accepted black men into some form of military service, usually as state militiamen—brothers to the “buffalo soldiers” of the regular army regiments, but American military men regardless.
Little has been published about them, but Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers: Perspectives on the African American Militia and Volunteers, 1865–1919, offers insights into the varied experiences of black militia units in the post–Civil War period. The book includes eleven articles that focus either on “Black Participation in the Militia” or “Black Volunteer Units in the War with Spain.” The articles, collected and introduced by author and scholar Bruce A. Glasrud, provide an overview of the history of early black citizen-soldiers and offer criticism from prominent academics interested in that experience.
Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers discusses a previously little-known aspect of the black military experience in U.S. history, while deliberating on the discrimination these men faced both within and outside the military. Chosen on the bases of scholarship, balance, and readability, these articles provide a rare composite picture of the black military man’s life during this period. Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers offers both a valuable introductory text for students of military studies and a solid source of material for African American historians.

Product Description
Our Journey with the Buffalo Soldiers is a compilation of historical research, travel adventures, family histories, and personal stories. African American military units were established in 1866 and these soldiers had much to prove. They earned the name "Buffalo Soldiers" from Indians who held their fighting spirit in high regard. Over the years, they served in all of the military conflicts - the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. Stories of racial prejudice are peppered throughout their history. During World War II, the Army mechanized their equipment and these units were disbanded. This journey focuses on the stories of World War II soldiers but a historical perspective is provided to lay the foundation for these stories.Information about Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the first African American graduate from the West Point Military Academy and other historical military figures are included. Each story is situated by its location and is part of the "journey."The stories about the World War II soldiers are personal and touching. Some described how they were afraid of horses but learned to ride, clean and feed them. There are more stories about traveling by train across the US, living on a ship going across the Atlantic Ocean, experiencing a accident in a jeep during the European Theater, leaving the Army and joining the Air Force, and life events after World War II.Many men returned "home" and took advantage of the GI Bill or settled into stable government jobs. Photographs and interviews with Buffalo Soldiers who attended the reunions of the Buffalo Soldiers every July add a special touch.City by city and fort by fort - personal stories are connected to each location. From Thomasville, GA to Portland, OR the Buffalo Soldiers have many stories to share. On April 8, 2004 George Hicks III wrote - I get excited when I read stories about African American men who served in the U. S. Army as infantryman and cavalryman. These soldiers - Buffalo Soldiers - were my ancestors. I grew up in the 1950s-1960s, watching westerns movies, and I never saw black men riding horses nor as soldiers in the all-white U. S. cavalry regiments. Not until the 1980s when the stories of black soldiers were covered in the media did I revisit my childhood and ask questions. The Buffalo Soldiers were mistreated, issued inferior clothing and equipment, and received less compensation for their effort. They were assigned to military posts far from their families and the townspeople because the same people that they were to protect did not like the color of their skin. They endured the storms and I am so very proud of my black brothers.I have visited places where they served - Washington DC, California, Virginia, Arizona, Mexico, Washington, Oregon, and Kansas and lived in their hometowns.I interviewed troopers who served in the 9th, 10th, 27th, and 28th (Horse) Cavalry regiments. The landscape where they served even today looks rough, hot, and uncomfortable. If they could do what they did under those conditions servicing this country.Surely I can sit in the comforts of my home and write about what I discovered about my ancestors.I decided to tell what I am learning about these men and women. Yes, there was at least one documented female Buffalo Soldier - Cathy Williams. It feels good to write positive stories about us. Perhaps there are other positive stories that need to be written. If you discover a subject that inspires you, sit down and start writing for future generations. It is our history. When you know your past, you can better understand your present and prepare for the future. On June 22, 2004, Carmon Weaver Hicks wrote - George led most of the journey. When you read a section that starts with the pronoun "I," the "I" is George. For many sections, the pronoun is "we."We learned so much, worked so hard, and feel so good about our efforts. This journey has been George's mission but you know the ... Product Description
This is an American story told by a black school-teacher-turned-soldier one generation out of slavery.

What really happened at the charge on San Juan Hill? Teddy Roosevelt never claimed that his Rough Riders captured that hill.

How did some ex-slaves in America manage to prosper after Reconstruction failed?

The answers given by the hero of this book might amaze you.

The story of Pasco Conly begins in a community of ex-slaves living in virtual paradise until the peace is shattered by a vicious murder. The story then follows Conly as he travels to Cuba and back in search of the murderer. He abandons his occupation; he abandons home; he abandons love.

This fictional yet accurate foray into the American condition as the Nineteenth Century comes to an end gives an excellent first-person description of the Spanish-American War—better known as the Battle on San Juan Hill—and it describes the volatile mood of the country during that “excellent little war.” The story challenges what has been said about the Rough Riders and their famous charge. Our hero takes you into the heat of that battle, so much so that you will know he was there. You will cheer our hero on as he is transformed from a gentle school teacher into a fearsome Buffalo Soldier.

The story also heralds the struggles of a town made up of none but blacks and shows the passion they had to govern themselves as well as if not better than communities elsewhere in turn-of-the-century America.

Topping it all is a love story so passionate and so real that you might just fall in love.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Easy To Read Story
This is a good basic read.I would recommend it.

Again as I have stated with similar books on the Buffalo Soldiers, these are the men who opened the West for white settlers by assisting the US government in annihilating (killing) the natives or forcing them on reservations. These men suffered much and never got the recognition they deserved during their life times. They were hated by the very folks who benefited from the nearly wholesale slaughter of men, women and children. It is bittersweet.

The injustice of it all simply saddens me.Lawd I need something fun and lite to read. This serious stuff is sure enough bringing me down. There is joy in being ignorant.Oh if only I was among the masses of the ignorant and oblivious, life would more joyous.Awww it's too late for me my fellow reader.I am hooked!

The following are the words of General T. William Sherman regarding the native populations, i.e. Kiowas, Comanches, and Cheyennes:

"The more we can kill this year, the less will have to be killed the next war," he said shortly after coming to the West, "for the more I see of these Indians the more convinced I am that they all have to be killed or maintained as a species of paupers."

Please keep in mind that the same time the Buffalo Soldiers were primary ones being used to killed and subdue the native populations, while their own people were being hunted and killed and terrorized by the white folks all across the south.

This caught my attention and I though I'd share it with y'all:

"The Buffalo Soldiers had scouted almost ten thousands miles over incredibly roughterrain and had endured some of the harshest weather conditions in the United States.

They had found and marked almost every source of water on the Staked Plains.

Most of the scouting was through country had never been seen before by soldiers of the United States Army.

The Buffalo Soldiers, for better or worse, had helped make it possible. But official reports never even mentioned them."

3-0 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Heroes: The Story of the Buffalo Soldiers
The Forgotten Heroes: The Story of the Buffalo Soldiers is about black calvarymen who went to fight the Native Americans out West in the late 1800's, and to make it safe for settlers. They fought battles against Native Americans led by Geronimo and other famous Native Americans. By joining the army, the soldiers hoped to find freedom, but to make the land safe for settlers, they had to take the Native American's freedom away.
