4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is a great read. Lots of helpful information. The seller also did a good job. I never had any issues during the transaction

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book
I will use this book as the go to information source in making my business grow. Love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.
This book gives you a lot of great information that a lawn care operator would not think about when starting up a business. It takes a lot more than a push mower and a trimmer to make money in this business and this book lets you know what a professional in this occupation does. This is not a book that tells you how to cut grass, fertilize, ect.It deals with what it takes to run a lawn care business and it has a pricing list, checklists, etc. that helps you calculate your start up costs.Good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars LESS THAN I EXPECTED
THE BOOK WAS VERY SHORT AND DID NOT EXPAND VERY MUCH IN A LOT OF IMPORTANT AREA'S...THIS COULD OF ALMOST BEEN A START UP BOOK FOR ANY TYPE OF SMALL SERVICE BUSINESS.I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE FACT THAT SEVERAL OF THE ORGANIZATIONS LISTED WERE EITHER NO LONGER FUNCTIONING OR NEVER DID.THE CONTACT NUMBERS AND WEB ADDRESSES ARE ALL DEAD ENDS.THE BOOK DID HOWEVER HAVE GOOD POINTS ON OUTLINING THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS (HOWEVER GEARED FOR SOMEONE WITH A LOT OF MONEY TO START).I ALSO THINK THE BOOK BARELY TOUCHED UPON THE AREA'S OF HOW TO ATTAIN LICENSE'S AND PERMIT'S.OVERALL I WAS DISAPPOINTED BUT IT WAS NOT A TOTAL LOSS, I LEARNED A FEW THINGS THAT I WILL PROBABLY USE IN THE START UP OF MY BUSINESS. ... Does a good job a segmenting the book to highlight and expand upon areas of particular interest. For example, he has separate sections for professionals such as attorneys (the author is one), brokers, and accountants that are new to buying and selling a business. He has a separate section on basic financials for people new to business concepts. For some of my less experienced clients, this would be helpful.I liked the overall summary per chapter and key questions to consider.

I have worked in small business development for over 18 years, and for allthe knowledge one can attain in that period of time there is always aquestion that requires research. In addition to consulting my businessplanning clients, I also write "small business expert" columns onthe Internet. In neither case can you afford to make a mistake advising aclient or a reader. Every question requiring research on fact and procedurefinds me pulling this book off the shelf before any other. Always, I findmy answer in this book in a manner that allows me to respond. 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for infopreneurs who want to sell distance learning programs.

[Below is the review I wrote and posted for "Start Your Own Online Education Business" © 2007 (ISBN: 1599181207). That book is the same book as "Start Your Own eLearning Business" © 2004 (ISBN: 1932531238).]

I loved this book. I really liked it a lot! I'm in the process of putting together a virtual business that will provide a distance learning programs, some publications, and a coaching service. Having this book to read was wonderful because it discusses the ins and outs of putting together an online education business that is what distance learning programs are.

There are a number of books available today regarding infopreneurship and being an infopreneur. Creating articles, booklets, books, and reducing them to PDF files is the simplest way to be an infopreneur. But putting together teaching programs and providing the PDF files coupled with back and forth interaction through email and/or telephone is a bit more involved. It's still infopreneurship, but it is also distance learning or an online education business. This book explains what online education is about. And it gives you lots of resources and things to think about if you decide to take the plunge and start your own online education business. It has 14 chapters and two lists of resources in its appendix:

    1. Learning for a Better Life
    2. Entering the Online Learning Market
    3. Start-up strategies
    4. Online education goes to school
    5. Tuning up knowledge workers
    6. Lifelong online learning
    7. Course planning and offerings
    8. Solid foundations for virtual firms
    9. Putting your money down
    10. Content and delivery
    11. It's all about the software
    12. Finding the financing
    13. Spreading the word
    14. Failure and success
    A1. Online education resources
    A2. Glossary

I was disappointed with Chapter 8 that discussed Choice of Entity (COE) issues and Business Plans. The COE material was VERY poor, and even wrong at times. LLCs don't dissolve just because an owner dies. The author simply did not know what he was talking about. Consider getting a copy of "Structuring Your Business" (ISBN: 1593371772) to get good information about COE. I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too. I think there should have been a full chapter devoted to business plans in this book. But there wasn't. Consider getting a copy of "Business Models Made Easy" (ISBN: 1599180413). I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too.

If you are wanting to build and run an online education business like me, then definitely get a copy of "Four Steps to Building a Profitable Coaching Practice" (ISBN: 0595296602). I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too. Three other book s I highly recommend you read to supplement Mr. Mintzer's book are: "Mastering Online Marketing" (ISBN: 1599181517), "Web Business Success" (ISBN: 0974924504), and "The Web Savvy Writer" (ISBN: 0977830403). This last book is not currently being sold on Amazon. Google "websavvywriter" to find the author's site and you can buy it from her directly.

What I liked the most about this book was the number and quality of URLs provided of real life distance learning Web sites. They can be found in the body of the book and in the appendix (A1). The Glossary was a disappointment. Also, I found the expenses listed in starting and running an online education business to be high. In fact, very high! If you do the research necessary to write a sound 25-35 page business plan, then you will realize how off the mark the expenses listed in this book really are. It is possible to start such a business for next to nothing except for your time in creating your business plan and your product(s). 5 stars! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for...
If you are a rookie to lawn care looking for a book that will help you get started, this one will help you considerably, but it is not for the experienced landscaper.I was really looking for a book to help me out in bidding for larger scale contracts and this book had little if any info on that.Bidding is your best friend in landscaping so I am always looking for new and different bidding techniques. This book was just barely OK to me, but it did have some good information on advertising. In my opinion, go with door hangers, they work pretty well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of the business end
The landscaping business aspects are definitely here, the accounting, the equipment, the scheduling, even the make and model of truck to buy to pull your trailer full of equipment. I was expecting to learn something about the finer points of lawn care, mixing plants, use of mulch, how to protect plants from being eaten by animals etc. Knowing how to run a tight business is helpful but the main thing that your customer wants from you is quality work and knowledge of grasses and decorative plants. The book states internally that the concentration is on business and not horticulture but it's not obvious until you buy it and read it. Now you get to buy another book to gain the landscaping knowledge. Overall, worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for persons wanting to start a travel/tour business
This book is a very good place to begin researching this field. The author(s)don't cover it "all", however, its an excellent overview of the independent travel agent option as well as the independent tour operator choice. Once you've completed this informative book you should know if you are suited for these types of travel career, which route is the better personal fit and would meet your work needs, and what aspects of travel agent/tour operator you want to research in greater detail. Unlike the comments of at least one previous reviewer, I can assure you that it doesn't take "millions" to start either type of business. Start-up costs can be quite modest for someone who is willing to start small and grow. I know of a couple in my state who started a small adventure tour company marketed to families and after only 3 years are able to support their own family on the income. I was pleased with what I learned from this book and confident in my recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tour Know How
Once I received my copy of Start Your Own Specialty Travel and Tour Business, I immediately began reading it. I only put the book down to do my chores and sleep. I read the book from cover to cover. I was able to open my tour business just from the guidance I received from what I had read. I feel confident my business will be a success.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I think this is a helpful book for someone who already has some experience in the field of travel. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who thinks they want to go into travel because it's a glamourous and exciting career - travel is a business like any other. But, this book is good as a general outline of what needs to be done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic for anyone with less than $1 Million Start Up
Not for the entrepreneur or small business owner. What this book tries to do is make it seem possible to start up a tour business without much capital. It glosses over crucial parts in starting a business, especially financing.Misleading and not up to par with what you would expect from a Small Business magazine.

    Product Description
The magazine business is an entirely unique industry.Itmight even be said that every magazine is, in fact, its ownbusiness—what works for Playboy is very different than what worksfor Vogue. The key is in knowing how the business works, and thenadapting to fit your idea. James Kobak has the know-how to teach youjust that, with over fifty years of experience and several successfulstartups under his belt. He has written this book to help a newgeneration of magazine publishers avoid reinventing the wheel, and tolet them learn from someone else’s missteps and heartaches instead oftheir own.

The book starts with the basics: why there is a constant need for new magazines, what makes for a successful magazine, and the life cycle that all magazines go through. Then it plots out, step by step, what is involved in starting a magazine: how to test the concept for a new magazine, produce a pilot issue, develop a business plan, assemble a staff, raise money, and more.Next the book helps you develop an organizational plan: who’s in charge of what, how the various departments get their jobs done, and how they interact with each other. Finally, Kobak covers how a magazine’s strong brand can be used to expand into other areas, such as database marketing, book publishing, and the Internet.

Peppered throughout with immutable laws of magazine publishing, real-life examples, helpful charts, and 168 things you must do, the book concludes with appendices on the history of the business, sources of information, major suppliers and consultants, a glossary of terms, and other necessary facts and information about this growing industry. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars When was this written?
I was fortunate enough to find this book in a public library. If I'd spent the full $19.95 cover price on it, I would have been disappointed.

It took about an hour and a half to read the book from cover to cover, skimming over the overly redundant parts.Throughout this time, I kept referring to the front of the book to re-verify what the copyright date was.1996?Seems more like 1976. The author focuses almost entirely on retail merchandise stores advertising in the newspaper, and all of the examples shown in the book look like they are from the 1970's.

Certainly not the best reference source. I rate it as two stars rather than one because if you are truly starting out and know absolutely nothing about advertising, it can be a starting point for you.Aside from some very minor grammar and spelling errors in the book, the author's style of writing is interesting and easy to read.

If you can find it at your local library, find it cheap at a garage sale, or borrow it from a friend, it won't hurt you to give it a look, but don't pay full price for it, you'll regret it.

The front of the book lists 11 publications in the "Entrepreneur Magazine small business series" of books.I have not tried any of those other books, but the poor content of this book makes me less inclined to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, easy to read, useful and practical ideas.
Berke writes from practical experience. He takes out all the glib and cute remarks you often find in advertising books.Eliminates most hard to understand jargon too. 4-0 out of 5 stars Needs more variety
I read this book thinking it might help me with my small business, [...]. There is a lot of great, easy to read advice and guidance in it, but I was dissappointed that the whole book cites the same 10 or 12 sucessful women over and over. Having a variety of different voices and input would have made it more interesting, and allowed more successful women to share their ideas, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've bought it twice!
I first bought this book as I considered opening a vintage goods shop with my mother. It was such a good resource, we each wanted our own copy. I found the information to be very useful as we mapped out our business plan and eventually opened our little shop.
The shop eventually closed when we had to give up our location, and cancer claimed Mom's life. I have been feeling the urge to have a shop again lately, and wanted to re-read the book. Apparently I've lent it to someone who never returned it to me! Mom's copy was nowhere to be found either, so I ordered another copy. A small price to pay for the information and guidance imparted within.

Written by the editors of Victoria Magazine who collaborated with successful women such as author, shop owner, retired Air Force Officer and Veteran Debby DuBay this book is a must.I have tried getting in contact with Victoria Magazine to no avail, but a few of the women they highlighted are still available to mentor women like myself.I am a professional woman who wanted to turn a passion into a career and Ms DuBay has been my mentor. Thanks to this book I was able to contact her.Highly recommend this book.
